I remember hearing about this when it came out, and wanting to see it for some reason. I think I'd heard about the concept and found the idea intriguing. In all the years since I never did get around to it though

Now thanks to this CHUD MOD, I may just get a chance to fulfill that long standing ambition as I've just added RELIC to my NETFLIX queue!

PS I constantly confuse this movie with MIMIC

I came in hear to make the obligatory "Pe-ter-these-are-lungs" joke only to realize the same thing.

For what this is I think its a solid genre late 90's flick. It feels awfully light on characters though.

It's weird thinking back to the time when Tom Sizemore could headline a film. what crazy days they were.

And yeah, I confuse this with MIMIC all the time, to the point where I get Penelope Ann Miller and Mira Sorvino mixed up on occasion.

This and The Shadow cemented my love for Penelope Ann Miller for all time. It's an entertaining monster flick. Way better than those SyFy flicks we get nowadays.

They completely screwed up in this movie right at the start.

In the very beginning, it was quite clear that only one thing was carried away by the ship while everything else was left on the dock.

So it was obvious right from the beginning the only thing the monster that was killing everyone (starting with the boat crew) could have been and where it came from.

Otherwise it was OK but I found this to be a glaring problem with trying to set up any kind of reveal.

I have a lot of love for this flick; it's entirely derivative but still delivers the goods for a monster movie. It's funny that someone above mentioned MIMIC, as THE RELIC, MIMIC and DEEP BLUE SEA are all grouped in my mind as great B monster flicks. I somehow don't own any of them, but intend to fix that.

I also have some nostalgic love for THE RELIC, as it was one of the first flicks I watched after hooking up my stereo to the VHS (!) player. Made the experience of watching it that much better; I remember the monster's footfalls vibrating the floor of the living room.

I read the novel and thought it was okay, but for me, the movie was a chore, despite Winston's monster being pretty cool, conceptually. Aside from the creature previously being a human being I can remember next to nothing about the novel or the film. I'm in no rush to watch it again, but if I did, I have a feeling that my impression of the film as a generally unexceptional also-ran wouldn't change at all.

Its been years since I've read the book and seen the movie, but I remember hating the movie because I liked the book so much. The Preston/Child combo is basically Crichton-lite, but they do have some fun characters that pop up in a bunch of their novels (Pendergast, Smithback, etc); why bother with the adaptation if you're going to leave them out.

Thoroughly enjoy this B horror flick..Tom Sizemore saying "This thing is really pissed off!!" always made me laugh for some reason....

OK, never mind, I spoke too soon. Last night when I said I'd just added the film to my NETFLIX QUEUE? I'd not yet actually done so when I made my post, I intended to post first and then do it. However, to my horror I discovered this morning that the film is NOT AVAILABLE THROUGH NETFLIX!

What could cause this? It's not an obscure title. Last year I was unable to get DR ZHIVAGO through NETFLIX as well, which confounded me to no end

Any explanation?

Still waiting for a Johnny Depp/Pendergast franchise. Seems like a no-brainer.

I tried reading the book, but find Lincoln-Child's writing pretty horrible. The movie made some odd choices and didn't present a clean narrative, but it was a lot more fun (and easier to sit through) than the book.

Lumping this pedestrian piece of shit in with the compromised but still damn effective MIMIC is an insult to GDT and cool-ass monster movies.

I tried rewatching THE RELIC the other day. What a chore.

Agreed.

I remember really liking this movie, and I still wish it had done better if for no other reason than to see the next book, Reliquary, made into a film. It was an awesome, awesome book and very cinematic and epic.
