WHAT I'M THANKFUL FOR 11.16.10

Hey Elizabeth, how did you like the depiction of Jonah Hex in "Batman: The Animated Series"? I don't read comics, so that's the only place I'm familiar with him from, and I really enjoyed the episode that featured him. The character was very well played and written in it, and that alone made me curious about the movie until all the bad reviews came out.

It helps that the episode was written by Joe R. Lansdale, who I think has a wonderfully clever and unique writing style and a delightful way with dialog based on his "Bubba Ho-Tep" and the terrific job he did on two other "Batman: The Animated Series" episodes. I think his episodes "Perchance to Dream" and "Read My Lips" deserve to be considered top five highlights of that series (the latter being my personal second favourite). I don't think the people behind that show could have found a better person to write Jonah Hex into it.

I really enjoyed Palmiotti and Gray's Power Girl. You think I'd like Jonah Hex based on that?

I'm not sure I've seen the whole episode -- I saw only where he captured Batman for the gladiator ring, and I thought it was hilarious and spot on.

Jonah Hex also made a nice appearance in JLA, and had a really nice nod to what bizarre time traveling mythology he has. I don't remember what all Hex did in that episode, but it was funny.

Joe Lansdale wrote a bunch of Jonah Hex stories -- they're definitely weirder and creepier than the current run, but they're a lot of fun. You should check them out. The movie seemed to borrow a lot from his run, and yet abandoned the plot in favor of random scenes of nonsense.

Oh yeah, I think so. It's a lot more violent, obviously. It's been described by people smarter than me as grindhouse horror western, and it really is. Lots of blood and creepiness. But the same offbeat humor and raunch from Power Girl is there.

I have mad love for Joe Lansdale, and like Two Gun Mojo a lot.

I'm glad I can inspire a little conversation even if I write about the same six topics.

We may not be thinking of the same episode. Can you be a little more specific? I don't recall any 'gladiator ring'. I was referring to an episode called "Showdown" in which Jonah Hex and Batman never interact. 85% of the episode is told in flashback by Ra's Al Ghul and it's about how Jonah Hex once foiled his plans to destroy America's railroad in the 1800s.

Apparently the one I'm talking about was called Duel of the Double Crossers. I haven't seen Showdown, but I'll hunt it out on YouTube.
