Looks like Gibbs isn't really in on this one, either. Those kids in the background better be incredibly interesting and not just there to replace Will and Elizabeth or this could be a real drag. Shame, because I really want this to be good.

Looks dreadful. By which I mean, its very pretty. But completely uninspired.

I like Gibbs and if we had to bring back a side character (even for a bit - probably the best way to do it, really) he'd be the one for me, but I really hated how the last three tried to keep almost every side/bit character around for some reason or another.

But yeah, here's hoping those two youngsters don't bog this thing down with another bland romance plotline.

ETA: Honestly, I'm sounding more hopeful here than I really am. Trailer didn't do much for me aside from expecting another "epic" trilogy that doesn't really work.

This looks fun enough. I wonder if it isn't almost predestined to be remembered as the odd man out of the series, though. Coming as it does after what ended up being a trilogy about Bloom and Knightley's characters, it's as if the Sparrow character has said his goodbyes, walked away slowly, and keeps looking over his shoulder to see if you notice him going.

Are we just now going to get a movie about his journey? Or is he going to remain this irrepressible force of nature for a new central character or characters to bounce off of?

To be honest I was never even that impressed by the look of these Pirates movies. There's always something a bit Hook-like in its staginess and the costumes always look meticulously designed instead of like genuine grotty pirate garb. I'm not demanding another Master and Commander (well, actually I am, just not from this), but even a pinch of that movie's nautical atmosphere would do wonders for this series.

That said, at their best these movies are fun, and ditching the dead weight of the Bloom/Knightly plot and throwing in the guaranteed greatness of Ian McShane's Blackbeard means I can't write this off just yet. I guess it remains to be seen whether Sparrow actually works as a leading man.
Looks like a carbon copy of the others. With the trilogy behind them and a new director on board they should've taken a chance to switch things up and make it less Pirates of the Caribbean-y
post #8 of 71
I'm not sure why Andre assumes Rush's part won't amount to more than extended cameo. Based on that trailer, it looks to me like Barbossa is in the majority of the film.
"Uninspired" is a great word to describe this. And visually boring - which is the last thing these should be.

Did like the very last bit of Sparrow saying he wouldn't do the jump again...but the rest. Ugh. Desperate and uninspired.
I will be the odd man out and say I enjoy the series and this looks like more of the same and brought a goofy smile to my face. And now, I want the cold weather gone even more and some rum and a sailboat.
I don't know, I thought it looked like pretty much what I was hoping for. Pirate stunts and a great cast. And the third one proved that I can find some enjoyment out of those things even when the movie is terrible. I'd be shocked if this wasn't better. So while these movies might represent the soullessness of a corporate marketplace, I got no problem paying ten bucks to enjoy pirate adventure.

The only problem that might arise is if we have one of the summers where everything kind of sucks (like the last summer there was a pirate movie). If its just a steady stream of suck, with Thor, GL, Cars, Cowboys, and this plus everything else all being awful, that gets pretty wearying. And despite my optimism about most of those, it's certainly possible. I figure if half of them are good fun, that's not a bad ratio.
Looks fine. Hopefully it's a bit trimmed.
It also looks like someone poured hot wax on Rush's face.
Get me into the theater for one shit sequel, shame on you. Get me twice, shame on me. No go.
More Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. I'm easily sold.
Is Marshall directing parts 5 and 6?
As far as anyone knows, yes he is.
I think it looks pretty fun, though I'm torn between "Wheee, Barbossa!" and just a weariness at seeing Sparrow doing the Sparrow thing. Which sucks because I really like the character.

I *think* the Orlando Bloom lookalike character is a priest, which might quash the romance. Other than Penelope Cruz, I'm pretty sure all the other female castmembers were mermaids. Which would explain why the Knightley brunette seems to always be in the water.
See, now a priest falling in love with a mermaid is something I could get behind. I imagine they might have hired a couple of writers for 5 & 6, but if there's any forward movement on those before the opening weekend for this one comes in, I'd be surprised.
Mermaids, zombies and Blackbeard? I'm most definitely in.

I like how McShane seems to be playing Blackbeard relatively straight, which should make for a nice contrast.
Yeah, I'm in. It looks like more of the same, which I'm actually fine with. Blackbeard should have been part of the pirate council, or whatever. Maybe that'll be mentioned, or I might have lost focus about the pirate council.
I'm an easy lay for this series, so I'm on board. Just wish someone with a more visual eye was directing. Imagine a Del Toro or Michel Gondry Pirates movie and then sigh at who they settled with.
I'm not sure I want another Pirate movie, even though it stars Johnny Depp (who can make bad movies somewhat decent).

This. Absolutely this. AWE left such a bad taste in my mouth - especially after how much I loved (and still love) DMC - that I'm really wary of biting down on another shit sandwich.
Were people really begging for more Jack Sparrow? I could see this being a dud.

There's a pretty strong chance he was kickin' it at the Fountain Of Youth and everybody thought he was dead. You know what this trailer needed? Stephen Graham! I'm hoping for a great film and I haven't seen anything here that dissuades me from feeling that is what we'll get, especially considering most people thought the first movie's trailer was lousy.

Though, if they ARE going to keep making POTC movies, I'd really like to see them take it to a whole new tonal level at some point, Temple Of Doom style with a fresher, hardier, spookier, more Robert E. Howard feel. You know who I'd actually love to see have a hand in developing the next POTC film? Mike Mignola.
I've seen some comments elsewhere about it looking cheaper.. I'd only agree with that because there were less computer generated images in that trailer than there were in AWE for example.

This one seems much closer to Black Pearl with the scenes in a city and land based travel. The mermaids are a welcome addition.

Did anyone else notice the writing credits at the end?

Suggested by the novel ...
Based on the characters created by ...
Based on the ride ...
And, oh, yeah, screenplay by ...

Kind of hilarious.

Yep.

...and we know how that usually goes.
I can't hate that.
Hopefully they'll tone down Jack Sparrow at least a little bit, but it looked good enough. I liked all three movies, though the third was the worst of the lot.

There's stuff to be worried about, but it looks like they're trying.

True, I do get the feeling we're in for a bit of a funny tasting cake once it's baked tho.
I did get a Orlando/Knightley vibe from those two as well. Other then that, I'm sold.
It looks decent. I like that we no longer have to see Elizabeth or Will as their story was getting boring and was over with in the last film. Ian McShane and Penelope Cruz's appearances and the mermaids have me intrigued.
McShane looks like he was born to play a pirate. I'll watch this based on him alone.

oh yea and more pirate battles.
stupid doublepost
Why can't they just make a Monkey Island film already? The first Pirates was ok but if ever a film trilogy was bloated more than a dead Kraken, it was this.
Eh. At World's End's problem was trying to do too much in too little time, throwing out everything great about Dead Man's Chest in the process, and failing at the whole lot. Wiping the slate clean has possibilities.

That trailer neither wowed or dismayed me. It's just there. I still have faint hope I'm not saying that about the movie next summer.

Isn't that pretty much Dead Man's Chest?

This played flatter than Kiera Knightley's front half for me. I appreciate the step back from the TOO MUCH-ness of At World's End, but I really don't need to watch two hours of Depp jumping between horse-drawn carriages and making goofy faces. Again.

What a weird pseudo-complaint/prediction. "Boy it'll sure suck if this movie and all the others that summer suck. They might not, but they might."

Indeed. I'm only hesitant because I think AWE dropped a few balls. And this trailer (I hope it's just the trailer) seemed a little, as it was said, "uninspired".
As much as I liked Dead Man's Chest, it and At World's End suffered from trying to add too much and tie too much together. This looks like it's free of that burden and is just a Jack Sparrow adventure. Which is really what I'd hoped the first two sequels would be.

That's what's weird about this - it's incredibly flat and boring. It's almost nothing but people walking around. With the possible exclusion of the end scene (the jump and the pithy remark), there's nothing in the trailer that gives me a jones to see on the big screen. Or any kind of screen, really.
Maybe they should've waited a bit with releasing the trailer. There are obviously hardly any VFX ready yet (the few that were looked atrocious) and a 2.30 trailer based around nothing but the live/practical stuff isn't really that exciting.

Despite the yawn that was AWE, I look forward to this.
It actually looks like fun. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't happy to see Captain Jack Sparrow again, and I'm surprised at how happy I was to see him again, actually. If it's just a good adventure film with a better sense of focus then I'll be satisfied. Viewing it like that, well, it leaves plenty of room for me to actually be impressed. I understand that they rake in the cash, but the thought of 2 more coming does sort of fill me with a bit of apprehension though. Again, all they need is focus. If they can get that down, then I say bring it on.
Didn't like this at all. Looks to be completely paint by numbers.
Who plays the mermaid who has a topless tease at the beginning and seems to be the romantic interest for the missionary character? *She* should have been the female lead in this thing.
The trailer just makes me wish even more that we were getting a straight adaptation of the Tim Powers novel (incidentally, a huge inspiration for the Monkey Island games) instead of this weird chimera which looks to have cherry-picked some superficial plot elements and characters and none of the spirit.

Which is about what I feared and expected.
I'd be pretty happy if I never had to see another Latina-Woman-is-Upset-So-She-Talks-Very-Fast-in-Spanish scene ever again.

Gemma Ward.

I'm baffled by this reaction. I understand liking the character(s), and hoping this one is more CotBP than AWE. I understand being excited about more Barbossa and about Ian McShane being in it. But thinking what we're seeing looks "fun?" Do not get that at all.

I'm not knocking those who do; I'm honestly baffled a trailer that's primarily people walking in different environments generates excitement. stelios' reaction seems really spot on: this looks entirely generic and constructed out used and well known parts.
