Mass Effect 3 - Page 10

I'm all for getting your evil kicks in while playing video games with no real life consequences, but what kind of MONSTER lets Tali die and saves the outcome?  JUST RELOAD THE GAME YOU HEARTLESS BASTARD.

It's funny, when you think about it -- Halo 3 is practically the only online multiplayer game that ever got achievements right. Two of them, "Overkill" and "Steppin' Razor," actually meant something. They were hard to get, and by their nature almost impossible to boost/cheat your way into unlocking.

They gave you unique cosmetic gear too, which quickly became the envy of many Xbox Live 'tweens. Cosmetic only. No stat bonuses. We're not talking an MMO here, but FPS, and you would not believe the attention these two virtual items commanded back in the day, because they came to signify truly skilled players, or someone who got extremely lucky. I have yet to see an FPS since Halo 3 contain such merit-based achievements that earned such tangible and recognizable awards.

More shooters need to take that approach, and throw in a few high-bar achievements with worthwhile rewards. Bungie eventually caved and patched the game to make it easier to earn those achievements, but for a time I think "Overkill" and "Steppin' Razor" showed the industry how to do multiplayer achievements properly.

Mass Effect: Infiltrator announced for iOS, a third-person shooter which will tie back into your main ME3 campaign:

Quote:
Take the all-out galactic war in Mass Effect 3 on-the-go with Infiltrator, a fully-featured iOS third-person shooter showcasing stunning graphics and authentic weapons and powers from the Mass Effect series.

Inspired by the deep and immersive Mass Effect 3 universe, in Infiltrator players will help to free prisoners from a hostile Cerberus base, and will receive rewards for collecting evidence of Cerberus's crimes along the way. Every completed rescue and intelligence discovery in Infiltrator will increase a player's Galactic Readiness rating directly through the Galaxy at War system in Mass Effect 3.

I want that coveted, "best-possible-ending" to the series, and if this helps me get one step closer to that objective, fine by me. This isn't required to receive that ending, though, according to what BioWare's saying. As for the sharing of the data between Infiltrator and ME3, I'm guessing EA's gonna roll with Origin-integration?

Tangentially Mass effect related but kind of funny.

A little while ago a tie-in novel called Mass Effect: Deception was released. And it was deemed as both factually inaccurate and shittily plotted and written even by people who love and read a lot of game novels. So there's this guy on Reddit who does an abridged version of it in rage comic form. They're funnier if you know what the faces mean but plot wise they're 100% accurate. And the plot is 100% shit. Since it sort of sets up some stuff for ME 3 I thought I'd share. It's incomplete but I'll keep adding new chapters as the guy makes them. So, enjoy?

Prologue

Chapter 1

Chapter 2

Chapter 3 Part 1

Chapter 3 Part 2

Chapter 4

Chapter 5

So, what that comic has taught me:

1) The author and publisher of that book should be smacked around with a baseball bat reading 'FACT CHECKING!', and

2) All internet memes need to die. Like, really very much, right now.

I might be more up in arms about the book scandal if any of them were worth reading in the first place. They're all beyond god awful.

I've not read any of the Mass Effect novels. I've dabbled in the Halo novels here and there, but I'm willing to forgive something in a Halo novel more quickly than a Mass Effect one. I'm one of those people who, upon reading the new book would've been like "That's wrong ... that's not how Volus suits look", etc. I get deep in the ME universe.

The comics aren't terrible, but they aren't great, either. I'd rather just stick to the map Casey Hudson has laid out for me instead of what comic writers want me to see.

I would rather they get ALL of the ME universe details wrong and be readable, or at the very least be entertaining, exciting, or funny. Karpyshyn may have written the ME story, but I get the sense that the ME games are great despite his efforts, rather than because of them.

But how else will you be able to FILL IN THE GAPS??! Maybe you don't really care about Mass Effect!

I'm an ME noob, just started my ME1 game. And yet here I am, reading all this spoilery information.

It doesn't matter, because I'm that hooked. The game is that good.

It should be pointed out that the comics are either written entirely or co-written by Mac Walters, BioWare head writer of ME2 and ME3. Strictly as continuity-roadmaps, I'm pretty confident in them from that standpoint.

Also, the first Karpyshyn novel (Young Keith David versus Saren) was a pretty decent read, IMO. It turned Saren into a far more sympathetic and relatable villain than he was simply as presented in the game itself.

If we're going to get into extracurricular stuff, I much prefer the flurry of ME faux-slashfic that the ME2 thread produced in the run up to its release.  It added "delicate effluviata" to my list of all time favorite comedy phrases, for which I am...grateful, I guess?  That doesn't seem quite right.

Totally valid, but in the end, Casey Hudson is the guy making the call for what goes into the universe, so I'd prefer to get whatever he's offering over Walters, who I like, don't get me wrong, but I find that more often than not, the comics go for the spectacular instead of the nitty gritty that I, personally, like. I'd be willing to revisit the novel about Anderson and Saren, that's for sure. I always liked Saren. The moments in Stolen Memory where Shepard just steals glances at the Saren statue ... so awesome.

Exhausted from the fight, Shepard leaned forward against the aquarium in his quarters, transfixed by the school of Salarian Sunfish as they swam in perfect formation. He fell into a reverie, imagining how delightful it would be to flutter and dart between the fronds of Europian Swampus Grass with his little yellow friends.

Behind him, the door hissed open. The gentle whirr of impeller upgrades and the hum of Geth capacitors gave away Legion's presence.

"I've born witnessed your talents. Even more than you know, Shepard."  Legion approached him, tenderly placing a synthflesh paw on his shoulder. The touch bcame a caress; the caress became an embrace. "We will experience you for ourselves."

Like a silver phoenix, Legion's massive aerial slowly arose from his genital port.

Shepard felt the cool aquarium glass as it pressed against his cheek.

</STILL LESS GROSS THAN GEORGE R R MARTIN>

The crew of ME2 is such an improvement over the first game.  There's more complexity in Shepard's discussions with Legion -- particularly why he chose the N7 armor to patch himself, "No data available" -- than anything in the original.

God...over at Amazon, watching everyone in the forums fumbling around like a bunch of chooks, frantically trying to share info on other stores who *MIGHT* still have the Limited Collector's Edition available for pre-order. They're sold out of the Xbox 360 version, and too many folks waited until just now to finally decide to get up off their asses and order it.

Jesus Christ in a smoking birchbark canoe, people. Amazon's only had this fucker up since June.

Just checked, I ordered my copy (PC thank you very much) on June 7, 2011.

I haven't gotten off my ass yet.  What's special about the collector's edition?

You get a pet robotic dog.

Just wait until you get started on ME2.  It's leaps and bounds better than the first.  And I loved the first one.  I crushed planet hoarding.

I haven't ordered the Collector's Edition yet.  Should probably get on that so I have a steelbook case that matches ME2.

I think you may be right. Also, do mine eyes deceive me, or is that Kai Leng (from the novels) in that same trailer?

Either way, my "One-Handed" skill increased to 100 while watching those vids.

Ooo, I saw that thing while out shopping after work today. I can't lie to you, I was sorely tempted for a second - it looks amazing.

Yep...360 collector's edition ordered June 7th, as well....

Artbook should be here next week.

I hope those iOS add-ons will play on my iPod Touch.

On a more substantive level, I'm actually kind of interested to see how the multiplayer integrates with the single-player campaign.  Given that pretty much all my friends play Mass Effect, we might have to get some online going....

At this point FemShep should be the only correct option for a player.

And he'll STILL have the same non-facial expression he's worn in every photograph since birth.

I'm currently replaying ME2 with my Femshep. You know what, I take back what I was saying a couple of pages ago. Fuck any idea of making your FemShep evil suggesting any kind of inadvertent sexism; Jennifer Hale as pissed-off Shepherd is just too awesome to have her any other way.

Embarrassingly, I got it mostly for the bonus gun and squad upgrades. I'm glad it looks neat. EA went totally nuts with the ancillary DLC promotions for this game.

(Although my ME2 Sheps do possess a pair of Dr. Pepper space goggles, so there's precedent, I suppose.)

I love how the ManShep trailers were kinda downbeat, emphasizing the impossible odds and all "we'll have to find a way to survive...somehow" whereas FemShep is all "I know a thing or two about killing Reapers",  blasting fools with a handheld Thanix cannon and basically channelling Wilson from The Limey at the end there.

Somebody find Harbinger and tell 'im she's fackin' coming.

Oh and good news: the ME2 armours carry over and the helmets can finally be removed from the Collector/Terminus/whatever suits! Don't know yet about mix-matching pieces and recolouring those suits, mind.

Oh, you can remove the helmets! I might actually use them now.

No way my Obama Shepard gets his face covered.

Article at Eurogamer:

"No More Mass Effect 3 N7 Collector's Editions Will Be Made Before Launch."

Quote:

No more Mass Effect 3 Collector's Editions will be made before the game's launch, BioWare has confirmed.

The Mass Effect 3 N7 Collector's Edition, which costs £70 in the UK, is sold out on a number of US shop websites.

On Amazon.com, for example, a note on the Xbox 360 version product page reads: "Due to high demand (and possibly the imminent Reaper invasion), we have unfortunately run out of our pre-order allocation for Mass Effect 3 -- Collector's Edition for Xbox 360.

"We are looking to secure additional allocation from the publisher and will update this page if that occurs. Please note -- if you have already pre-ordered this edition - do not cancel as you may not be able to re-order."

Disgruntled fans took to the BioWare forum to call on the EA-owned developer to increase pre-order quantities.

But BioWare has confirmed this is not possible -- telling gamers they should have pre-ordered months ago, as advised.

"Sorry, there simply cannot be any more physical CEs made before launch," wrote BioWare community coordinator Chris Priestly.

"The items included in the physical edition cannot be made in time for launch. Sorry, it will not happen. This is why, back in November, I started warning people that the CE would run out."

Priestly suggested buying the digital edition if you failed to pre-order the boxed Collector's Edition.

No "Bun of Steel" this time around? Suddenly not regretting my past gameplay-choices -- Kaidan died a hero at Virmire in my storyline, but I think I'll be pencilling in some "quality time" with THIS once again.

Just so long as the game shoves her ass right into your face, like Miranda's in ME2.

It was on the official Bioware forum. There seemed to be some confusion about whether the Blood Dragon armour would carry over, officially they've only mentioned the Collector, Terminus and Cerberus suits so far but I can't imagine they'd exclude the Blood Dragon and Inferno ones out. But yes, no more drink/faceplate debacles!

Gaaaah, femshep's trailer so much better it's silly. No way am I gonna resist playing the the shit out the demo.

It's probably her dog tags or other Alliance/Spectre ID signifier, but I'd like to think that Anderson's tossing her the keys to the Normandy. With just off to the side, Garrus, Wrex, and Mordin in a line doing a ZZ Top arm-circle-and-point.

I drank WAAAAY too much Dr. Pepper that month....

Also, the DLC madness is only going to get worse, as there's also DLC for the multiplayer side of the game that's been announced.

Specifically, the Mass Effect action figures coming out in a couple months will each come with a code to download multiplayer gear, it sounds like.

You know the Pepsi codes were reusable, right?  As in somebody posted them on the Internet and everybody could use them, no purchase necessary.

Gah.  I'm not worried about the Collector's Edition (I couldn't care less about the physical bonuses they pack those things with and unless the virtual goods are amazing I just avoid it now) but I am worried that all of my saves are now dead on an old computer.  Crazy enough, my ME1 saves died on a computer so I had to play ME2 without my saves (poor Wrex doesn't make it if you go that route) and now here I am with yet another computer and no access to my ME2 saves.  I feel like I'd be doing it wrong if I didn't play through 1 and 2 with saves that feel like mine going in to 3.

I've played ME2 three times through, and I really don't need to do it again, but the wait here is making it a bit tough.
