The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Page 13

I wish video game reviews weren't so stupendously useless.

I actually got the Target employee to >get Skyrim out of the box and was handing it to me< when the computer said "NAH AH AHHHH can't sell till FRIDAY DOUCHEBAG!!"

Got the new Sonic game for my stepson. Hey now, that shit is pretty fun.

Seriously, Amazon, just put it in the damned mail! You have it! I know you have it and I know you know where I live because I told you! Lick the damn stamps and put it in the mail!

ETA: Apologies. Lost myself for a moment there. Won't happen again.

You all trusted Amazon's release date shipping? You fools! I would never trust UPS with such a task.

Myself, I'll be letting the GameStop midnight special shine its ever-loving light on me.

Normally I'd be wary, but it worked out for DEUS EX in August so I have faith. Besides, AMAZON knows that launch day is a big deal for gamers, and if they are not reliable, people won't trust them going forward and they stand to lose alot of business

Thats my hope, anyway

Tonight I'll be trolling the pair of local 7-11s, of all places, that have been known to break street date for videogames. But failing there, tomorrow morning I'll just pop into the Best Buy that's on my commute and grab one of the hundreds they'll have laying about. That place is a consumer ghost town.

When I placed the order I had a job and wasn't going to be able to do midnight pickup and used a gift card.

What with game stores always running the fuck out of copies, Amazon and UPS deliberately colluding with each other to screw people out of a joyous three day weekend (dear god Rain Dog, there should be a circle of hell reserved for people who don't get a man his game on time), I wish XBOX Live and PS3 store would offer THE BIG TITLES online day and date. No dealing with dipshit teenagers, none of This Crap, no office mailroom idiots. Basically, they take the middle men out of the process, save for the useless fucks at Verizon who never have my internet working...

Sorry, it's just putting one's faith in others to get this to you is always a gamble. Sure, it pays off more often than not, but it seems like companies vastly underestimate the level of demand such things have.

Sorry, /rant over.

  Wait, what?

It's just internet nerdrage, Kate. It seems like they do, so therefore, they must be doing it.

Thanks Doc Happenin, I got that, but I didn't know if it was in reference to something having gone wrong with AMAZON UPS shipments of SKYRIM

Oh no. But I've definitely ordered many same day deliveries that have somehow ended up in my possession a day or two late.

The one time I didn't get a game on the day of release shipping from Amazon was for Mass Effect 2. I immediately went out and had to buy the normal version since Best Buy didn't have the CE I ordered. When I got my CE the next day I then gifted my normal game to a friend and yes, it was worth it, I'll be damned if I was going to wait an extra day to play it! And I'll be doing the same thing for this game as well without shame if I don't get it from Amazon tomorrow.

I'm actually going to head up to a Best Buy up the road at midnight tonight that will be open for this and the Harry Potter DVD.  I'm getting it for PC, so I'm not too concerned about it being sold out, I'm just impatient and want to get it installed so first thing tomorrorw morning I can jump right in.

And damn this weekend.  Due to my girlfriend having a birthday next weekend, I only have this sixty bucks budgeted for myself since I have been waiting on this game forever.  Now I find out the Tyler Stout Assault on Precinct 13 poster goes on sale tomorrow through Mondo, and Radiohead tickets go on sale for here in Austin Saturday morning.  Damn my lack of a deep bank account!

Amazon has proven time and time again to be reliable for me (I live near Boston), so I'm not too worried.  Either way, I also have Monday off and next Thursday.  I have to stock up on hot pockets.

So, how many of you guys ordered the big ass collector's edition for this?

It looks really cool no doubt, but I figure:

A) I don't really want the guide (for reasons mentioned previously in this thread)

B) As cool as that statue is, I've been trying to avoid looking at photos of it lest I spoil the appearance of Alduin the world destroying dragon for myself (plus the base looks kind of under detailed in its painting)

C) I don't have the money for it. My mom is buying me SKYRIM as like a huge favor, so I cannot justify getting the big box

It sure does come beautifully packaged though!

I am out in western Mass, but I will take this as a good sign

Over at the supremely awesome Giant Bomb, they are streaming 12 hours of them playing the game.  Swords, motherfuckers.  SWORDS.

After looking at their quick look for SR3, I don't know which of these two games I want to play more.

I checked the Metacritic score this morning and it was at a whopping 95 with 31 critic reviews.

Then, I just checked one minute ago since I'm obsessed and there were 49 critic reviews.  The score went up to 96.

I think we are looking at the Game of the Year.

Maybe it's not the most anticiparted game of all time, but it certainly is for me.  I have never looked forward to a new release as much as this one.

I will be in line in seven hours. Freezing my ass off.

The Gamestop I pre-ordered it at told me to come at 10 and show them my receipt, then hang out until 12. I'm not good with small crowds of people but I'm really hoping to not be surrounded by a bunch of blithering gamer weirdos. Maybe I'll just grab a newspaper, bury my face in it, and not put it down no matter what anyone says.

Thanks for posting this. It's a nice 720p feed too. It'll keep me happy 'til Steam unlocks the game in about 8 hours.

Well, I live about 20 miles from the nearest Gamestop, and was gearing up to go wait in line for two hours... but a quick call to the Meijer down the street nullified those plans, since it sounds like I'll be able to walk right in and pick it up at 12:01 AM, and be home playing it by 12:15. For the win.

That must be nice. Gamestop is closer to me than everything else, but not by much. The only reason I pre-ordered it is because money has been so tight lately that I knew when I had it 2 weeks ago I wouldn't still have it this week. Living on a farm is really quite expensive. Between my goat and miniature donkeys and truck and dogs and cats and tools and gas and oh god it is stressful.

I may have ventured a bit off topic here. So, Skyrim in like 6 1/2 hours. I'm pretty jazzed.

I'm stoked to kill some giant rats in the basement/attic of some Dunmer lady with the surname Thelas!

And I have to say, Oblivion has a notable shortage of naked Nords standing at the side of the road, so I am hoping Skyrim brings the ratio back up to Morrowind levels.

Well, you could devote your time to stealing clothes from all the Nord households you find.

I wonder if that would work.

Okay, okay, okay...

...okay, okay, okay...

so - one of the big chain stores has gotten smart and dropped the price on Skyrim.

Their copy is now only $10 more than what I paid for the copy I'm not getting until Monday. $50 for an extra 2 days of playing I couldn't justify - but ten?

I'm heading into my pre-order joint this morning and seeing if I can cancel that order, or at least get store credit. Then I'm off to the big store.

I have had this weekend booked for months, this is gaming xmas. I am not running the fuck downstairs to find nothing sitting under my xmas tree today. I am getting this fucking game - and not at the ridiculous full (over)price.

That picture is more like what I'll be like.  Thanks.

I am fasting today in prep for SKYRIM. The pizza and butterfly wings will taste all the better tomorrow as a result

I can't imagine them denying you store credit. Best of luck, RD.

Run, RD! Run like the motherfucking wind and get Skyrimmed up!

That sucks about Dungeon Crawl. I had to hang around in the CBD yesterday to pick up a birthday present and lo and behold, a PC copy of the game ended up in my basket. naturally, I had to wait till midnight for the game to unlock on Steam, but after installation and downloading the 200MB patch I managed to get in just over an hour before my poor frame gave in and I had to go to bed. The opening is really fun. That's all I'm saying.

At the moment I'm at work, tired as all fuck but it was worth it. Can't wait to jump back in.

so, based on how crazy this thread is, I decided to pick it up tomorrow.   Never played Elder Scrolls, so i have no idea what this is, so it better be good!!!!  I just know it was made by the people who made Fallout 3, which I love.

Anyways, since it is number 5, what does that mean?  Is it a sequel, in the sense that it's the same characters?  Is it like Fable, where it takes place in the same world, just a different time with new characters?  Or is this like Final Fantasy where it's "name only"?

Fallout 3 is made by the people that make Elder Scrolls. Believe that.

They all take place in the same world, though in different times. The "mythology" of the world is consistent and very deep and intricate. You will be able to jump right in to Skyrim. Your experience might not be as deep as, say, Leto's (whose knowledge astounds me), but you won't be missing any thing.

Choice (B).

As far as "getting into it" goes, you should be good -- Fallout 3 followed the same philosophy.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Mikel!

As a fellow Elder Scrolls virgin, I'm trying to burn away the day at work by reading up on the lore. Holy shit, there's a lot of it.

That is an interesting point.. To some degrees I feel left out because I don't know the mythology of the series, but it all seems so vast I wouldn't even know where to begin to catch up. I don't want to do a *huge* amount of reading, but is there a really good 2-5 page summery anywhere out there?

NeoGAF has a pretty damn good "in-a-nutshell" overview right on the first page of their main Skyrim thread.

But if you pick up (and read) every in-game book you come across, you'll eventually osmose enough lore to max your Elder Scrolls-fu out before you even know it.

Awesome!! Thanks, Leto

Oh yeah, wasn't able to switch to release date shipping when I had my Amazon Prime membership.  Will have to wait until next week.

Still have Undead Nightmare and Battlefield 3 to tide me over.

Looking at that thread though, how nontraditional does Elder Scrolls get?  I mean, there are elves and orcs and stuff, but the lizardmen and catpeople seem a little out there.

You fuckers have convinced me to buy Skyrim.  You'd best be here to support me when my video game arachnophobia kicks in.  (Seriously, it's video game arachnophobia -- I have no problems with the buggers in real life, but game spiders really seem to get to me.)

I suffer from paralyzingly intense real life arachnophobia, but I don't expect this game to bother me (tooo much), because from what I've seen, it features giant tarantulas and not giant regular spiders with thin legs. Tarantulas bother me much less

I have to agree, though that is entirely about my own preconceptions when it comes to fantasy, I can see how being already being steeped in the mythology of ES would change ones perspective. I'm not too worried about it though because from what I've read, there are not going to be too many of 'em

Cheers Leto! NeoGAF may have an unhealthy obsession with ridiculously intricate official thread first posts, but this is one that's very useful.

Also Kate, been checking out this wiki. It's a bit scattershot as wikis tend to be, but it looks pretty comprehensive: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Main_Page

One hour and forty minutes, and Steam releases that nifty little preload, and lands it neatly in my lap.
