Doctor Who: Season Six - Page 2

Dan: they already nodded to how ludicrously deus-ex-machiny the sonic screwdriver had become under RTD in one of the early episodes of S5. They had the Doctor say something like "From now on I'm only going to use this screwdriver for unscrewing things."

I don't have a problem with the screwdriver being able to access computers and other technology--that's an extension of its function, to allow the Doctor to go places and do things that would otherwise be barred to him (the psychic paper is another side of this)--but when he can point it at anything and magically make it do whatever he needs, it gets ridiculous. Actually I think the real breaking point for me was when he was using the screwdriver to HEAL PEOPLE, which makes no sense at all. How hard would it have been for him to run into the TARDIS and pull out some Time Lord first aid kit?

Restricting the screwdriver to just a couple of functions also allows the writers to load up the Doctor with lots of fun steampunk technology, like the rear-view mirror that lets you see invisible things. The guys got a huge time-travelling Bag of Holding, why not let him take advantage of it?
Yeah, Prankster, the first episode of series 5 had the line, "No TARDIS, no Sonic Screwdriver, two minutes to spare... WHO DA MAN?". Moffatt definitely thumbing his nose to RTD and setting down his ideals straight away.

I really hated how they started using the Screwdriver for anything because it sort of made the Doctor less interesting. Like in Midnight where he just sort of waves his sonic screwdriver at the control panel to figure out what's wrong. You could have gotten the same result from him actually running a diagnostic and it would make him seem less dependant on his toys.
I'm still waiting somewhat optimistically for the return of the old series trend of the Doctor solving problems with other random junk in his pockets (cricket balls, rubber bands, that kind of thing).
That said, the contraption in The Lodger made up for a lot.

Also, they blew up the Sonic Screwdriver and didn't replace it for quite some time in the early 80s because the writers of the time found it dramatically dull if the Doctor could open any lock.
I actually think being able to open any (regular) lock is a dramatically logical ability to give the Doctor, with the caveat that the SS can be stopped by sufficiently advanced technology, like the Pandorica. I mean, given who that was made for, you've got to figure they would have made it sonic-proof.

Also, it doesn't do wood.

I really hope they announce the start date soon. Im getting kinda annoyed they've said nothing.

Heard a rumor they will premiere on/after easter with two eps in two days... hope its true, but would prefer much earlier ... not looking likely though as its second week in march and no firm date yet.

I thought it was pretty firmly established as starting again in April?

Which means, along with Game of Thrones, April's going to be a big TV month for me. And doesn't Breaking Bad return sometime around there as well?

I've searched all sorts of DW sites and the closest official word I could find was "spring" or something... and that was from like december or earlier, i think.

Ehh, just checked again... Looks like i misremembered a bit, as I thought they almost all started in late march, but it seems its been first week of april (and a couple times last few days of march ) since 2005.

But still theres been no official announcement, and as I said, its still listed vaguely as "Spring 2011" everywhere.

I guess with the season split as it is, it makes a bit of sense to push the start back (to make its end closer to the next half season's start), but i'm "jonesing" hard for it (god i hate myself for saying that)....

Guess I'll have to go back and resume the classics ... stuck on hartnell, think last i watched was "gunfighters" with Wyatt Earp, etc... cant wait til we get a new doctor (and some color...) And all the missing ones piss me off, i hate the re-creations, and the way missing eps and narratives suddenly force new actors on you without notice.... i think i noticed the end of hartnell and the beginning of the second doctors tenure are all missing, so that should be extra-awkward....

I’m trying to actively avoid spoilers this year, after pissing off a few people last year, but everything I’ve heard suggests both episodes of the Two Parter airing over Easter Weekend. So that would be the 23rd and 24th April. I’ve also heard that they want to start the second half of the season on 29th October.

That would mean a 4 month gap between a Christmas Carol and the first part of the season, a 4 month gap between the end of the first part and the start of the second part and then a month long gap between the end of the second part and the Christmas special.

I appreciate it Spike, I know i was one of the ones, if not THE one, that gave you a hard time about it (specifically what was inside the pandorica)... sorry about that, I know it comes from a place of passion for the show, and good intentions.. And thanks very much for the new info... the october thing is definitely news to me... a little later than Id like but if sherlock airs in the interim, i think I'll be fine (especially with the obvious plot teasers moffat gave a while back... they chose good ones to re-do, imo)

I do like the notion of only a month or two from the end of season 6 to the christmas special-- Sounds good to me.

This is a bad idea. Has no one learned anything from Battlestar Galactica?

April 23rd, says EW (tread carefully with that link if you're spoiler squeamish, plot details are inside!).  And it'll air the same day in the US on BBC America!!!!!!!!!

Yeah I read that on another site, too ... good news.

To celebrate, I thought I'd share my desktop picture, aptly titled, "Time Can Be Rewritten" (EDIT: Little explanation- Just before this shot, Amy approaches the Doctor and asks what he's thinking about, to which he replies, he's thinking that time can be rewritten... then they cut to this shot):

DoctorWho_TimeCanBeRewritten.jpg

1920x1080, captured by me, from the full bluray (looks great, by the way, much more subtle color palette than the show had when it aired).

For those who'd rather just get the link:

Enjoy!

A (very) brief teaser for the 2 comic relief mini-sodes, hardly spoilerish...

Rory is practically panting in that clip.

Two Amys. How can you not pant?

<Nitpick>

That could easily have gone horribly wrong, because the Doctor who came through the doors and declared "The Wibbley Lever" (?) hadn't actually seen them do it yet. So he could have been incorrect, and they all could have blown up.

I laughed way too hard at The Doctor's panicked "Rory!!!!!!" when Amy asked to talk to him.

And this cemented the nitpick that I have in regard to Gillan's acting: she does these odd little pauses when she talks.  It's like she's constantly running out of air or something,

RE harley's nitpick ... worked alright for shatner's career....

Can easter be now, already?!? What do i have to do to get this pesky international holiday moved up?

I saw another video where they paused and zoomed on that shot of The Doctor, and there is absolutely some sort of alien standing behind him in a suit.  Whatever that thing is, it was featured in the trailer for Series Six that came out a while back.

I remember Moffat describing

a few months back and they seem to match the look of that thing. I absolutely don't know for sure, just conjecture on my part.

It looks like The Gentlemen from the Buffy episode "Hush".

It looks to me like the traditional, area-51-type Grey.

Hhrm, one of the shots seems to be showing a regeneration. But it looks like the old Tardis set. It could be something completely different, it’s on screen for barely a second and the screencap is essentially nothing but GOLDEN LIGHT, but it’d be interesting to have them cross back into the Doctor’s timeline.

"I've killed 100 time lords"

Could be, but it looks more like a big ball of energy as opposed to the "flowing from appendages" thing they've established in the new WHO. Then again, The Master is still out there waiting for a comeback...

It's probably a big old ball of energy. Moffat likes to play with the fandom and that's the sort of shot that will send people wild with mass guessing.

The trailer suggests that the frosty cinematography from The Pandorica Opens/A Christmas Carol is back. Which is good, I loved the look of certain Season 5 episodes. Kind of like a weird mix between the aesthetics of Burton and Cameron.

I'm so happy that my friends got me into this show.  I have the biggest smile on my face right now.

Ohmygod, it looks better than series five.

Hell yes!

Bring it on Moffatt.

Especially since a still of that image appears to show Rory in the bottom right corner of that shot.

love the new ad, but i still think the series 5 preview was better ... i think that preview is truly brilliant.

I'm just glad this going to be playing concurrently on BBC America with the BBC airing.

Speaking of BBC America, a different Series 6 trailer is airing there with new footage.  Someone filmed it on their phone and posted it online until we get a nice HD copy, but what I saw looks great.  One of my favorite aliens appears to be making a return!

I think it looks like more of the same shit from last season which was fucking terrible!

I was NEVER a fan of Who until I saw Blink. I then watched all four seasons of Nu-Who and was blown away by how much I loved it. The spirit and tone reminded me of classic Star Trek. Then I was soo excited when I learned Moffat was taking over because Blink and Girl in the Fireplace are masterpiece's. But then I saw Matt Smith and thought he looked gimpy. Turns out I was wrong because Smith is great in the role while eveything else in series 5 was fucking shit. With the exception of Karen Gillan's red hair, long legs and Scottish accent. Otherwise she's a shit actor. Rory was yet another fucking bumbling moronic boyfriend character to make the Doctor look good. The scripts sucked, the Direction was lackluster and there was absolutely ZERO memorable supporting characters. Say what you will about RTD but he was able, with just a few lines and the right bit of casting, to make you care about a person.

Speaking of Russel T. Davies, I think you're roally fucked in the head if you think he didn't do a fantastic job with DW. He was able to pull together a fucking great group of people and create some excellent Sci-fi television. I truly believe that people rag on him just because he's gay as Moffat's season was completely fucking lackluster and a snorefest. I stopped giving a shit half way through and only watched the rest out of determination. Oh and let's not forget how he managed to take both the Weeping Angels/Riven Song  and flush both down the fucking shitter. In Blink, the rules regarding the Angels were soo clear. In the two parter, Moffat just started making shit up based on what he needed to keep the story going.

I'm sorry, but you swear too much for me to take your post seriously, regardless of how valid your points are.  And they are.

Truth is, RTD and Moff both have their fair share of weak points.  And oddly, they counteract each others.  If you took the best from both guys, you'd really have something genuinely untouchable.

Was that Lily Cole at the 40ish second mark? god,I Hope so. Looks fantastic- hoping it doesn't get to weighed under with that Emo stuff as alluded to in Riversongs opening spiel. Got a fiver that says that clown sitting on the bed shot is from the Gaiman episode.

I don't think it is, I think it might be from Toby Whithouses episode. I think the shot of Lily Cole looks like the sort of thing which might show up in a Gaiman episode. Of course I could be wrong.

I’m actually kind of fascinated how this season turns out largely because it sounds like Moffat has been far more rigid in script control. In Season Five he worked largely on his own scripts and only did one or two redrafts of the other writers work, as such the central thrust of Season Five was largely centred on Moffat’s episodes alone. This season he’s been a lot more hands on with all the scripts which should help maintain the tone. One thing that watching the trailer made me realise is that I know absolutely nothing about the actual episodes themselves, just a few behind the scenes things. The only reason I think the clown shot might be from the Whithouse episode is I know that his script required them to do a lot of shooting in a ‘space hotel’.

He has valid points? "It was fucking shit and a snoozefest" aren't valid points.

That trailer showcases the best strength of Dr Who: we get all the dramatic foreshadowing, but it's followed by our hero not only saying "Eee by gum", but saying it wrongly.

And it's true Davies was better at quickly establishing characters than Moffat, but he was far, far worse in the plotting department.

Also, creepy doll-people are almost certainly from the Gaiman episode.

Moffat does have his faults, but I'll take his over RTD's, and though I'll give RTD credit for basically restarting the whole series from oblivion, I'd happily watch Moffat's first series over S1 from RTD- but I'll also happily chalk part of that up to the fact that they've learned a lot since the reboot.  What sort of "silly" works for modern audiences, and what won't.

Plus I just love Matt Smith's doctor- probably my favorite after Baker.

My issue with Moffat is that it often feels like he's working through a checklist of traits when he writes episodes. There's a formulaic nature to the backbone of most of his episodes, BUT I think the flesh he adds to those bones are often kind of amazing. He's great at defying expectations and crafting genuinely interesting plots, it's just sometimes you know the structure of an episode even before it starts.
