POLICE SQUAD! - ZAZ Team

Watched all 6 Episodes for the first time. It really was ahead of its time and I notice several of the gags are repeated in the Naked Gun films. And all the Guest Stars get killed within the opening credits (William Shatner, Robert Goulet).

"Don't worry, Sir. We have men working around the clock to find her!"
In the background, Cops are working around a clock.

"Cigarette?"
"Yes, I know."

"Time was running out. We drove around for no reason for an hour. We came up empty."

So good. I still think the first Naked Gun is right up there with the first Airplane. I recall the episode with the detectives investigating a fixed fight. The challenger ended up knocking out the champ, leading to this exchange:

Ref (holding up fingers) - "How many fingers do you see, Champ?"
A dazed Champ - "Thursday."

I think I still prefer Alex North to George Kennedy in the movies, although switching Nordberg to OJ was a good idea.

It was the little things that tickled me the most in Police Squad - the way the narrator would announce the episode name at the beginning of the show while a completely different name would be written on screen always made me giggle like an idiot.

Zucker heaven - love it.

Yeah, I watched the series after the movies and I noticed that a ton of stuff was reused.

I was cackling like a hyena each and every time.

"Who are you, and how did you get in here?"
"I'm a locksmith. And I'm a locksmith."

I love this show to death. CBS bringing this back on Thursday nights in the early 90s for a time after The Naked Gun came out was the one act of greatness that network ever did for me.

Disagree. Alan North was great, but nobody brought the hilarious sidekickery like big George.

Fave side character: Mr Olson, with his creepy comments and experiments. ZAZ words + Ed Williams delivery= me FINISHED, every single time

Also, who needs Daniel Day Lewis when we've got Rex Hamilton? [his hat gets it, Abe spins around and returns fire]

Love this show so so much.

Loved the episode where they disassembled the entire car, only to discover what they were looking for was in the glove box. Hell, I loved all of it. When Frank was the locksmith, it was glorious when they looked up and all the keys were stuck in the ceiling.

Dick Clark: "Hey Johnny, do you have anymore of that anti-aging face cream?"

Love this series, for as short as it was. Bought it on DVD when it finally became available.

For me, the best recurring gag will always be the "freeze frames" at the end of each episode. I don't care how often I've seen each episode, I laugh my ass off every time.

Oh, and "Let's go out into the Japanese garden."

Not much to add, except that, back in the day, being cancelled after a six-episode run was pretty darn rare, and I recall my total incomprehension that anything that brilliant was not going to run for years.

Especially the one where they all freeze except for the bad guy who looks around, wonders what's going on, and manages to escape.

LOVED this show.

"There was a recent wave of gorgeous fashion models found unconsicous and naked in laundramats on the West Side. Unfortunately, I was assigned to investigate holdups at neighbourhood Credit Unions."

"And remember Timmy. Next week, bring those magazines you found in your father's drawer."

That following the mysterious shoes sequence, where the guy eventually starts levitating over shit, is genius. Also: Drebin and criminal shooting at each other from behind trash cans, then we find out they're actually just a few feet apart. ZAZ just had a Midas touch when it came to taking a cliche and turning it into ridiculous comedy gold.

Is this online legally? Or on disc? Always wanted to watch it, and I love each of the the Naked Guns to some extent.

From the first episode, Frank and Hocken are walking into the crime scene and in the background a guy is taking pictures shoulder to shoulder with the corpse.

All of the episodes are available on disc:

They're on youtube as well but probably not in a "licensed by Paramount" sort of way.

Thanks a lot man, I never heard they were released. I should have searched... but my fingers are lazy apparently.

No way, Peter Lupus was the original and the best Nordberg, just watching Nordberg trying to play charades was hilarious.

Granted, I crack up when Nordberg actually becomes a really good locksmith, but OJ's opening scene in Naked Gun is a classic.

I guess we all should do a marathon of this, now that Leslie is gone.

I do like the fact that Police Squad smuggles in subversive jokes occasionally like Frank recalling living with another man and then the same man's son and "Married, one child, that didn't work out so he married a grown woman".

I feel the same way. I'm still pissed at CBS for cancelling Jericho, but they did do me a favor back in the day by showing the Police Squad! reruns. I pray to Jewish God, Baby Jesus, Allah, Buddha, and the Flying Spaghetti Monster that no one ever remakes Police Squad! or The Naked Gun movies.

I just watched all six episodes in one sitting. Fucking hilarious.

Some thoughts:

-Peter Lupus as Norberg is even more of a moron than O.J. Simpson was. The bit with him tasting the cocaine was fucking brilliant.
-The titles being different in every episode and the freeze frames, CLASSIC.
-I'd watch an entire show of Ted Olson teaching children extremely hazardous science lessons. "Next week, remember to bring those magazines you found under your father's bed!"

This might be my favourite bit ever. Just as brilliant is Drebin dictating a girl's phone responses to her mobster boyfriend. Perfect words, perfect delivery:

To anyone who doesn't own this series yet: if you're lucky enough to find it at Big Lots, they have it for $6
