THOR TRAILER BRINGS THE BIG BLOND SMACKDOWN - Page 2

Here, I made some screencaps from the trailer. Enjoy.

Whoever said it looks like Flash Gordon is spot on, which is a great thing. Brannagh is doing this as high camp meets Shakespeare which is pretty much the only way you could do a Thor movie.

Amen to that

Coulson's "You made my men look like minimum wage mall cops" reminded me of something I've always been thinking. Being a non superpowered SHIELD agent most suck the pride right out of you. You spend how many years training, fighting in all kinds of wars and being someone all around badass enough to be recruited. And then you end up always being next to fucking gods. People whose abilities make yours look as impressive as a firecracker is next to the Tzar bomb. You'd be all "Fuck my life" each and every day.

And since I don't know much about comics other than the really mainstream ones, did this ever get addressed?
I liked it. Looks like a blast, unlike GL.
And yes Fleed, 'norse by norsewest' is a good one.
I love the trailer. In the midst of many superhero movies out in recent years, I find it somewhat refreshing to have one where mythology and modern setting collides. This movie has a strong cast, a respectable director, and it looks like it will have some of the most eye-popping special effects around. Thor has become my #1 most anticipated summer movie of 2011.
The only disappointment was that, when Coulson asked, "Would you like to tell me where you received your training? Afghanistan? Chechnya?", the response wasn't, "Valhalla."

I love you, man.

But the trailer I'm very undecided on. I'm guessing an hour of Thor drop-kicking people and doing the 'fish out of Asgard water' bit and then finally getting Mjolnir back in the last 20 min to smacketh down giants and gods alike? Cause I'm really not interested in the drop-kicking and romancing Portman and shit. Damn budgetary constraints!

Unless he also has a wacky companion who likes fried chicken, but not adventure. Then I'm back on board.
If Branagh manages to make the stuff not in Asgard not suck, I'm all for it. Right now, it's my major worry.

Especially considering how fucking over-the-top cool the Asgard stuff looks.

I also laughed at this.

Yeah, that would've been great. I was not sure what to expect from this movie, but that trailer did a great job of selling it and making me want to see it. I still can't get over the fact that Kenneth Branagh is directing this. I see some of the Flash Gordon parallels, but think this movie won't be quite as campy given modern-day special effects, better acting, etc. Also, I noticed Hemsworth's Aussie accent peeking through a few times, unless that's supposed to be some Asgardian accent.
A shame that we didn't get to see more of the Warriors Three, because they featured more prominently in the Comic-Con footage. However, looking at the trailer as a whole, I think this is promising to be some pretty spectacular entertainment. Not only does Asgard look as visually ambitious and colorful as I imagined it to be, but there seems to be an appropriately epic sweep in the other environments, from the Frost Giant caves to the deserts on Earth.

Chris Olsen, I am glad there is another Thor fan, in this debate. However, did you pass a test to be, the...Resident Biggest THOR...Nerd? How long, have you read Thor comics, did you read any of the...Jack "King" Kirby THOR? I am just curious. THOR, is not my, favorite Marvel Character, but he is, #3, after Iron Man, and Colonel Nick Fury. I read the Early THOR, through, Marvel Essential THOR 1-4, read THOR regularly from, 1974-2000 and watched the episodes of, Marvel Superheroes THOR, in syndication in the 70's, as well. I am of course kidding about the...test, I just want to see what you know of...The God Of Thunder. Also, are you excited that, THOR, is in Marvel Vs Capcom 3?

Trailer looks better even in the morning. Shakespeare, Flash Gordon, Fantasy, Techno/Science/Magic. Kirby-esque designs: yeah this one has me.

Also, someone said on the other page that Portman might be shown later to bring in the ladies: that's what the shirtless Chris Hemsworth is for. I have female friends who are there for that alone.
I have to say I'm kind of amazed I like this as much as I do. Did you actually pull it off, Ken? Who'da thunk. This just looks like a shitload of fun, Hemsworth looks great, and I love the tone. Really, really pleasantly surprised by this. I'd love to see Branagh knock it out of the park.

Says the video is no longer available. What gives? Leaked too early? Was there a backlash?
Weren't most of you (I didn't keep a list or anything) railing against this movie after comic con and the various stills etc? Since this trailer's pretty much a polished version of all that I'm wondering what changed your mind?

Note: I pretty much love it so far.

It's still here.
I'm not entirely sold on this.

And why has there been so little Captain America marketing? It comes out this summer too.
I like that they're at least offering variations on the superhero formula next year.

Cap USA - period piece
Thor - magic/fantasy
GL - sci-fi
X-Men 1st class - uh...another period piece?
The Mantis, Captain America, arrives in theaters nearly...3 Months after, THOR! To Me, the day to premiere the trailer would be the...BCS Championship game on January 10th! There will be alot of people watching...Auburn Vs Oregon, that night.
Well there's a Real Steel trailer and that doesn't come out until October.
TheMantis, Well, Marvel only has...2 films, in 2011, that they are producing. I guess, they want to space out the marketing. The same thing happened the other year that Marvel had 2 films, which was...2008.

Looked better than the leaked footage for sure.

Was expecting that personally.

HE-MAN, FLASH GORDON, BEASTMASTER 2, and....

I don't mind at all. We could use some comic booky kitchen-sink fantasy right about now.

If only Rene Russo were wearing Danning's outfit from BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS...

Looks like a lot of 80's-esque fantasy fun. I'm totally in.

That was me. And Shirtless Hemsworth completely slipped my mind. I don't think he ripped physique was all that prominent in this trailer, unless I just didn't catch it.

When I said Portman earlier, I meant anything that concerns her and her relationship with Thor. Just the 'feminine' side of the story. This teaser seems to focus on the masculine much more.

Wouldn't Thor answer "Asgard"?

Yeah, he would. Valhalla is where the honorable go when they die. So he sure wouldn't have gotten his training in the land of the dead!

You make some good points, but I suspect the paycheck an agent of SHIELD gets would burn the ass of anyone in the FBI, CSA, or NSA. You get to travel to different planets, different dimensions, different timelines, sounds like a great job for some one-in-a-lifetime experiences. Also, if you're a dude, you'll eventually get around to banging the Black Widow. Everyone else has.

Someone could also believe that because there are extreme threats on an immense scale that it's their duty to help protect their nation/mankind from them. As SHIELD succeeds more often than not, that may add to their sense of being part of an effective organization, rather than just physically inferior sharkbait.

When they're recruited, the officer may say something along the lines of "You were selected to be a part of an essential entity in the protection of the world against threats of an incredible nature. Though some of the forces we face may be immensely powerful, your role in SHIELD is crucial to the security of the planet" or some such.

Aw yeah, looks like a fun two hour distraction.
All the Mjollnir Smash! stuff looked perfectt. I was worried that this would be a Thor movie with a lot of mooning around while Portman stands by looking pensive, but the big tidal wave and the frost giant face bit is just what I'm looking for. I was also a little worried that Hopkins would be campy, but at least in the little bit we see here he seems to be taking things deadly serious which is good.

I keep thinking that based on actual Special Forces (actual special forces, the ones that aren't allowed to wear unit insignia) personnel that I've met while in the Army. I cannot stress enough how big a role pride and a sense of self worth play in making them who they are. It's all about being at the top of their profession. Knowing that not only they're far from the top but that there are in fact several orders of magnitude above them, would pretty much break them.

For an example of what I'm talking about see Blonsky in The Incredible Hulk.

Well, I liked it well enough. I am mostly excited for the Branagh factor, but it looks pretty cool and it has Ray Stevenson, so automatically it's of more interest to me than 90% of super hero films that get released. I do wonder though how someone could have this trailer turn them around on the film. It's the exact same footage from COMICON. If you didn't like that, I don't understand how the same thing only two minutes shorter could suddenly sell you on the project

If Branagh can use Marvel's budget to come up with a single scene half as crazy delightful as his Monster Re-Animation Sequence from MS's F, this movie will have been worth while ("Live. Live! LIVE LIVE LIVE!")

That's one way to look at it, or you could look at it this way:

CAP-AM: ORIGIN FILM

THOR: ORIGIN FILM

GL: ORIGIN FILM

XMEN 1ST CLASS: ORIGIN FILM/prequel

While some of the films listed I am excited for, it does feel a bit like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic, when it comes to the super hero genre. This is not how you make it fresh again

I don't think the superhero genre needs any drastic moves to make it look like it's something completely new, or like what Chris Nolan did to his Batman movies and film them like they were crime noir movies that just happened to feature the Caped Crusader. The superhero genre is still going strong, but by introducing superheroes such as Thor, GL, and Cap, the GA will get to see this genre from different setting or even from different timeline. I think this mixture of familiarity and new ideas will keep the genre afloat, provided that the movies live up to their expectation.

Personally, I can't wait for the day in which superhero movies no longer need to sell the audience on their premise (this guy is Thor! and he is an Asgardian! which means this and that!) and can simply drop a throwaway line to introduce the android guy with a semi-human personality that will help the guy from the lost kingdom of whatever fight the supernatural demon, as an anthropomorphization of [insert concept here] plots in the background.

I think of it like people working in the White House. Or people in the State Department. Like you're trying to do your bit to save the world, and once in a while you'd get a glimpse of Hillary Clinton bounding down the halls, and even though you know she's dealing with shit that is way above your pay grade, it still is kinda neat that you got to see her.

That was the 80s. Maybe not superhero flicks specifically, but I'm always amazed at some of the WTF high concept stuff that made it to big screens back then. Those risks are taken few and far between this decade.

Exactly. Good times...

Woody writes comic books but dreams of being a superhero himself.

His best friend works for the CIA and gets him to deliver secret documents in Istanbul.

While doing so he saves a beautiful Russian spy, Natalia, purely by accident.

She now wants to defect and wants 'Condorman' to be the one to help her.

Cue Woody donning the Condorman persona in real life to save her from Russian bad guy Krokov.

...Michael Crawford and Oliver Reed to star.
