I tried to play OBLIVION, but couldn't get into it. The game world looked cool, and so did the universe, but it seemed too stat intensive and text heavy (the NPC conversation system confused the heck out of me. I much prefer FO3/ME style dialog options), and the improbable fantasy monsters (flying skulls with wings) turned me off

The idea of a game set in a snowy world is very cool (reminds me of LOZ:MM!) but I am curious if fans of this series and Bethesda expect this new game to be closer to FO3 than OBLIVION. I can't deal with too many stats or weird pie chart based conversations!

PS This all may be a moot point because I've not even finished FO3 yet

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Oblivion you were playing.

No, it definitely was. I was accosted by the skulls during my first night in the game world after leaving the dungeon

Almost positive there are no flying creatures in Oblivion.

There's actually not any flying skulls in the game at all.

What is a probable fantasy monsters

It kind of floated a few feet off the ground and had little wings

I swear I am not making it up, but whatever. Perhaps my memory is faulty

An imp, I assume.

Can't be certain but no, I am pretty sure it was a skull with wings, possibly on fire

And that image disproved the whole "no flying enemies in OBLIVION" thing pretty neatly

Hopefully I'll be done with Fallout: New Vegas by the time this comes out.

To be fair, I thought you were being assaulted by flying creatures, above you in the air, like the cliff racers in Morrowind. There are creatures that hover/float in Oblivion but none that actually attack from above. Frankly, I forgot that Imps technically "fly" since it's about three feet off the ground.

And I hate to dwell on this--OK, I don't--but there is literally nothing in Oblivion's rather small bestiary that even remotely resembles a flying skull with wings on fire. Sorry, PK, but it's sort of amusing/bizarre that you hallucinated an enemy which you found disappointingly unrealistic.

Haha, fair enough. I wonder where that mental image comes from then. Weird!

Anyway, does anyone have any info on dialog checks and skill points and stuff? I prefered FO3 to the weird pie chart system from oblivion

The Speech minigame is a bit strange. You have to time a sequence of "more" and "less" buttons that correspond to the NPC's face. If they're smiling for a category, you want the "more" button in that category. I didn't bother looking at the NPC's reactions the first time I did it, so I was confused for a long time. It does provide some more fairness than the random chance in Morrowind, but like picking locks, it got old rather fast.

I bet you're thinking of the flaming skulls from the N64 Zeldas, Kate.

I just got finished with two years of looking at snow and skulls in Northrend. Hopefully I'll have had enough of a break by next November.

That was the problem with me. I am sure it's a functional minigame, it just doesn't seem to have much to do with how actual people interact. I prefer dialog option trees. Not saying they're better than pie charts, just my preference

And... perhaps! I really don't know what I was thinking of. Maybe it was the imps, who knows
