Inglourious Basterds

Very late to the party on this film but I flat out loved it. From the opening (very chilling) scene with Lada in the farm house to the total change of pace once Pitt and co arrive on screen the film is perfect.

What this film does very well is set up the fact that this is not a traditional war movie, which helps make the ending enjoyable rather than a "They can't do that" moment.

Each character in this film is fleshed out in some very nice scenes, apart from the afore mentioned opening I think my favourite is the German bar scene with Hicox and the SS officer. I knew Taratino was a master of dialogue but this scene cemented in my mind that he has the ability to build tension and have you on the edge of your seat without any action.

Still not overly sold on Eli Roth but he plays his part well and even Mike Myers was watchable, which just goes to prove QT can get the best out of anyone.

All in all a great movie and one I will revisit again and again.

You know there's a GIANT thread about this already, right? http://www.chud.com/forum/showthread.php?t=118046

Yeah but I figured it was way past the post release stage by now.

Ah, understandable. But with all the pages of posts, I'd think you might have luck getting someone to join your discussion if you hit something that more people are subscribed to.

As for the film, I saw it in the theater and really enjoyed it and I have the Blu-ray here at home but I haven't gotten around to watching it again yet. So unfortunately I can't really offer any fresh discussion on it.

Just rewatching this on tv, and just past the intro. Anyone notice the framing of Shosanna as she runs from the house recalls The Searchers? Is Hans Landa a twisted John Wayne searching the last living member of the Dreyfus family?

Would this make the Basterds the Indians?  Especially with Aldo Apache?

.....Probably late to the party. Ah well.

Tarantino doesn't seem to be able to pass up a chance to reference that shot.  He used it in Kill Bill as well.

I didn't fall in love with this film as much as everyone else but that's probably my favourite scene of the 2000s. Everything about it is outstanding.

The opening is a fantastic little short film, but the highlight of the film is hands down the bar scene.  That's high on my list of best scenes of any century.

Absolutely. The film is filled with scenes that are studies in creating tension but the bar scene is my favourite if only because unlike the other one-on-ones, there are so many things happening and the danger is constantly being escalated.

I'm not as big a fan of the film as a whole as some people are, but I will readily admit that there are scenes in this that are as well written, acted and directed as virtually anything from the past 10 years. In particular I'd cite the opening, and the bar scene. Even though some of the connective material for me proved vexatious, I got a giddy high from the masterfully handled suspense present in those sequences. The thrill of great writing and dialog will always beat out any 200 million dollar special effect, as far as I'm concerned

BTW: Something that occurred to me the other day: Why is it that two of the coolest scenes from Fassbender's career both involve him under cover as a german, in a bar, talking to nazis, and both scenes conclude with a stabbing and a shooting only after the men sitting at the table have all had a drink? It's really quite odd when you think about it! (X-Men FIRST CLASS being the source of the other scene)

PS Just out of curiosity, I was under the impression that a "Post Release" thread, if one existed, would serve as home base for film discussion for a given title in perpetuity? If I want to discuss, say, CHILDREN OF MEN, am I to abandon the complex discussion that has already taken place and just throw up a new post to give a shout out to the film? I'd love some guidance just so I don't step on any toes

That was the other one I liked a lot but I felt the construction of it more than I did for the farm scene. I saw a little too much of the strings being pulled to be fully dragged in. I watched it admiring QT's selection and manipulation of the elements of it rather than just believing in the world woven by those elements like I did with LaPadite's farm. Can't go wrong with Michael Fassbender though.
