The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Page 10

Getting next Friday off from work, though not because of Veteran's Day. Taking a vacation-day from my firm, and only a couple of folks there know the real reason why.

I'll be getting the game in right when I need to sleep for the day and then have to go to work when I get up... Gonna be a long shift...

Jesus...that's a fucking soundtrack, right there:

There is a level of commitment on display by a few of you that I could never match. I'm more excited about this game than I've been for one in a long time and I took Friday off work but alternating sleep patterns? Wow. My wife says I'm crazy for wanting to pick it up Thursday night.

I think I was probably more hyped for L.A. NOIRE, but I have confidence that I'm going to be having more fun with this game than I was with that. There is an intimidation factor I feel, being new to the series, but all in all I'm pretty darn pumped at this point

It's purely the fact that I have no significant other that I can maintain my teen-like dedication.

I'm excited too, but I'm not taking any time off work for it.  I do have it preordered on Steam though, which means it will pre-load and possibly unlock at midnight (Pacific I'd assume).  I am kind of tempted to get home from work and go right to bed, and set my alarm to play until work on Friday.  Pretty sure I won't though.  I'll just get up and go to work and pretend I'm one of the schmucks hoping their shipment arrives by the time they get home.

There was an old woman who walked into my workplace today and asked me "Today is the 11th isn't it? My friend told me it is the 11th"

And even though I knew with absolute certainty that it wasn't, that the 11th was exactly a week away, I actually hesitated a beat, a part of my brain shouting "now don't just dismiss her out of hand! Maybe she's on to something!"

EDIT I even tried to explain SKYRIM to her as the way I knew it was not the 11th, but sadly she didn't know what I was on about, not that I should have expected she'd know about the importance of videogame release dates

Yeah, I mean I might try and get out of work an hour early on the Friday if I already own it and its burning a hole through my bag, but I'm okay for taking days off.

Anyway, a week later I'm away for three days at a giant hippy dance party in the bush and have wisely taken the next three days of work off then. Don't see that particular 72 hours of recovery consisting of much other than sleeping and Skyrim really. Hell I'm almost looking forward to the recovery as much as the three day bender thanks to Bethesda Studios.

Also, I feel I have to clarify - my brothers living arrangements right now are less than ample so he doesn't really have either the funds or playing space for hours upon hours of xbox - hence him coming over and playing the game alternately with me that weekend. This will be his only chance to properly play a game he's been waiting for more than almost any other. Hell I couldn't deny the poor bastard a go really could I. We've been gaming together for almost thirty years now.

Less than a week to go!

And... SKYRIM has gone gold!

A guy in the GameFAQs forum has done a side-by-side of the Xbox 360 and PS3 builds, and he's giving the edge to the 360 version.

Finally:

Werewolves are now confirmed.

And here, Bethesda was playing coy these past several months about whether Lycanthropy was actually in the game or not. Todd Howard, you devious bastard.

Why do so many games wind up better looking on the 360? Anyway, excited to hear that is the case

Why do textures always look better on the X-Box then they do on the PS3 when the X-Box is the older system?  This issue has been around for awhile, I just don't understand it.  I'm getting this game for the PC anyways.

@Nick & Kate

The 360 has twice as much RAM as the PS3, which inexplicably only has 256MB. That is not a whole lot of RAM to run your graphics processing off of, especially since 20-30MB of that is resident in system memory. Now that Kaz has been pushed aside at Sony, we can expect the next generation of Playstation to finally have a proper amount of RAM, as the limited RAM thing has always been his idea.

And that's why the 360 always has the better graphics.

Well isn't that as much to do with Sony trying to push the PS3 as a "family media and entertainment system" and stuffing it with bullshit rather than making a dedicated game console?

It has 256mb? wow... I can build a PC like none other, I just never bothered to check the specs of a gaming console.  I was pissed to learn that the 360 has a majority of its games at 1080 while the PC3 does 720.

This is all so strange to learn, since I remember the PS3 being touted as a super computer upon its release

Super computer sure,  super gaming system? Not so much.

For the PS3, the issue is usually memory. Like Zhukov says, the PS3 only has 256MB of main memory, and something like 20-30MB of that is taken up by the OS (at the very least). What many PS3 games do is take a lower-rendered resolution at 640p, and scale it up to a resolution that it can then send on to your TV, usually at 720p, rather than 1080.

The Xbox has 512 MB that can be split in any fashion between the main CPU and the graphics card, and thus is slightly more flexible with how developers can use its memory. Which then usually translates into improved performance over the PS3 for many multiplatform ports (including, apparently, Skyrim).

The PS3 graphics card is capable of achieving that level of scaling, but the system doesn't have a strictly-dedicated chip for it. The Xbox can use its dedicated chip to scale to a bunch of different resolutions at no cost to the graphics card, but the PS3 doesn't have that capability.

Also, looks like Zenimax Legal finally got to around that Werewolf-video.

Should I install the game to my HD? What benefits will I see? I only have a 20 gig HD, but amazingly it's a small install so I could do it, but then have reduced save space

It'll load from HD instead of the DVD, so I would think the load times would be much much faster.

I load all my games onto my xbox HD for what that's worth.

In general, you'll get faster loading-times reading from the HDD than the disc. That said, with some of the older games (like Halo 3), don't do it.

The game will actually perform worse than if it had read straight off the disc (because the game was already made with caching from disc to hard-drive), and because those games were released before installing games to the hard-drive feature existed.

What do load times effect? (besides the obvious - menus, dungeons/houses, ETC)

Would it. Effect draw distance or texture pop in?

Disk drive wear and if it's an older model then you wont have to listen to that terrible Jet Engine WHUURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR that a 360 DVD makes when playing.

As someone who DIDN'T like Morrowind(granted I didn't give it a ton of time) but LOVED Fallout 3... will I dig this? Or should I wait until a ton of people are playing it? I like fantasy stuff, but I'm more of a gun guy in games.

*edit- No I didn't play Oblivion but i watched people play it for hours.

I say get it. It's the same developer and all. They have perks like Fallout and the same open world setting except Skyrim's even bigger than Fallout I believe.

Plus while it might not allow you to blow a motherfucker's dick off with a .44, you do get to cut a motherfucker's dick off with sharp weapons and whatnot.

Note: I have not had any confirmation about an attack that severs penises in this game.

I say get it as well; I was never much of a fan of "first person rpgs", but Bethesda's work on Oblivion and Fallout 3 sold me on the concept for life; plus, you can pretty much go with an archer/magic user character to make for the lack of guns, magical bows and the spells look spectacular.

I tried OBLIVION but it was far too confusing for me and so  I just didn't bother. The conversations took place using a system that I couldn't make heads or tails of, and it seemed like everything was needlessly menu based rather than going for immersion like in FALL OUT 3. I have heard this game is more like FO3, so I am anticipating good things

Well, there's always hope that Volition (Saint's Row series developer) makes an RPG that allows you to do that...and perhaps even craft a dragon penis blade.

I'll skip the typical OMGAR WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU type of post that a blatant fanboy would make here, and just say "yes".

Really, though, if you ever have the opportunity, you should give Morrowind a shot.

I played it for a little bit today, and even though it looks like N64 burger ass, it still warms the cockles of my heart. T_T

Why do I get the strangest sense tho, that if there was a penis severing perk, it'd be one of the first you'd be after?

ETA: While I knew Skyrim was rocking The Von Sydow, I had no idea he'd be being joined by Christopher Plummer, Joan Allen (fantastic!), Lynda Carter and Bulvar himself Vladimir Kulich (YES!) as well. Gods, as if I wasn't excited enough...

Also Captain Tigh will be doing a voice

SKYRIM UNICORN INFO from Todd Howard:

Quote:
In Oblivion, it was possible to find a unique unicorn. Is there such a thing in Skyrim too, for example an abominable snowman?

- I will not reveal everything here, this is a treat in the game! But yes, we have a hidden content, and it's not a unicorn.

A worrying tidbit:

Quote:
In Oblivion game performance began to decline after a while. Have you fixed this?

- This is actually something we sorted out with a patch for Oblivion. I feel that we have much better grip on the platforms we are developing now. This is still a game people can come to play over 500 hours, and it is a challenge for us. We are much better, but cannot guarantee that you can play so long without problems.

I just discovered that, due to a handy quirk of the timing of our rent payments, I have $300 more for non-rent purposes than i thought I have.

Oh, shit... My 'You've bought too many games recently and can't buy any more for a while' stance could get a wee bit wavy over the next few days...

Amusing SKYRIM rap video:

Slightly off-topic, but do you guys mind if we talk a bit about open-world RPGs vs more linear ones like Dragon Age and other Bioware games?

I’m an old-skool gamer, grew up with the AD&D goldbox games, Wasteland, Fallout 1 and 2, bioware RPGs and Japanese RPGS. I’ve never completed an open world game like GTA, Morrowind, Oblivion or Fallout 3. I often start out all excited with the new game, but get bored with it within a few weeks when there isn’t a strong plot propelling me forward.

I wonder if this has something to do with my generation? Is it because I grew up playing linear adventure games and RPGs, and I just can’t adapt to an open sandbox type game? Or is it because being married with kids, so I don’t really have the time and patience to spend hundreds of hours on a game?

I was born in '76, grew up with many of the same games as you and I fucking love the things. These are the games I used to daydream about as a kid, worlds you could truly be lost in. In many ways its simply a continuation of the dice and pencil role playing I did as a kid, only now the DM is Bethesda and the world is completely open to me.

Yeah, I agree with that. A lot of the dice-and-pencil RPG playing I've done had a kind of semi-structured, semi-freeform quality that open world games feel pretty close to, especially Bethesda's.

Agreed.  Born in '75, played a lot of those games as well, and fell madly in love with Oblivion when I got my Xbox360 in 2006 or so.  Felt like the restricitions of those above-referenced game types were finally broken with the open world scenario.

I grew up with old-school Ultima, Might & Magic, the AD&D Gold Box series (whose party/storyline-carryovers presaged Mass Effect by a good couple of decades), stuff like The Magic Candle, the early Interplay Fallouts, Planescape, etc., on PC, along with a healthy diet of Japanese console RPGs...and, to this day, I find myself growing more and more disenchanted with the latter style of design.

I can still play them (like FF XIII recently), but my god, has Bethesda spoiled us for other types of gaming.
