Bill Bowen (Old Will) passed away recently...

For those I may have missed via PM who would know who this is:

Bill passed away from a heart attack a few months ago. He apparently had been working on a documentary, and had gotten it to the "show footage on YouTube" stage before passing away.

Here is how I found out:

Here was the movie he was making:

sorry to hear it. The Old Will moniker rings a bell or two but from long ago.

Crazy. I remember him from the boards, unfortunately only from the controversies he was involved in here (his arguments with Devin, scientology). I remember him talking about a film he was working on a few years back, so I assume the CPS doc was that film.

There were several different film projects, but I believe the one he was working on while posting on the boards was an "improv comedy interview stars on the streets of Hollywood" thing. I remember seeing a cut of it when a bunch of us from CHUD met in Burbank at his house.

I have vague memories of Old Will from some of the older drafts, I think. Shame.

Writing a eulogy on the site. Made the mistake of reading old stuff and doing research. Should have just kept it dumb and sentimental.

Old Will > Paul The Hellboy.

Actually I did something rather special for Paul.

On the main page?
I wasn't really around the front page much when it happened, so I did some other stuff in the real world.

Back to Bill.

And no, not in any stretch of the imagination was Paul's loss less than Bill's. Paul's hit really close to home.

Wow...this is terribly sad news. I do remember him from the boards.

With all possible candour, I barely knew Paul but I can guarantee he was a nicer person than Bill was. Nick is writing about Bill because he was here at the beginning (as were you), and we all have a shared history with Bill that goes outside of the boards and ended badly for almost everyone. Please don't take me posting his passing as me looking to reminisce about the good old days. I have nothing to say about them. I just knew others would be interested so I posted the news.

Well said, Ludwig.

Yeah, I don't recommend shaking that tree. Never heard of this guy so I read some old threads. Jesus. Y'all can keep your "good old days."

Condolences to Bill's family and friends.

I have fond memories of meeting Bill and other Chewers back in the summer of '02. Bill was a generous and gracious host at his home, and was kind enough to drive folks to and from LAX as I recall. Very sorry to hear this.
I don't have any fond memories from his time on the boards (just the opposite, in fact), but it is heartening to hear he worked on some apparently very worthwhile projects.

Will was like a lot of people, he lost his mind a little or a lot because of 9/11. Before that he was mostly a yuckster. For the real world parallel, see also David Zucker.

He once told me I could be 'fixed' through anthropometric measuring. That's a special kind of crazy and I will always remember that.
Wow... this brought up a shitload of old memories from here.
Like Andre, I remember Will being quite decent until he starting imploding. I didn't recall it coinciding with 9/11, but that does fit the time line. I had forgotten about the Devin/Scientology stuff, but I have vivid memories of him stealing Shelby's bandwidth and that chaos that followed. In anycase, its sad when anyone dies, and particular one of our own. RIP Will.

Why don't I remember anything except the Scientology stuff and the 9/11 stuff where he started driving around the country in his RV with all of the American flag stickers to put together his patriotic documentary?

Ah, well. He was definitely old school CHUD.
