A mere blip in an otherwise downward trajectory!

Reminds me that I should finally check this film out. I remember watching a bit of it in a drama class a long time ago for some reason.

Being a massive, massive (massive) Connery fan as a lad I must have watched this film fifty times or more growing up. I love it, from it's dark gothic visuals that were never afraid to show the dirty grimness of the medieval monastic setting to its murder mystery plot (that had such an interesting and original basis) to Connerys 'smartest man in the room' Baskerville surrounded by superstitious zealots to even Slaters quite understated performance, I honestly don't think there's anything in this film not to like.

It probably helped that Slaters eh-hem 'scene' with a certain young mute peasant girl went a long way to help kick start puberty for my young self at the time but the film is a gripping one, from start to finish.

...and it introduced me to Ron Perlman - hell it gets high marks for that alone.

If people haven't seen it I really do recommend it very highly.

Just dropping in to applaud this choice, and note the fine work by the late great Feodor Chaliapin, who played this film's wicked abbot and Moonstruck's courtly grandfather that same year.

I found a copy of this for $3 at Big Lots recently which sent me on a Anaud kick. I had no idea he directed The Bear. And Quest for Fire is essential for all Perlamn completists.

Also: GREAT choice. I have really enjoyed this series of articles.
