Concept art from Singer and Abrams' Superman films appears online

I actually really like that costume, it's a great take on his classic look.

Yeah, the one with the three gems is really cool. But Doomsday looks like a LOTR cave troll with some spikes on it.

I'd be interested to see what the FLBY costume looked like on an actual person.
Doomsday's DEMON TURTLE look is kind of lame, though.

Do we really need concept art for comic book movies when you've got... well... the comics themselves?

I pretty much hate all of those.

Not a fan of the bedazzled Supes.

I was thinking it looked like one of those "ONLY LIFE IMPORTANT" aliens from the Fifth Element.

The Superman design is pretty cool, though.

I don't understand why the bellybutton is a design element that features so heavily into this concept art. 1) It looks silly 2) Most supernatural beings don't have bellybuttons, for obvious reasons

Anyway, I kind of like the look of the cape in one of these images (where it's all big and red and flowing), but it's kind of impractical for an action film. The rest are just pretty much uniformly terrible. The one where the S is formed out of the folds of the cape is especially bizarre. I have no clue how someone thought that could work on film

It's not a bellybutton it's supposed to be the belt and it's a lot more retro than you might think.

Ah OK, well on a belt it makes sense. Just having it there on his torso as a yellow dot against the blue though calls to mind an intergalactic belly button more than a utility belt

Superman: Flyby? Was that the actual planned title?
It's a code name.

All things considered... And, seeing how JJ Abrams eventually handled the Mission: Impossible and Star Trek franchises once they were handed over to him, I think they should have allowed his project a shot. At the very least, it would have been different and interesting.

These concept designs are no more different or shocking than the concept designs you see on the DVD special features for a movie like Spider-Man. They're just test runs. Ultimately, they probably would have gone with something closer to tradition.

But at least Tim Burton and Abrams were trying to do something fresh.

The fact they threw so much money and effort at what turned out to be Superman Returns is frustrating and maddening.

Much as agreeing with PK pains me...yeah. The newer designs made it appear like this weird disco-y belly button, rather than a belt buckle. Having it without the belt looks really, really odd.

It's just a weasel way to include design elements from the costume that they're too embarrassed about (look it's not a belt buckle but an alien thing). Just like the big S for Superman.

But he's got a fliptop head battle-armor He-Man (or more accurately, Man-E-Faces) style!

Me neither. Looks like too warlocky. Especially the one right below the Doomsday pic.

That's if you assume Kryptonians don't have uteruses and umbilical chords.

I've not read the comics but yes that's exactly what I'd assumed

Nice ideas, definite Earth-2 influence it seems like with the black in the symbol and all.

And LOL, yes, because Superman obviously doesn't have a belly button.
