MARK WAHLBERG IS NATHAN DRAKE IN UNCHARTED FILM

Actor confirms role, possible DeNiro and Pesci roles.

I'm just worried he can't do the intentional humor so well. He can come off stiff.

Thought they'd cast younger too. If he gets the role, the article just said he's up for it, right?
O. Russell Yes, Wahlberg no.

I like Wahlberg but you need someone
with a bit of charm & a sense of fun like Nathan Fillion.
Wahlberg is like a frowning block of wood. Why does he keep on getting cast in movies?
I imagine a lot of people are going to have problems with this, but I think it's a pretty damn good match, and considering how good Wahlberg has been in other O Russell movies, possibly a great idea. And DeNiro would be a damn good Sully. This could be just the thing, actually.
Because the last Wahlberg-starring videogame movie worked out so well.
Much as I like Wahlberg, he's the definition of not right for this. Not even just in terms of humor, but Drake can't come off like he's *too* capable right off the bat.

It's possible Russell could pull that out of him, though.

Having said that, DeNiro as Sully is a damn fine choice.
DeNiro would be a great Sully, but Sully ain't Drake's dad.
Fillion would be great. With any other director, Wahlberg would be a mistake. But O. Russell can get good sutff out of him, as others have already said.
Yeah... Not totally on board with Wahlberg as Drake. I figured they'd go for Bradley Cooper. That being said, he was very funny and charming in Date Night. He can be funny. Or have you forgotten how genuinely funny he is in Boogie Nights? And people don't remember that he had this cocky charm in The Big $hit, which could work for Drake. ... It could work. But, yeah.... Not totally sold on the idea.

De Niro as Sulley is awesome. I had cast James Caan in my mind's eye... But De Niro is a fine choice.

I wonder who Joe Pesci is playing.

Which brings up another question... Will this be a straight adaptation of Drake's Fortune? Or is O Russell making an original story using the same characters?

The latter option makes more sense. Because the games are already such good interactive movies. Better to just create a new adventure and have it fit into the Uncharted canon.

Amy Adams would make a fine Elena Fisher. In any case.

I long for Fillion, but am interested in Whalberg working with O. Russell again. Whalberg was my favorite part of Fuckabees.
I'm on board, and Wahlberg is definitely one of the last actors I'd think of for the lead role, but this could turn out watchable. Especially with De Niro and Pesci on board.
I suggest that they have Pesci play the villain from Michael Jackson's Moonwalker for this. FRANKY LIDEO!!!

Wahlberg in Huckabees and Three Kings is pretty great, and he looks like Nathan Drake, so I think this sounds fun. But yeah, he's awful a lot of the time. Way funnier in Happening than in the Other Guys.

Yeah, is that quote actually saying DeNiro and Pesci are gonna play his family, or is he fucking around? Because DeNiro really is an oddly great Sully.

Yep, because hack-for-hire John Moore is the same calliber as O. Russell, right?
Here's a simple formula to figure out Wahlberg: Marky Mark + Good Director = Good/Great Performance (Boogie Nights, Three Kings, The Departed, I <3 Huckabees, The Yards), and vice versa. In those films the directors were able to get a good performance out of him because they coaxed out the warmth and charisma he is capable of showing. In his bad performances, the directors aren't able to harness that and end up leading him to cold, emotionless performances. He is one of the few big actors out there that are completely dependent on the director's talent in regards to the performance he gives.

I vote for Paul Rudd as Nathan Drake. Tea Leoni as Elena. Deniro would be a good Sully though.
I can think of a handful of better choices. Heck, (speaking of Fillion) I think David Boreanaz would be more fitting than Wahlberg.
I'm prepared to take my lashes for this, but I think Chris Pine would make an awesome on-screen Drake.
I am hoping this free Fillion up to be the Lone Ranger.
Wahlberg wouldn't be my top choice either but like everyone's else has been saying he does great work in O Russell Films. Plus Deniro would be a good Sully, and Pesci would be cool do something. This could be kind of interesting as none of the people involved scream Indiana Joneseque summer blockbuster.
Fillion would bring the effortless comedy and charm, but I guess I'll go with this if Wahlberg promises to try REAL hard to nail it.

Maybe I'm finally getting a bit old, but I had this awful film snob moment when I read this news and realised DeNiro, Pesci and O.Russell are making a video game movie and it just made me very sad.
Sony has let me down by letting Mark put his stink on this movie to game adaptation. When I think of adventure, Mark Wahlberg isn't who I think of.

You won't get any lashes from me. He showed he had charm and comedic timing in Star Trek (and even in that awful Lindsay Lohan movie he was in). But he's already playing Captain Kirk. I think his quota of iconic characters is filled.

Look on the bright side... From a storytelling, cinematic perspective - Uncharted is the best there is. If you're going to adapt a video game into a movie, this is probably the most tailor made. Unlike Silent Hill or Resident Evil, it doesn't have all this geeky, impenetrable mythology to cut through. Nor is it overwrought and cheesy like Max Payne. Imagine it like they're adapting a fun comic book. It really is almost the same thing.

I would have no problem with a straight adaptation of Drake's Fortune. Is the game an Indiana Jones ripoff? Yes. But it's also a better, more satisfying cinematic experience than the last Indiana Jones movie was. And I say that having liked the last Indiana Jones movie.
William Fichtner should be in this movie because, well, he should be in everything.

That's a big right-on about liking the last Indy movie, and finding the Drake's Fortune game more satisfying, Erix. By the end of it, I kept wondering "Why didn't they hire the guys who wrote this for Indy 4?"

I know intellectually what you say is right, and I'm sure it'll be fun and all, I just miss the times that DeNior and Pescis name being attached to something meant something a little more than just 'fun'. Hell I remember when Hollywood used to be about more than just 'fun'.

I feel like we get a bit too much fun these days and not a lot of depth.

I totally get where you're coming from. And a recent revisiting of the very entertaining documentary Easy Riders, Raging Bulls (not as great as the book but still a must see), has me kind of in that wavelength.

However, there is irony to be had in the fact that - if this comes out as solid as it should - it will be De Niro headlining a big time quality blockbuster that is actually really good. And when is the last time that really happened?

Very true.

...and if you haven't read Biskinds book that doco is based on Erix you absolutely must. Its a frikkin fantastic read.

I'm kind of tired of everyone metioning Nathan Fillion and Borneaz for Drake. It's boring. And obvious. Yes I know they're like little clones of Nathan Drake, hell if you spliced their genes, you'd probably get an exact copy.

I'd like someone who's more unconventional (i.e. not a look-a-like, or huge obvious action star) that could handle the humor and action, and who is loaded with charm. Ben Affleck is my favorite choice.

And Wahlberg is all wrong for this.

One of my top reading experiences (books about the business are like cocaine to me. Books about 70s cinema are like heroin).

I need to read it again, in fact.

About a year ago I would have raised an eyebrow. Now... Post The Town, I have to concede that Affleck is a terrific choice for the role.

In fact, fuck my Bradley Cooper choice. I think Affleck IS Nathan Drake.
Seeing David O. Russell have no clue who Fillion is makes me giggle. Anyone who watches this hoping for it to resemble the game in any way are going to be hilariously disappointed.

Mind you, Uncharted did El Dorado way better than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but anyone holding out hope that this is going to be an example of a great video game adaptation are going to be saddened.
What's with Wahlberg's fascination with video game adaptation movies? Personally, I don't think he'd be a good Drake, but then again I doubt this movie will be any good anyway so I don't mind Wahlberg repeating his Max Payne performance in Uncharted.
No clue.

I have no clue if the film will be good as there is no telling how close to the game the film will be. If they only use the name Drake and a relation to Francis Drake, then it's a pretty clean slate. If they really try to make Wahlberg play the Drake of the video game, it's going to be a incredibly bad adaptation.
After The Fighter, my faith in Russell is strong. SOMETHING good will come of his, even if it's not strictly what we know of Uncharted.
Do fancasting geeks ever think things through before making their horrifically stupid demands?

"For this major action-adventure film, you absolutely NEED to cast this dude who's starred in a sci-fi TV show canceled after one season, a movie which bombed at the box office also based on said TV show, a horror comedy that bombed at the box office as well, and White Noise 2: The Light!"
