Sam Rockwell being part of the show's revival cast at the end is one of the most wonderfully unlikely cheering moments ever.

Not to mention we finally find out his absolutely horrendous surname.

Amazing film. Does what it sets out to accomplish pretty much perfectly. Thanking my lucky stars we never got a sequel - you know somebody thought of it!

Everything in the movie is geinus but I love the scene where Allen and Weaver are trying to get through a room with pistons that serves no real purpose on the ship.

One of my all-time favorites.

"You're not gonna die on the planet, Guy."
"I'm not, then what's my last name?"
"It's uh, I don't know."
"Nobody knows, do you know why? Because my character isn't important enough for a last name, because I'm gonna die five minutes in."
"Guy, you have a last name."
"DO I, DO I? For all you know I'm Crewman Number Six! Mommy, Mommy!"

Great choice Steve, I'm a casual Trek fan at best but I love me some Galaxy Quest.

Rockwell's primal scream after being transported to the ship slays me every time.

Shaloub and Rickman are so great in this.

Nice write up. Tempted to pick this up cheap. Anyone know if the DVD is any good?

Sir Alexander Dane: You don't hold the turbo down, it's for quick boosts!
Jason Nesmith: Oh, like you know!

[Trying to explain TV to the Thermians]
Gwen DeMarco: They're not ALL "historical documents." Surely, you don't think Gilligan's Island is a...
[All the Thermians moan in despair]
Mathesar: Those poor people.

Sir Alexander Dane: Could they be the miners?
Fred Kwan: Sure, they're like three years old.
Sir Alexander Dane: MINERS, not MINORS.
Fred Kwan: You lost me.

Gwen DeMarco: Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!

Guy Fleegman: HEY! Don't open that! It's an alien planet! Is there air? You don't know!
[Guy holds his breath. Kwan sniffs the air and shrugs]
Fred Kwan: Seems okay.

Man I forgot how many great lines that movie has.

I love that the bad guys are actually threatening, the action scenes are well directed, and it has some weight as far as life threatening circumstances go all while being hysterical.

This is such a gem of a movie with great characters and heart. For me, the icing on the cake is the top-quality effects work.

I have a question. In the scene in the piston room, when Gwen first sees what they have to go through, her mouth clearly says "fuck this", but "screw this" is dubbed over that. My question is, which line was used in the original theater run?

I can't remember if that was a change they made for dvd release or if that's the way it always was.

I want to say it was changed to keep the theatrical rating down, but I don't know for sure.

As I said when I picked this in the 90s draft, it's not only an affectionate ribbing of Trek fandom, it's also a sincere appreciation of their devotion.

yes it's good. I've had my copy for years. I've yet to pick up the Blu Ray though.

I'd like to see some more love for Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver in this movie, since they do a great job as well, but the scene-stealing likes of Rickman, Rockwell and Shaloub are indeed magnificent.

I also appreciate that it does have a really menacing villain and real stakes; I was horrified when it looked like everyone was dying near the end, and you know that a comedy is really working when you care that much about the characters.

Another classy CHUD MOD!

I saw this with two of my closest friends back in the day, and when we left the theater we began to sprint through the deserted mall, driven by the energy of the wonderful spectacle we'd just seen

I wish I had something else original to add, but my fellow Chewers have already done their best to eulogize this forgotten gem. It's that rare action comedy where there is a touch of dramedy and it's genuinely moving. The stuff where the aliens don't understand the concept of acting is heart breaking, and it leads to some of Tim Allen's best scenes in the film

And yes, as others have stated, the bad guys are actually scary, and that's what makes Allen's mine field sneak attack so thrilling: the audience's powerful desire to see the bad aliens blown up

PS I am fairly certain Ms Weaver did say "F*** this!" in the theatrical release. I can distinctly hear her saying that, and I believe she put the emphasis on the first word (as in, "FUCK this!)

PPS I love the 'crush chamber' with all the random peril. Weaver's reaction is priceless. "Why is this here?! There is no logical reason for this to be here!!"

IMDB's alternate versions page for the film makes no mention of the "SCREW THAT!" line being changed from theatrical to home video. I think you're probably right that it was done to keep the film PG-rated.

Love the film. I think it's actually great in a really sneaky way. A really tight screenplay. David Mamet counts it as a great film and mentions it alongside The Godfather! I just love that.

I'd say this ranks up there with Shaun of the Dead and Black Dynamite as a great mix of celebrating/mocking a particular genre.

Does anyone else get a little choked-up with Rickman recites the "By Grabthar's hammer..." oath to the dying Thermian? It can't be just me, can it?
You are not alone.

Quite frankly, I probably get a little misty-eyed when Guy Fleegman gets his credit on the new Galaxy Quest show.

"Is there air!? YOU DON'T KNOW!!!!!!"

This film is indeed a classic. Better than most Trek movies.
As a dyed in the wool old fashioned "trekker"-yes this is better than most Trek movies. And miles above the Star Trek reboot.
Galaxy Quest, is the...Best Star Trek, film that, isn't part of Roddenberry's franchise. To me, it is definitely...Tim Allen's best film. His take on Shatner is so...Perfect, he should be the lead if there ever was a...T.J. Hooker film!

My friend just had THIS shipped to his house.

AWESOME (though I'll bet Alexander Dane is none too happy about it)

Love it.

This is a pitch perfect film. One of the best from the 90s. Quotable and rewatchable as all get out. Right up there with GHOSTBUSTERS in regards to ensemble comedy scifi crossovers that feature Weaver. And just comedies in general.
