What do the Villagers sound like?

The Metric version is better. Even more so live. But to each his own I guess...

Kind of like a weird middle ground between Bright Eyes and Mumford and Sons.

Thanks so much to those who put Titus Andronicus on their lists. Made me give it a second listen after dismissing over a distracted CD store headphone listening. It's fantastic. Will make my list, once I make it.

Since I have some free time currently, I'm currently going through a lot of albums before I make up my choice. Something that's been really helpful so far is the list given by NPR. For getting me into Carla Morrison alone, its golden. You guys might want to check it out.
I almost have my list figured out at this point. I really just need to sit down with the Titus Andronicus album and give it a good headphone listen so I can rank it properly.

10 points to Cognizant for having a list where I just recognized one band. That hasn't happened in a while. Looking forward to trying them out.
I bought several albums this year, but only one released in 2010.

1. Dillinger Escape Plan - Option Paralysis

I did however listen to a Laura Marling release, but I'm not particularly enamored with 'new folk'.
Edit: Oh wait, I bought Crystal Castles and The Social Network Soundtrack

2. Crystal Castles
3. The Social Network Soundtrack

4. Laura Marling - I Speak Because I Can

Oh shit this came out this year. It's great.

I'll probably be checking out or at least youtube sampling about half your list, as the things I know I all like (Alcest, Emancipator, Kaki King, Max Richter).

I didn't love this year's Kaki King album that much, compared to previous ones at least, but boy did I overplay The Betrayer.

Thanks, on the flip side I haven't heard nearly all of the albums mentioned in this thread either.

I saw God Is An Astronaut, with Caspian as support, earlier this year and it was good stuff. I went for Caspian who basically stole the whole show, but became a quick fan of GIAA in the process.

Also saw Kaki King live too, and like I mentioned above I suck at ordering lists but I think I must have listened to her album more than any other on the list hence the #1 spot.

Well, since it's technically a 2010 "release", I link you to this. You might like it.

Hah, I love mashups. I'm sure Kaki would love it too, she showed great humour at the gig. Her drummer had to bail on the night for some reason so it was just her and some other dude who played a weird instrument which I can't remember. She was practically doing stand-up and improvising the whole night, good times.

Have you heard the cover of 'Straight Outta Compton' by Nina Gordon? Still my favourite.
Haha wow no I hadn't. That's great.

edit: really great.

I just wanted to say that going through this list has been a lot of fun. Most of these bands are not in my musical wheelhouse (weird, dreamy indie pop and electronica) but it was fun stretching my palate. Plus, I've fallen in love with SHugo Tokumaru (who might make it onto my best of list) and grabbed a couple of other albums after my marathon listening. So thanks for that.

Tokyo Jihen is an amazing group. Great to see them on your list.
Finally got around to this (sorry, no obscure Japanese stuff!):

10.) Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
9.) Titus Andronicus - The Monitor
8.) The Morning Benders - Big Echo
7.) Spoon - Transference
6.) Yeasayer - Odd Blood
5.) Janelle Monae - The ArchAndroid
4.) The Tallest Man On Earth - The Wild Hunt
3.) Sleigh Bells - Treats
2.) Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
1.) The National - High Violet

Cool list, it'll be nice to go through the bands I haven't heard from before. I think we can all agree that this year has been kind of bananas. If you made the cut off for a best of list in June instead of December, 2010 would still be a banner year for great music. I've been digesting dozens upon dozens of albums the last few days, but if the past tells me anything, the majority of 2010 music I love will be stuff I find after the year is done.

I just realized this post makes it seem that I only love 'dreamy indie pop and electronic'. I meant to say that was my impression of a lot of the music on Cognizant's list. My tastes don't completely run that way, I don't think.

So with much ado, here's my list of 2010's best albums:

1. Jonsi - Go
2. Tokyo Police Club - Champ
3. The National - High Violet
4. Stars - The Five Ghosts
5. Dessa - A Badly Broken Code
6. Owen Pallett - Heartland
7. Dr. Dog - Shame, shame
8. Shugo Takumaru - Port Entropy
9. Das Racist - Sit Down, Man
10. Ellie Goulding - Bright Lights
11. Delphic - Acolyte
12. School of Seven Bells - Disconnect From Desire
13. Gogol Bordello - Trans-Continental Hustle
14. Josh Ritter - So Runs The World Away
15. Titus Adronicus - The Monitor
16. The Naked and Famous - Passive Me, Aggressive You
17. Sleigh Bells - Treats
18. The Drums - The Drums
19. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - Before Today
20. Carla Morrison - Mientras Tu Dormias
21. Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles
22. Cee Lo Green - The Lady Killer
23. Vampire Weekend - Contra
24. Big Boi - Sir Lucious Leftfoot
25. Gil-Scott Heron - I'm New Here

Honorable Mentions: Belle and Sebastian, Underworld, Hurts, Lower Dens, The Dream, Sufjian Stevens, Kanye West, Devlin, New Pornographers (tells you what kind of crazy stuffed year it is when an album of THEIRS can't fit into the best of list), Foals, Band of Horses, Apples In Stereo, No Age, Best Coast (aaah too much good music I tell you), Yeasayer, Janelle Monae (didn't go crazy for it as much as others, but I could see where the praises are coming from), Four Tet, Caribou, Holy Fuck, Tokyo Jihen, Two Door Cinema Club, 65daysofstatic, Major Laser, Stornoway, Deerhunter, The Dream, Delorean, Wild Nothing, motherfucking Posies, (I've got to stop there or I could go all day).

Total Life Forever by Foals deserves even more love than it got initially. A spot on most "Best of 2010" lists wouldn't go amiss either.

Nice god damn list. Completely forgot that Heartland was this year, thought it came out last year. Complete Owen Pallett fanboy and I just adore so many songs on that album. Also gotta give some love for the Jonsi pick. Seeing that song performed live was the highlight of a year that saw me going to Arcade Fire, Yeasayer and National gigs.

Thanks for the complement, Spike.  It took an obscene amount of time to get together.  By the way, I violently hate you for going to all those cool shows.  So envious!
