Best Shocker In a Horror Movie ...

Thread Starter
I'd like to hear your picks for the most starting, mind-blowing, disturbing, badass, etc. shock scenes in a Horror Movie. Here's a few:

[might be SPOILERS if you haven't seen these movies]

1. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (78) - Donald Sutherland character pointing and screaming; he's been snatched!

2. Friday the 13th - when Jason comes out of the water at the end

3. Psycho - Normon Bates is the mother!

4. Don't Look Now - The unexpected surprise when he finally corners the "child" in the red raincoat

This has been done mroe times than I can count, but for the season lets give it one more run!

1) Burnt Offerings... a great ending.

2) A virgin watching of Night Of The Living Deads ending is priceless.

3) Try watching From Dusk Till Dawn with someone who has no idea it is a vampire movie. The table dance is amazing.

4) Final Destination... the bus... nuff said.

5) the closet in the Ring.

But here is no fner moment than the hallway scene in Exorcist III. That is easily the most startling scene ever committed to celluloid for me.

"Exorcist III", closely followed by the final shot of "Carrie" and the pea-soup vomit in the original Exorcist. I've also got a lot of love for the jump scene in Deep Blue Sea.

But--bar none--the loudest I've ever heard ANY audience scream was during Jurassic Park's opening night. When that raptor tore through the wall panel behind Laura Dern, I swear to God I heard three hundred people scream in unison. Love.

Doesn't Laura Dern, in that scene, as the raptor is going after her yell "Dog poo! Dog poo!"? That's what it sounds like to me.

******************SPOILERS***********************

The genderbenders revealed at the end of both SLEEPAWAY CAMP and HOMICIDAL were both pretty decent, although the quaility of both films is questionable ...

The greatest shock of all-time has got to be Norman Bates dressed up as Mrs Bates ...

Jason popping out of the water was good too ...

**************SPOILERS (kinda)*************

Exorcist III- the hallway scene, it will change your life

The Woman in Black- the bedroom scene. Wow, it's unexpected.

Mitch Pileggi.

(Thank you! I'll be here all week! wink )

How about the totally surreal non sequitur ending of Pieces ? Even in a movie as crap as that, the sheer mind-blowing WTF-ness of that ending scores points with me.

I know not many of the youngsters think so, but the final bits of Rosemary's Baby where she discovers her sweet old neighbors are actually the hounds of Satan is a shock I carry with me.

Carrie already mentioned. It was fantastic on its own, but unfortunately it was run into the ground after that by just about every horror movie for a span of 5 to 10 years.

The first Kantari demon reveal in The Evil Dead , as well as the famously planted tree root.

Exorcist III already mentioned, but bears repeating. DAMN.

The Phantom of the Opera Chaney is revealed. Still shocking, at least to old timers like me.

More after my coffee...

In 'Seven', when the drug addict who's been 'punished' for the sin of sloth is really still alive on the bed.

I'll put my vote in on this one. The ending of Final Destination 2 was expected, but my fiance freaked when it happened.

PENIS REMOVAL IN CANNIBAL FEROX

#1 - Jason emerging from the lake in Pt. 1
#2 - The twist ending of Identity.
#3 - The twist ending of Sixth Sense. (That one blew by me, a rare feat indeed.)
#4 - The chest-burster scene in Alien. Couldn't eat spaghetti for years after seeing that for the first time.
#5 - The sharks punking out Sam Jackson in Deep Blue Sea
#6 - Most of the kills in the Final Destination movies come somewhat as surprises or twists on the expected outcome, but I gotta give credit to the Bus kill and the Air Bag kill, respectivly.
#7 - The quick-flash of "infected" turning to face Murphy in the church in 28 Days Later, as well as the following chase. Jesus! These guys don't mess around.

Gotta agree on the raptor head-pop in Jurassic Park. My first real "jump" experience.

But my favorite shocker is from The Thing. The blood test goes well without a hitch until Palmer starts to look a little nervous...

One of my faves, I'll keep repeating:

Eyes outside the window in The Amityville Horror . Cheesy effect, but maximum seat-loading. eek!

Salems Lot - The Jail scene. Its night. I think a fog appears outside the Jail door which then opens up on its own. The prisoner awakens, looks around and BOOM! the face of that creepy, bald vampire is shown for the first time. Scared the hell out of me!

Phantasm - the ending where the kid goes upstairs and the "tall man" is hanging on the door (I think). Horrified, the kid then turns around but gets grabbed through the mirror. I was afraid to go to sleep for weeks after seeing that.

I'll agree with the Amityville eyes, the Ring closet and the Exorcist III hallway. they all made my heart skip a beat or two and i'll love em forever for it.

Standridge = ruleage. That Shocker joke was gold.

For mine, I'd have to say the bit when Leatherface bursts out on Stretch after she's just been creeped out by Chop Top in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.

Just a note... Pillegi was amazing in the first half of Shocker. The first half was a good slasher flick, and the second half was a decent sci-fi thriller. But when you try to mix the two.... yuck...

Yes, the end of Phantasm was a brilliant little piece of work.

But one that most will overlook, but agree completely with after thinking about it...

Lord Of The Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

The scene where Frodo is talking to Bilbo about the ring, and he turns and snaps at him with that demonic grimace on his face, but only for a split second. WOW. It wasn't written like that, so you never expect it. And it is a brilliant little addition to the story that had the whole audience a foot off their seats.

the Japanese version of the Ring when the girl starts crawling out of the TV, though the US version did have a few jump moments...

The end of Carrie when the hands shoots out the grave, still gets me now, that one
