Thought in my head this morning:
Warner Brothers really wants the DC Comics superheroes to take over for Harry Potter as their new yearly tent pole movies. But one of the big things about Potter is the books and the readers. And frankly, not a lot of kids are reading comics anymore (my son being the exception). My wife took a bunch of comics to her 4th grade class, and most of the kids had never seen or read a comic book before.
I think Warner Brothers and DC Comics need to start trying to get books in front of as many eyes as possible. I would start by trying to get comic racks back into grocery stores and gas stations. A hard push to get beyond the local comic shop (and this is nothing against any LCS - I love mine) and the book store, and get comics into places where they become an impulse buy by kids and their parents. Wouldn't be a bad strategy for Marvel and Disney either (and Disney has two sets of comics right now - Marvel and its line from Boom! Studios).
But people don't really have as much an attachment to these characters as they do to Potter, and you don't have the large fan base to encourage others to go see the movies.
Just a thought this morning. Love to know what others think. Helps me to formulate and rethink as well.
