So, way I read that, someone at Crystal Dynamics finally played Uncharted?

I've been playing videogames since 1997 and electronic games for even longer, and I've still never played a single TR game. That was mostly due to the fact that when the series was popular I didn't own a PS and by the time I finally got a PS2, the series was deep into it's never ending series of 'reinventions'. It seems like every year there is a new TR that's touted as taking the series back to basics and making it cool again, and judging by the fact they still need to annually rebrand come Christmas time, nothing has yet worked at realizing that goal

Maybe it's time to just give up? I'd much rather play an AAA Indiana Jones game anyway (assuming Lucas Arts decides to ever again make a non SW game)

EDIT: Judging by the photo that ran with the article, I like that they at least toned down Lara's glamor. Hopefully they can make her athletic and aerodynamic and do away with the unlikely physique from the previous games

Having been an avid gamer since the "Load *,8,1" days of my commodore, I can say that I have never played a Tomb Raider Game. Why? Because they looked absolutely silly. I'm into the "Girls running around in their knickers" just as much as the next guy, but I felt silly trying to take a game like Tomb Raider seriously.

However, now that Lisa Renner is the new Lara Croft, And she is covered with mud? Looks like paydirt!!

I doubt it will be free roaming, never has the tomb raider franchise swayed toward anything as dynamic as that. But it may have to be something I need to check out.

Having actually played the games under discussion, I feel I should point out that the reinvention (passing along to a different developer, abandoning some very creaky old tech in favor of really nice new stuff, broadening the control elements, etc) resulted in some fantastic games. Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld are freaking great examples of the core Tomb Raider gameplay done well.

Having said that, these were really sort of evolutionary steps. If the same people decide to go a bit further, then I for one would be very interested in the end result.

But, of course, that's only coming from someone who's actually played the old TR games and the new ones. I'll let you all get back to [a.] the Uncharted comparisons, and [b.] the whole "girl in knickers" thing. Seriously, is there some sort of Internet law that people are required to bring up these two items in any Tomb Raider discussion? Don't forget "George Lucas has a throat pouch" and "George Bush can't pronounce nuclear" too .

Sign me up for open-world, girl-in-knickers tomb raiding. Really dug Legend, Underworld and the XBLA title - open exploration I could see being a total blast if handled correctly.

i've only played Legend but I really liked it so i'll see how this develops.

It seems like games like AC2 have rendered the TR series pointless, seeing as AC2 is already open world with a huge freedom of movement and has tombs to explore. What is the unique draw for the TR series in this day and age? Simply the character of Lara Croft?

Why would the TR series be pointless? Just because another comparable franchise was released?

A good game is a good game.

All this speculation and assumption. Kate, have you ever thought to actually try a Tomb Raider game? Not to qualify the game on current fads or trends, but to actually just play the game(s)? You may actually enjoy it, in spite of it being out of fashion!

I've played all nine TR games. Legend and Anniversary were good, but I highly doubt this reboot will be any better. I doubt there will be the kind of freedom and interactivity that would be awesome. Like finding stuff and building your own weapons, different approaches to riddles, a more realistic survival experience. If going darker implies more atmosphere and story, why not, but Angel of Darkness and Undercover already tried that and failed at it.

And enough with the quick time events. So lame. Keep that for the "easy" difficulty only.

I just feel that if you can't do it better than someone else, you should focus your energies elsewhere when it comes to game development. CALL OF JUAREZ might not be the best shooter I ever played, but it's Western Setting ensured that I put over 24 hours into it (in the days before RDR). For TOMB RAIDER, it's unique draw seems to be it's scantily clad protagonist, which isn't something I'm particularly interested in. So, beyond that it needs to do something unique to make me want to play it and from what I know of the series, it doesn't. Freedom of movement? Tomb exploration? I feel like I can scratch those itches with the AC series

Anyway, if there was a TR game that got great reviews and promised a gaming experience unlike any I've ever played before? I'd pick it up. It would need to be pretty incredible though, because I only buy the creme of the crop when it comes to videogames

So, you play games based solely on reviews.

You don't do this for movies, I am assuming?

It is a matter of economics. I can't afford to plop down 60 on a game unless it is 100% certain to knock my socks off

Actually, game reviews play a huge part in whether I buy a game or not. Games are a lot bigger investment (in terms of both time and money), and I don't want to play something that's not going to be worth the investment.

1) Not economical for me to rent from any local rental outlet. 8$+ for 5 days

2) No way I can get my parents to sign me up for a subscription based service

3) I am OCD and *need* to own a game if I play it. I will never sell a game I buy, even if I hated it (ahem, TOROK..). Why? Because I need to know I can come back to it to finish what I started some day (or so I keep telling myself with FO3)

It is a time thing too. If I commit to playing a game, I try to give it 100% till I have emerged the winner or gotten so bored I can't stand it

I don't dabble

EDIT Actually I have sold two games - 1080 Snowboarding, and HALO 3

That's fair enough, Kate. I figured game rentals aren't quite as accessible as movies. Damn, $8 is pretty steep though. I wasn't expecting that.

This is probably why I hardly game anymore. I'm still playing Lego Indy.
