Looks just as dumb as the Stallone outfit.

Looks suitably Dredd. I admit to being only a casual fan of the comics as, at least in my experience, they've been hard to come by. I did love the first movie when I was 13, but I now recognize a lot of the trappings that being a Hollywood film brought to it: Stallone's mug, Rob Schneider as sidekick.

Still, nothing in this new movie can top Armand Assante bellowing LAAAAAAAAAAAAAW?! I BETRAYED THE LAW?! Something something brothers and sisters my law yadda yadda...

Karl Urban has proven impressively diverse and yet impenetrably tough when necessary. Well suited. But will he have a voice activated gun?

I'm not going to make any judgements yet because it's not properly lit. Looks very bulky, and Urban definitely has the jaw for Dredd. Can't wait for a proper shot.

Missed opportunity.

This just looks dreadful.

And the chin? Not nearly big enough? Why couldnt Robert Z'Dar or Bruce Campbell be in this role....yahdahahahada

I like this actor, so let's give him a chance.
I won't pass judgment until I get to see what Rob Schneider's new outfit looks like.

This is one of those things that makes me feel like we live in an alternate universe. One where there is not one, but TWO Judge Dredd movies. And a Daredevil film.

I really, really, hate agreeing with you but I'm really surprised that we've got two Judge Dredd films and we're getting a Judge Dredd film which is keeping its lead masked the whole way through. I honestly don't think Dredd has the cultural cache the producers think he does.

Looks too big on his lil head. Like a kid dressed up.

looks good so far, after all it's only a test pic.
I give two shits about the Dredd franchise, but I'd watch anything if it'll put food on Urban's table without him having to resort to working in Jennifer Aniston romcoms.
Versace would be appalled.
They can't leave out the gold shoulderpads can they? The leather jacket here makes him look like one of the gotham city cops from burton's first batman. Not imposing at all.
Nice to make the front page.

Test photo by the way taken during rehearsals.

DARKMITE8, Bobblehead? No!...BobbleDREDD!

I think that Karl Urban was...Perfectly Cast, as Judge Dredd. I do not Dread, that image of him as...DREDD! The only ones full of...DREDD, will be the...Perps of, Mega City One!

Karl Urban fans who do not like his latest film. Better...DREDD, than Red!

My first reaction was that it looked like a guy dressed up at Comicon, but I've softened up a little after seeing the super hi-res shot at aicn and lightened versions.

Still doesn't look as good as the 1995 version of the costume, though. I thought they recreated the comic costume almost perfectly in the Stallone movie.

Fleed, that might be your best work yet. Seriously busted up laughing.

Can't really form an opinion on the costume though. Need to see it in context.
Well I am on a CRT monitor right now with the brightness cranked all the way up and that image is still too dark to make out clearly. As a result, I cannot pass judgement on Urban's outfit at this time

I will say though that from what I can see, his frowny mouth seems to suit the role perfectly

EDIT: Just saw the lightened version in this thread:

It's OK. A bit too cluttered for my tastes and the eyes look odd, like the helmet sticks out too far from his face

Also the colors are a bit odd, but I'm not really familiar with DREDD comics so perhaps that's an uninformed opinion
post #25 of 42
Urban has consistently pleasantly surprised me and it isn't shot on a green-screen. That's enough for me to be confident.
Helmet looks a bit longer and wider than it needs to be, but it's a minor nitpick. Lighting makes no difference there. Looks decent.

Would Dredd allow himself to have 5 o' clock shadow? I haven't read many of the comics.
Nexus-7, I suspect, Judge Joe Dredd will Judge, his Razor...Guilty, of leaving the 5 o clock shadow, and is considering a replacement razor.
In the comic, Dredd has made it clear that stubble or any kind of facial hair on a Judge is unacceptable. The stubble in the pic doesn't bother me, though.
fleed = wadew1 for Judge Dredd. Fleed wins with adherence though.
That lighter picture looks decent. Although I do agree that the costume from the first movie was pitch perfect.
Comparison shot for the kiddies who don't remember the book.

I liked the Stallone DREDD, never read the funny books, and think Urban is kind of shit, but I can't help but be interested in this.
You have a big cod to fill, Urban.
That thing was impressive. I guess it was Versace's version of the gigantic zipper Dredd has in the comics.
Add the eagle and you're good to go. I just don't get the negativity. It certainly is better than fucking spandex and fucking codpieces.
While the embellishments on The Stallone costume are great, I don't get why they decided to stick him in something that looks like a tight cotton sweat suit.

I actually dig Urban's helmet. It'd be perfect if they sized it down just a little. But as it is, it'd look better with some big honkin' golden shoulder pads!
Looks closer to the Mike McMahon outfit than the Brian Bolland one.

I think the very very early versions of Dredd were much lighter in the shoulder pad department.

The Stallone outfit was a little too...fabulous for my tastes. More Disco than Punk. I was more a fan of some of the other Judge outfits in that movie. The wall guards etc.
The Stallone outfit is basically the comic outfit with a codpiece that you never really see in the movie, so I don't get the "too fabulous"/too spandexy complaints. Maybe the paints are too tight, but from the belt up it's basically a military uniform.

Urban on the other hand is wearing a big leather life preserver with Wesley Snipes' vest from BLADE strapped to it?

Ehh....whatever.
I liked the script. The movie should be good if they director can make the many floors of PEACHTREE BLOCK interesting.
The costume looks really good. A nice 'real world' adaptation. And like Nardo said above, the first lot of 2000AD had him as a much slighter man, with smaller shoulder pads. So it's no diversion and certainly looks more practical than Stallone's get up.

Of course, all of it is irrelevant if the script is pigshit and the acting is horrible.

For those uninitiated, the first Judge Dredd strip.

They can just use this guy's helmet...

... and costume.

What kind of weird military do you have in mind?
From the belt up he's wearing something similar to those "dress coats" that Policemen, Marines and other branches of military around the world have to wear at formal events.

always enjoyed Urban as a country singer, can't wait to see his acting chops
