The first official still from Mel Gibson's puppet-on-a-fist drama.

What were you going to say about Foster, Ms Rappe!? What!?

Wow... Foster looks radiant. I don't know how much that photo has been touched up, but she still looks like she could co-star with Gibson in Maverick without me being able to tell the difference. Gibson... not so much.

Finally we'll be able to see if Mel Gibson can pull off a convincing Dave Coulier.

Saw that ET did a preview for the trailer that's going to be released tomorrow. I could have sworn that Mel's Beaver voice is in his native Australian accent. Could have heard it wrong, though. That kind of threw me off guard.

I've always held out hope that the explanation for Dave Coulier is that Dave Coulier was intentionally failing at pulling off a convincing Dave Coulier. All right - that fried my brain.

I have a soft spot for Maverick. Jodie Foster has never been cuter or funnier, Mel Gibson was awesome, and I hold out irrational hope that some of that magic works its way into this. And it will probably bomb. Dammit.

Gibson's a long way from a 'native Australian', we stopped claiming him as our own a long time ago.

Sorry, didn't try to offend the kiwis on the board. Apologies.

Jodie looks adorable. We damn near grew up together (age wise), and I hope this works out for her.

I was going to say something quite bland like "and there's Foster, looking happily at the beaver."

And then the lesbian jokes would have commenced. THERE IS NO INNOCENT WAY TO PHRASE IT.

I wish it was a giraffe. A monkey. Anything but a beaver.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Add me to the Maverick love. I really hope this film turns out to be great, it's an interesting concept with a good cast.

Haha Jesus. Need to scale back on the scotch a bit. Jesus, that was a gaff. I deserve the ridicule coming my way. *sighs* Ugh, my ignorance shows through again. It would have been funny if I had said that on purpose in an ironic manner, but I just had a massive brain-fart.

Bullshit psychoanalysis - the 'native Australian' accent is Gibson changeling his demons via an impression of his Dad. Someone get me a tabloid journalist!

Dammit, I kept trying to come up with a witty, faux-outraged comeback probably based on The Merchant Of Venice but I couldn't think of anything that wouldn't paint me as a huge homophobe. Maybe you were right not writing this.

Edit: Okay, how about this: Why didn't you say it? Are lesbians not worthy of your humor? Are they not human? If you prick them, do they not bleed? If you present them with a beaver, do they not happily gaze upon it?

Fixed.

I'm just happy to finally get a chance to see Foster's BEAVER.
Foster really wants to stroke that Beaver. But Mel might ask her to blow him first.

Ka ching!

That's easy, just ask her to play pinball.

What, no thoughts on the trailer?
Gives the entire movie away. Other than that, looks decent enough.

Yeah, it sure looks like it. I thought it looked okay, too, if maybe a bit treacly.

Trailer does seem to give pretty much everything away. The premise itself and the players, though, are enough to hook my interest.
Didn't the script have some sort of dark ending? Or am I remembering things wrong?
I feel like after Lars and the Real Girl and Dummy (both of which were pretty good, in my opinion), this movie is ancillary.

No, I heard/read the same thing somewhere. I would assume the "dark ending" was his committing suicide.

It actually looks pretty good, though.

Nice trailer=1 ticket sold to a 2nd run theatre.
If dark is what you want, check out PERMANENT MIDNIGHT (or MAGIC and MEET THE FEEBLES ).
So it's a gently quirky, inspirational, feel good type movie? I remember hearing that the script was really weird and dark all around, not just the ending. Like a weird, pitch black comedy about an unhinged man communicating through a puppet. Assuming I remembered correctly, I guess it should come as no surprise that it's got watered down to this, but still, lame.
