This is one of those good 'in between' films, says Nick.

First one that I really disagree on calling it "good." It's not. It tries to be, there's good qualities about it, but let's be honest: Pride and Glory coming out a year later is not what made it seem so generic and familiar, all the routine and generic plot points made is what accomplished that task. The marketing wasn't great, but they sold it for what it was-- a middle of the road family crime drama/police procedural. And that's what it is. Released in October or March, it's still a small potatoes release.

I gave this a re-watch last year to see if my distaste for the meandering pace and thematic confusion held up, and yeah, it's a frustrating mix of decent to good performances hindered by a script that tries to juggle too many ideas and ends up catching none of them.

Do agree about the car chase through the rain. That segment carried a tension the rest of the film sorely lacked.

"Lack of tension" is great shorthand for the movie's problem. And I agree: it is very generic, despite the star power involved. Worse than generic - because sometimes formula can be fun - it's just boring. Uninvolving; no passion, no energy. I thought STREET KINGS was better than this, and STREET KINGS wasn't very good.
