Near Dark on the big screen

I've felt guilty for sometime now. You see, I've never seen Near Dark. Then I heard a few months ago it was coming out on DVD. Great! I decided to pick it up when it came out. Just as I was about to spend the cash, I found out this week that I'll soon have the opportunity to see it in a theater with an audience. So I'll be waiting another week.

I'm pretty excited.

Near Dark will be screened at this year's High Falls Film Festival in Rochester, NY. There are some rather intriguing non-horror selections, too. They're showing Kathryn Bigelow's THE WEIGHT OF WATER, Something weird and Korean called THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS, LOST IN LA MANCHA (about the unmaking of Terry Gilliam's latest film), and the They Might Be Giants documentary GIGANTIC (A TALE OF TWO JOHNS).

The whole list is here: <a href="http://highfallsfilmfest.com/films/index.html" target="_blank">http://highfallsfilmfest.com/films/index.html</a>

I've never seen it, but the Creeture says 'Happiness' is one of the coolest movies she's seen in a very long time, make sure you check it out.

I found Near Dark to be painfully overrated....and I even think it sucked.

But hey, have fun.

Well...it's not Korean, but DAMN is it weird. Best musical I have seen in the longest time! This Miike movie is just so much fun, it's scary...loved it.

I stand corrected. It's a Japanese movie based on a Korean movie. You see how I could be confused.

Here's the description:
Quote:
THE HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS (Feature, Japan, 113 minutes). This bizarre black comedy, loosely based on the Korean movie Quiet Family, blends genres to tell the story of a modern dysfunctional family and their shared dream of opening a guest house in the country. Despite all their best efforts, they can't counteract the house's unfortunate habit of attracting guests who all turn up dead in the morning. Any situation becomes reason enough for the cast to burst into a full-blown musical number, complete with costume changes and backup dancers. --just the thing for Halloween night at the Festival. "You could poke around in here for some deeper message..." said Seattle Weekly, "but you should probably just call it a midnight movie and roll with it." Kikumi Yamagishi wrote the screenplay for this kooky film.

I just discovered that that wacky zombie musical is directed by Takashi Miike, the director of Audition. I presume the two films are VERY different.

I didn't list the dates, times, and locations, cuz they're all on the website. I'll post 'em here anyway since WGON is interested.
