Mass Effect 3 - Page 3

Doesn't everybody in the galaxy know what a Reaper looks like? I know the threat of invasion hasn't been widely accepted as imminent, but surely a corporate miner dude should remember what Sovereign looked like. Was there a coverup I'm forgetting?
There was a coverup, wasn't there? Didn't the Council pretend Reapers might not even exist?
The cover-up was that Sovereign was merely a Geth ship, as opposed to a Mecha-Cthulhu.
Lets face it, your average guy on the street would have a hard time telling one ship from another outside of 'that one's bigger than that one' or 'this one has lots of guns on it'.
Five seconds into the demo for 2, I'm ready to call it the greatest game ever made.
Unless that demo has you pushing random assholes out of skyscrapers, you ain't seen nothing yet.
So does that mean the Mass Effect 2 PS3 demo is out now? I'm tempted to download it just to see what the game looks like on PS3 even though I own it on 360. Hell, I'm tempted to buy the PS3 version when it comes out for some stupid reason.

And yes, it's out now.

Still my all-time favorite result of pulling the right trigger in a videogame.

My Shepard was kind of a good guy in ME1. In ME2, he became an angrier person and spent less time bargaining, more time fucking people up. To keep my trajectory on a nice steady curve, Bioware better give me the option in ME3 to humiliate and/or murder anyone who even looks at me the wrong way.

I detect a high probability of bullshit here, but anyway:

http://www.gamersbook.com/scene/news/mass-effect-3-concept-art-surfaces-on-the-web/

If real: N3? Shepard changes Normandies more often than most people change their oil.

Edit: On inspection of the guy's portfolio site, it's 99.99% fan art. Ignore or speculate!

Gameinformer reportedly announcing the following:

- Mass Effect 3 begins with Shepard on Earth

- No Multiplayer

- Weapon mods are back

The spoiler function isn't working, so avoid this next sentence if you want to go in totally fresh:

Cerberus is out to kill Shepard. Not shocking!

My hopes for ME3. Warning, these are coming straight out of my ass:

Despite Shepard's efforts Earth bites it in act one. Shepard and the Normandy barely escape. Suddenly the Reapers seem to dissapear leaving everyone else unharmed. Shepard sets out to find out exactly what happened. At the same time the remainders of mankind headed by Cerberus claim the Council races staged an anti-human conspiracy, start a massive terrorist campaign and put an obscene prize on Shepard's head. End of act one.

My own ass-procured suppositions (hey, that kinda sounds like "suppositories"! Preparing Foghorn Leghorn voice...):

Outcome of trial results in declaration of war between Alliance and Batarians, which sets the backdrop for most of the game (til the Reapers hit Earth in Act III, at least) and nature of most side missions. Indoctrinated/collaborator Batarians will be the bulk of the Reapers' minions/Shepard fodder. (Shepard'll also get a Batarian squadmate.)

Shepard's found guilty, is locked up for a goodly amount of time (enough for the Reapers to get rolling and leave Shepard in a "weakened state" (a.k.a. Level One)),  and Garrus and Kaiden/Ashely break him out. Hackett and/or Anderson winkingly "oops" Shepard's theft of Normandy 3.

Ultimate plot will be investigation into the Reapers' origins. Liara's archaeology background coupled with the Shadow Broker resources drives that story.

Terrible idea that I hope to my soul isn't the climax: Recovery of some ancient Reaper MacGuffin that when properly used disables them all en masse as they assault Earth. Yes, the awful "Independence Day" virus scenario (albeit actual Reaper tech and not uploaded via Macbook). After a few insane boss battles, of course, likely inside the Alpha Reaper (Harbinger?).

I very much prefer stelios' idea of ditching Earth early. Kind of hoping that if I say my guess out loud, it won't happen.

Unless you're in spoiler-avoidance mode, read the article - BioWare's basically telling us what Act I will look like.

D'oh! I didn't go to the Eurogamer link and I didn't even notice the super-spoiler swipe text you included. /slaps own face. Nevermind!

Now I've read it. I like my idea better.

Still, unless they really, really fuck up I'll get this as soon as humanly possible.

I'm still a little worried about plunking Shepard down into IMMINENT REAPER THREAT mode. Also, Eurogamer says that Shepard flees earth to gather the old Normandy team. Boy do I hope this last less than an hour.

Yeah, if the Reapers invade Earth at the beginning of act 1, they either need to just blow up Earth entirely or set the entire game there (not that the latter is a preferred option).  Otherwise this whole "gallop around the galaxy gathering squadmates and doing sidequests and mining for minerals" tidbits are going to make the last game's lack of urgency seem like small potatoes in comparison.

I mean, I suppose the Reapers could "occupy" Earth but still...

Ah, but which old Normandy crew? The barracks are getting a little cramped after 2 games. I know who my all-star team would be -- and it doesn't include Ashley/Kaiden.

And "imminent" would be welcome; it's the CURRENT REAPER ASSAULT mode from the jump that could potentially make the typical RPG explore-every-corner type gaming feel silly, as you pointed out (edit: and Jamcq1 types quicker than I do). (And nothing in the article rules out my fears for a terrible climax.) But even if all reports declare ME3 a ridiculous failure I'm getting it day-of and likely taking a sick day or two. BioWare somehow got this universe in my brain like no other game in recent memory.

I just want that cut scene of my Geth and Rachni allies assaulting a Reaper armada. I need it.

Ahhhhhh yes. This is needed.

I still say that you'll end up fighting the Illusive Man in either the direct run-up to the Reaper climax, or as the final fight. If you gave him the collector base, he'll be Reapified a-la Saren from ME1.

Yup. My re-invigorated Krogan allies, along with the Rachni and the Geth will make short work of those bitch Reapers. And after the threat is gone they'll turn on each other and drown the universe in blood.

Thread Starter

The Rachni/Geth stuff probably won't have much of an impact. I'm hoping for at least a groovy cutscene with roaches or rowbutts tossing around some abominations. One can hope, though!

Great stuff all around, but again Bioware skips confirming Tali's presence in the game...or if we'll ever get to see what her species looks like.

The current comic book series focuses on the Illusive Man's origins, BTW.

My money is on the Reapers establishing Earth as their base of operations and starting harvesting humanity; earth unifies as a resistance while trying to hold up while Shepard attempts to unify the galaxies forces to take on the reapers.

Im going to go ahead and guess that Cerberus allies itself with the Reapers in exchange for a evolutionary/technology jump and dominion ovr the galaxy; hell, what if the whole of humanity is indoctrinated and used to hunt down Shepard and wage war on the council races?

I love how much of a debbie-downer Trevor is about everything. I literally think he's incapable of joy.

Oh yes, Trevor's posts and article are literally dripping with negativity.

Stuff like that is why I never rely on this place for videogame reviews. Far too much negative prognosticating about what potentially could happen.

Are you kidding?

Spike, he's not saying the game will suck, he's saying he hopes the game doesn't suck.  If the game lasted an hour it would suck.  It's not exactly a controversial statement.

Since I'm trying to avoid as much as possible about ME3 before it comes out, I'm just happy to see "no multiplayer". I didn't really expect Bioware to shoehorn it into this game, but a semi-confirmation that this is the case is still somewhat comforting.

Out of all the trollish fake internet personas Spike could have chosen, I have to say, the Bioware super fanboy was an unexpected one. Still, as everyting he does, it's underwhelming.

I like that Stelios is so fucking sensitive that he views any differing opinion as trolling.

So, you can piss and moan about someone having a different opinion from you, and that's alright, but now stelios is the bad guy? Uh-huh.

I was talking about how Trevor, when talking about anything videogame related, always seems to be utterly pessimistic. It makes reading his stuff really difficult because he's like the Marvin-the-Paranoid-Android of the videogame industry.

This is obviously some strange use of the term 'Utterly Pessimistic' that I wasn't previously aware of. Would you like me to go and stick my head in a bucket of water?

No, no, continue to be the Ian Curtis of the videogame industry. I was just saying how it amused me.

The weirdest thing about your comments is that you don't strike me as much of a joybot, either.

I'm not, but I dislike seeing people make up their mind before they actually get a chance to experience it. Mass Effect 3 could be a horrible rush job which replicates the mistakes of Dragon Age 2, it could be a fantastic capper to the series. However if you're already second guessing the game, seven months before it's released, it seems that your opinion is already coloured.

You must not read any of the articles I post. If anything, I'm way over the top with effusive praise for the series, as well as with excitement for the sequel.

Oh shit Spike, you're hillarious. I take back the "underwhelming" part of my post. Please go on.

I'm hoping the Illusive Man conclusion is involved in DLC after ME3 for about $30, just because I want to see fans angry at Bioware while they rush to pay them the money because they obviously would have to play it.

Here's a spoiler heavy article echoing what we found out last week, plus a few more details:

http://pc.ign.com/articles/116/1161181p1.html

Of note:

- Shepard won't be starting from scratch re: his (now expanded) ability set

- Earth is fucked. You'll spend the game trying to recruit entire species to mount a pushback. Nice.

Oh, that's good. That's very good, indeed.

Yeah thank God on that front. I want to see hopefully more Turians.

I fucking knew it. Still waiting for the rest of my ideas to be implemented.

Day one purchase.
Thread Starter

Lots of awesome, semi-spoilery details about ME3 in the new Game Informer. Yes, I bought it. Shut up.

- Strong hints that Anderson will be a squad member.

- In an attempt to gather the support of the galaxy's various civilizations, you'll visit both the Salarian and Quarian homeworlds.

- The Normandy has been repurposed and redesigned by the Alliance. Do what you want with the mess hall, but keep your mitts off my aquarium, Hackett.

- Expect direct combat between Shepard and the massive reapers, as well as their thrall, which include reapified Krogan, Batarians, Turians, and Rachni.

- Also expect new combat mechanics, like the ability to shoot off specific parts of the enemy to cripple them in various ways.(wasn't this sort of implemented in 2?).

-Space combat will play a more expanded role.

OMFG.

The reapified Krogans and Rachni look fucked up. Alongside those, you'll apparently be fighting waves of helmeted Cerberus cyber-ninjas.

The new combat mechanics bit sounds a lot like "Dead Space, but badassier" to my ears. And I LIKE IT.

That issue of GI showed up on my doorstep today. Why are you too busy to let me read about awesome things in peace, work??
