PS3 bitches out on playing Blu-rays

Known issue, apparently, especially among the early "fat" models. Still plays games and standard DVDs, but nothing doing on the Blus.

Anyone else seen this problem?

That happened right before I yellow lighted. I don't think that's a common cause and effect though, so I wouldn't be too worried. It was a 60 gig fat, and I probably overheated that bastard just from use.

Yeah, ours (80gb fat) gets moderate use at best. Might've just been its time. Looking at a slim for a replacement.

The special blue part of the laser can sometimes die or malfunction after it overheats, which kills BR/gaming capability. You can actually send the system to Sony to replace it for less than the cost of a slim, last I checked ($150ish?).

Some of the ps3's take insanely long to load a blu, so maybe it's that? I brought Scott Pilgrim to a friend's house and it was a good 3 minutes of black screen and he has it online and everything(updated, etc).

Only mention it as a "just in case".

I've experienced this with Universal Blus more than a few times. It seems that if ANYTHING is mucking up with your connection, it'll just sit there and not load. If you're ever having trouble with a Blu loading, try disconnecting it from the internet. That has cleared it up for me before.

Disconnecting's not enough. Especially with the PS3, you have to tell it not to look for an internet connection when loading a disc, or it'll just twiddle its thumbs when you load the sucker up.

What happens is, well, nothing happens. You put in a DVD or a game, a disc symbol appears under "video" on the menu. You put in a Blu-ray, nothing.

Funnily enough, the disc that didn't work that brought this to my attention was Scott Pilgrim. Then I tried Kick-Ass, which had worked before on the PS3. Nothing.

A couple nights before, I watched a library copy of Angel Heart (DVD) with a barcode on the disc. It whirred loudly in the PS3 for a moment, then played fine. I'm wondering if the barcode fucked up the inner calibration in some way.

Mine stopped playing discs all together. Sony wanted $150 to send it in and fix it, but had an offer that for $130 or something plus tax and shipping they'd just send me a refurbed thin model. So I did that. Thanks a lot Sony fuckers.

I try not to keep my 40 gig fat PS3 enclosed. Luckily my TV stand is just 4 very strong metal legs and a glass top, with all sides exposed (sounds like a circus freak). I have to keep a lot of room for that Onkyo 606.

When I do contemplate to build a home theater in the basement, setting up an AC vent in the private room for all the gear will be a must.
