DOOMBEAST

I gotta say this has to be my favourite CHUD MAN ever! God, one look at this beauty brought back so many fond memories ... When I played the first DOOM game in 1993 (?) it kicked my ass HARD! It was the perfect game, the best thing ever. Of course when I gave it a try some years later it sucked bigtime but that's only because the subsequent flood of 1st person shooters had brought some damn fine ones amidst a flood of crap and ID had topped themselves repeatedly with first DOOM II and the two (at that time) QUAKEs. But back then DOOM kicked ungodly amounts of ass, it was in every fanboy's mouth and it triggered a new censorship hysteria among concerned, overweight, sexually frustrated Christian Fundamentalist mothers - and there are a lot of them. As I said, fond memories. For me at least. But surely I'm not the only one, right?

I liked Doom a bunch, but I don't think it was anywhere near that phenomenal. I was more of a Wolfenstein 3d man.

Yeah, that was a cool game as well but I preferred DOOM because I'll take demons over nazis any day. Of course if they could make them demon-nazis, that would be just perfect! wink

WOLFENSTEIN was/is a very problematic game here in Austria because of our history. It got labelled as Nazi propaganda by the authorities and it was/is thus illegal to own or play the game. You can go to prison for a couple of years for it, to be exact. Pretty silly if you consider that you pump Hitler full of bullets at the end ... but the moralists probably never made it to the boss fight and made their judgment when they saw the first swastika on the wall. *sigh*

LOL, they did! Btw, few people seem to be aware that caco-daemon is Latin for Shit-Demon. I once gave my Latin teacher a nasty surprise by knowing that word. It's not exactly what you get out of translating Caesar or Cicero!

Wasn't it always said you would need God mode to beat Doom 2. I do remember that game being infinitely hard...

Well, you knew something was up with "caco" period. Who said video games weren't educational?

There was one part where I couldn't get up on a platform, no matter what I tried, so I switched to God-Mode and simply walked up. But apart from that I finished it regularily IIRC. I'm not sure that was in the highest difficulty though.

There were actually Wolfenstien 3D maps hidden in Doom. They were updated with the Doom engine and were actually pretty cool. I played Doom the entire way through without any sound and Thought that it was a great game. THEN I got a Pro Audio Spectrum Sound card and Had my Mind blown. Alas my addiction to the Deathmatch was born.

I made a doom 2 level that takes about an hour to complete. Took me ages!! Was good fun though.

I loved those creatures in DOOM II who ripped open when you killed them and their friggin brains fell out of their skull! That was awesome! Can't remember what they were called, though.

There has been talk of a DOOM film adaptation for ages now but ID Software will not sell the property to just anyone. A spokesperson said recently that a film should be faithful to the games and pleasing to all the fans - or else it'll never get made. Now THAT is the kind of attitude I'd like to see more often!

There were once plans for Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters, Twins) to direct the film version ... It was supposed to be set in space, on a mining planet that gets overrun by demons. But those plans have long been abandones. Which is all for the best as Reitman has proven with EVOLUTION that he's not the right guy for this. A DOOM film should be brutal, atmospheric and gory. Not some cheesy PG-13 fantasy flick with dick and fart jokes.

I remember those hidden Wolfenstein levels in Doom 2. One featured Commander Keen hung from a gallows.

About 6 months ago the rights got snatched up again, but I don't remember by who. The article also said they were going for a PG-13
