Street-racing franchise leaves snowy horror without a home.

An April date made no sense for this anyway. Hopefully it will get moved up to fall or winter when it's actually cold out
post #3 of 32
The original came out in June.

Dunno about anyone else, but I'd rather see a chilly arctic movie when it's hot out than when it's cold out.

In the winter the days are cold and short, and the fears of a movie like THING would feel a bit more immediate (being snowed in with a menacing presence) than they would when you can exit the theater and hit the pool

Just my take
Understood. But in the winter I like to watch stuff like Do the Right Thing. It's just personally annoying to go from a cold-weather movie out into cold weather.

On topic, I'm not sure it matters when they release this. A sequel to a 28-year-old film with none of the original stars? Barring Star Wars, has any such belated sequel (we're discounting remakes, obviously) done anything at the box office? Even Tron Legacy has Bridges and the other dude.

Then again, I may be underestimating the original flick's cult power. Then again again, the consensus among fans of the original is "Fuck this prequel shit."

Ironically, in my review of the original I said a prequel might be an interesting idea. Then they actually announced it, and I started hearing things like Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in it. Liked her in Scott Pilgrim, but don't necessarily need her in a Thing movie.

Whether I see this or not I want to know what's up with this film just being called The Thing. It's like they're afraid to call it a prequel, or maybe sneak attacking us with a remake . It's weird to me.

Still think they should have done a large scale Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style sequel in an urban or provincial setting. It'd be more interesting to me.
I just hope they move it to a date that suggests confidence in the film.

Personally one of the best movie watching experiences ever for me has been watching The Thing on blu ray while a blizzard rages outside. Now it's not essential to enjoy the film, but it makes things feel pretty apt.

Well as a chief member of the Joel Edgerton cheer squad I have to say 'boooooooo'. Hope this gets a release date again soon.

...and The Thing? They're going with calling it The Thing? Really? Ugh.

Yes, and that is why a film like Jaws works better in the summer months for me.

I'm with you and seasonal viewings matching up to, well, their respective seasons.

Sometimes I break the trend, but not very often.

In fact, I look forward to the first snow of each year. Especially when I am snowbound. It is then that I throw The Thing on......or The Shining...or....

Well, you get the (snow) drift.....

Yeah. While I'll definitely see it, not prequel angle is not my first choice.

Boy, my stomach virus must be messing with my head, but I always thought that the prequel was going a made for tv movie. So this is a theatrical release? Man, where have I been.

X-Files 2 kinda sucked, but releasing that little snow thriller in JULY didn't exactly make things better.

Frank Darabont was heading up a sequel mini-series called The Return of the Thing for the Sci-Fi Channel back in the early 00's. There was a script review for it a while back.

I love the original and like everyone I'm worried about this sequel. The same thing happened to me with Indy 4 - and now I can't get the taint of the last sequel out of my brain while trying to enjoy the originals. This is happening so much with all these unneccessary re-hashes. I know the answer is "just don't watch the new movies" but that's hard to do as a film fan.

It's like hearing your parents having sex - it's burned into your consciousness for eternity no matter how bad you want it to be forgotten!

Does any body have the script for that Darabont produced Thing sequel? It sounds AWESOME.

That's just sad.

Oh and second the question about whether anyone has that Darabont sequel series script.

I just want to read the 'egg-frying' sequence...

No, it's fucking easy. You just never see them. I'm as hardcore a film fan as you're likely to find. And I've never seen Alien 3, Alien: Ressurection, either of those dumb-ass Alien Vs Predator movies, Terminator 3, Terminator McG, that Wolverine prequel, Indiana Jones and his Stupid Skull, or just about any other sequel to films I love when it's just obvious that it's nothing but a cash-grab that will anger me. You know why? BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT BULLSHIT.

And I won't have time for this Thing thingie. Why do you have the time?

I wish I had Doc Phibes' willpower. I know I'll see this turkey whenever it comes out.
Those of you cheering for a summer release (and yes, I understand the appeal of reverse-season movie settings), do you know/remember that the original bombed at the BO - not just financially, but critically? It had the unfortunate luck to go against ET, and a friendly/family-friendly alien (by the Beard) killed it deader than a flamethrower using jet fuel.

This is a fall/winter release, or maybe early spring.

And like Bradito, I wish I had Phibes' self-discipline. Because I know I'm going to see this at some point.

I don't know what you guys are drinking but a sequel to The Thing sounds terrible no matter how you cut it. I never want to know what happens after we leave MacCready and Childs to freeze to death, not knowing definitively if either was a thing or if they managed to stop it.
I dunno. That mini series that never got made sounds pretty neat.
A sequel doesn't have to answer that question, there are ways around it, not that I care either way.
I'm with Phibes in that I have no problem not seeing something if I suspect it will be bullshit; there isn't a film or series of films that I'm not prepared to ignore if it looks like nonsense. Life is too short and my pockets too shallow.
Yeah seriously, it's only the fact that I'm an Edgerton fan that I'll even be seeing this. The Thing geek that I am is outraged this film even exists in the first place.
Ok, but wait...this is still a prequel. Right?

The best movie endings piss you off for a few minutes before you realize that they gave you the best possible ending available (Inception, Before Sunset, Fresh, About Schmidt...). I like to pretend that Childs says, " Actually, MacReady... I've got these here glasses that, if I put them on... will show me who the alien is... but I ain't puttin' them on without a fight."

Ha!

Alternate prequel title considered:
THAT THE THING YOU DO!

I think I just found my new Chud hero. Maybe I should stay away.

I can watch the sequels and separate them from the others/original. The only thing cannon is in my mind.

For example, I like certain aspects of the Halloween sequels but, in my mind, the story really ended when
Michael Myer's body was missing at the end of the original
.

I lose no enjoyment from disappointing sequels being associated with their originals. I usually enjoy them on some level, their level, even if they don't measure up to the initial inspiration.

Is nobody cheered by the fact that Ron Moore wrote this?
Ron Moore wrote this like David Mamet wrote Hannibal.
