COWBOY & ALIENS TRAILER AMBLES INTO TOWN

New trailer for the Jon Favreau-directed movie.

Hmm. I’ll be the contrarian in the sea of praise that’s sure to appear, but I’m not sold on this yet. Tonally, the film still hasn’t quite convinced me (it’s certainly a lot bleaker than I expected, considering how ridiculous the concept is), and the action doesn’t look particularly exciting. After the disappointingly brief, very poorly edited and shockingly standard in terms of visual presentation action sequences that dragged down Iron Man 2, I was hoping that this would be a return to form for Favreau, but…meh.
It has me interested. I'm still not convinced that straight-ahead serious was the way to go, but the teaser did its job.
Oh, look...at 1:43, it's Noah Ringer, the lead in the titanically awful Last Airbender.
Now THAT'S what I'm talking about. LOVED it.
Wow you really have an eye for Noah Ringer.

As for the trailer, I don't have any strong feelings about it. Didn't really get me pumped up about the movie, but it doesn't look bad.
nice teaser, I'll see this, the wife loves Daniel Craig and Olivia Wilde aint hard on the eyes. Weird how the appearance of Harrison Ford is a disappointment these days.
My thoughts exactly on Ford. His Southern accent wasn't the best, to say the least.
At least it's something I might not hate Harrison Ford in.
He should have been sporting a fedora and bullwhip. Now that would get me pumped.
And why didn't he say, "What in the Sam Hill?"

Seriously, fuck this movie.
James Bond + Indiana Jones + 13 + The director of Iron Man = My ass in a theater seat. Trailer would have to be god awful to change that equation. It wasn't.
I love Iron Man, but Iron Man 2 seriously tested my Favreau devotion. Still, despite my indifference to Ford these days and the reminders of The Last Airbender that are sure to appear with Noah Ringer starring, the cast is solid. I'll wait until the second trailer is released to form a stronger opinion.
THAT'S the Harrison Ford I love. Holy shit, so fucking there.
Am I misremembering, or is this kind of early for the start of next summer's trailers? I guess Harry Potter brings them out. Still, I'm used to getting a show nothing teaser first.

Surprising tone. Not amazing, but if it had come out last summer it would have looked better than almost everything.
It needs more whiskey swilling but I like it so far. A lot more gritty and hard than I would have expected.
Loved it for what it was. A teaser. Showing us a mysterious stranger and some Old Timey Cowboys before introducing the Aliens.

TICKETS PREORDERED.
UPDATED with screencaps, if you're into that sort of thing.

I think Harrison looks like a lot of fun.

Here's an avatar-sized cap of his crazy face, if anyone's interested: http://chud.com/articles/content_images/173/CVA_4-1.jpg

As a card carrying member of the grim n' gritty gang, I appreciated the surprisingly non-whimsical, po-faced grim n' gritty approach. Also, I have a huge gay crush on Daniel Craig. I will see this.
Someone puts Keith Carradine in a summer blockbuster western with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford (and Sam Rockwell, in there somewhere) and you cocksuckers have the goddamn TEMERITY to nitpick? You can all go straight to hell. I've never been so turned around on a summer movie season so quickly as the last three days.
I just KNOW Harrison's going to have a badass gunfight. You can smell it in that trailer.

The fact that they're playing this seriously really ramped it up for me. I thought the concept was silly when this was first announced, but this looks fantastic. Seriously excited for this.

Same here. This, GREEN LANTERN, and YOUR HIGHNESS all look terrific (YOUR HIGHNESS is more a spring movie, but eh so what).
Phil, a great cast really doesn't matter much to me because even blockbuster giants such as Harrison Ford aren't infallible. Iron Man 2 had a great cast, and in spite of that I hated the film precisely because it had a great cast. It utterly wasted them. Sorry, but I simply don't share the Favreau love here.
As Draco said, the tone seems to be way darker than expected. This teaser doesn't look too hot - something seems a bit off - but I'm interested.

It's great to see Keith Carradine donning the cowboy hat once again. I loved him in Deadwood.
WEIRD NITPICK: The rim on Craig's hat is too wide for my liking. It makes it harder to get a man-boner for him.
If Trailer 2 or any other upcoming footage features the thrilling action that I think a film like this needs, then I'll be far kinder to this effort from Favreau. However, the action in Trailer 1 just looks...bland. Filmed without the slightest bit of command over visual language and not too groundbreaking to differentiate it from the blockbuster crowd. It's more Iron Man 2 than Iron Man.
It's a teaser. Ergo, it teases.
Maybe I'm more impressed because it was barely on my radar before but I thought it looked both like a lot of fun and something quite unusual for a blockbuster attempt. Also nice to see Ford doing his grumpy old man thing and having it actually fit quite comfortably. Gives me hope that his career might still have a few miles left in it.
Okay, that was way better than I ever could have expected. I am so down with this one.

It's nearly 2 minutes and thirty seconds. It shows enough of the action to give an early impression.

Looks pretty standard to me. I'm more interested in Tron for my pure action and True Grit for my Western fix.

Hey, tell us how you feel about IRON MAN 2. We're all on the edge of our seats.

What is this? Interesting Trailer day?

No need for the sarcasm there. I think I've made my thoughts on Iron Man 2 clear enough. After how impressed I was with Iron Man, I was disappointed by how staggeringly sloppy the action in its sequel was. Cowboys and Aliens, with its disappointingly standard presentation, doesn't strike me as a serious return to form, but we shall see.

Favreau, Schmavreau, I knew little-to-nothing before seeing the trailer and what I just saw kicked my butt.

Dunno about the "dark tone", but it's motherfuckin' spaceships attacking the Old West. Seems to me playing it straight would be the way to go; it's ridiculous from frame one. I don't need everything to play like My Name Is Bruce.

Yeah, between this and the fucking whinnying going on about the Green Lantern trailer, the abject joylessness around here is kind of depressing. This looks fucking great. Ford looks solid, the tone and atmosphere give me a lot of hope, and to the dude who thinks the premise is ridiculous - if you can buy aliens arriving in a present-day context, where's the gigantic leap? Why is it implausible for aliens to invade the Old West? The Roman Empire? Charles Dicken's lap?

I'm glad you're thrilled about this. Many people are.

Not trying to dissuade you from liking it. Just expressing how disappointed I am by this trailer.

Ford looks decent. His Southern accent needs a lot of work. Not entirely surprising.

The atmosphere seems OK, but I stand by what I said: the tone seems undecided. Considering that the writers of the script are also known for Transformers and Star Trek, I'm expecting a shaky, undecided atmosphere that can't settle on what it wants to do.

I don't know why I think the premise is ridiculous, but an alien invasion in the Old West seems hokey to me. *shrug*

People are entitled to their opinion. I'm just as annoyed by rabid fanboyism.

HOORAY!
You know, in my younger years, I might be baited into an argument over a 2 and a half minute teaser and how from those 2 and a half minutes you can extrapolate an entire movie. Just like you can take my drive to and from work every day and know everything about my 41-year life.

Or, I can just know your opinion doesn't synch up with mine, and move on with my life. Guess which one I'm picking.

Oddly enough, this is exactly where Dicken's intended to take the plot of The Mystery of Edwin Drood before he died.
I could have used this "Yeah...." shot in the trailer.

I wonder how much different this would have been with Downey Jr. in the Craig role.

He was truly ahead of his time.

And Draco, I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you weren't equating my enjoyment of a couple of interesting, entertaining trailers with rabid fanboyism. Rabid fanboyism is bleating about how terrible a costume looks, 8 months from release. Rabid fanboyism is delicious and shrill disgust at the colour of Sinestro's head. I'm just looking forward to a couple of genre movies which look like they're at least trying.

Smart move for both of them. People might be close to getting burned out on Downey tentpole movies, and Craig needs to- and was due to - show up at least once every 18 months and beat up four dudes in one scene. Everybody wins.

And yes, Draco - no one knows if this movie sucks. But I think it's a very effective and fun trailer when many are not.
This looks like ridiculous nonsense starring actors I love. So ... I'm confused.
RDJ is the most charming motherfucker on the planet, but when it comes to being a gritty asskicker I think Craig will be just as good if not better. And besides, I'd hate for RDJ and Favreau to end up in some horrible incestuous relationship the way Depp and Burton have.
I kind of dug the hell out of it. Daniel Craig is channeling Steve McQueen again it seems. Looks fun. Wish it was a straight up Western, but I will take what I can get.
Cool trailer. I've never been a big fan of Favreau as a director - I always thought Iron Man really coasted on the charisma of RDJ more than anything else. But this looks like a lot of fun. Its nice to be excited about Harrison Ford being in a movie again.
Kurtzman's description of the movie made me roll my eyes a bit, but seeing it in action is a wholly different thing. A LOT of the tone sold in the teaser comes together for me by the mere presence of Daniel Craig. I'm definitely looking forward to this now in a way that the Green Lantern trailer didn't manage to hit me.

I'm a bit hesitant of Ford. Nothing really against the man, but he kinda stuck out as a celebrity cameo as opposed to an actual character in the movie. But I really hope the movie nails what seems to be a begrudged partnership between him and Craig.

Though the guy can do great work, I wish someone other than Harry Gregson Williams was scoring this. Obviously, I'd rather have his contemporary, John Powell, unleashed on a sci-fi/western. I haven't seen Zathura, but Iron Man and Iron Man 2 really could've benefited from stronger scores.
I kinda wish they picked a better title. "Cowboys and Aliens" is going to garner a lot of eye-rolling from the wife.
At least with the title, people can't complain that they didn't know what they were getting. But yeah, they could have thought of something else. GUNSLINGERS VS. GRAYS? ...yeah, I'll quit now.
It reminds me of a scene in Bolt, where the TV show in the world of the film suddenly introduces aliens to the plot in order to appeal to a certain demographic.

A generic girl & dog spy thriller, then BOOM. The green glow of a tractor beam and the villain growls, "Aliens..."

It's just a title, but I can't deny that it kinda bugs me.

Don't we already have a thread somewhere where we listed movies that had titles that basically explain the premise?

Watched it again and agree all the way. He's channeling McQueen and in a good way... in other words, yummy yummy
