Good for him for having the self-awareness and self-respect to do so.
But...

He's already visited this type of thing with ZATHURA. This sounds like NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 3.

Am I being super-dense here or is this essenially an in-house move?

It seems that he's using the good credit he has left with Marvel after Iron Man 2 to trade up into a possibly lucrative franchise with the parent company that doesn't come with the creative restraints of a shared universe with several other blockbuster projects.

That seemed genuine, I hope it was. I'm a huge supporter of what Marvel is trying to do, but all the various rumblings are a bit disappointing.

I can see why he would want to try something, Iron Man won't be the same without him but I'm glad he's going out on a high.

Exactly. If he needs to walk away from IM3 to hold on to some artistic integrity, fine. But MAGIC KINGDOM doesn't exactly sound like something that's going to let his creative energies go unleashed.

This is good news. IM2 was a bit of a mess, saved by the actors involved, so a new director may take it back to the smarts of the original.

Of course we could get a Batman Forever stuation, where the 2nd sequel is so bad it makes what came before look golden...

For this comparison to work, Iron Man 2 would have to be a much, much stronger film. Batman Returns is easily the most thematically coherent film of all the modern Batman films. (Iron Man 2, weirdly, explores almost the exact same themes and ideas as Batman Returns with an almost identical cast of characters. So, there is a comparison to be made there, but it's a highly unfavorable one for the Iron Man series.)

Well, now I want to see Mickey Rourke as Penguin!

Iron Man II is a high? From Pitofs Catwoman's perspective, yeah, but from Iron Man's?

I'm not interested in Night at the Magic Kingdom co-starring "Captain" Jack Sparrow as a living Pirate of the Caribbean and Brendan Fraser as that guy keeping up with Mickey and Cinderella.

The HeroComplex article quotes Favreau saying it's a different approach than Night or Who framed Roger Rabbit? I find hard to believe it if he is touching Disney most beloved properties...

Perhaps the beloved properties feast upon the flesh of the living. . . .

That's right! Stay positive. Maybe it'll be more like Waxwork than Night at the Museum.

Also quoted from HeroComplex:

(The film also will have to take a step or two away from Epic Mickey, the high-profile video game that just hit stores and presents a quest that plays out across a dark alternate counterpart version of Disneyland.)

Oh my God, a movie about the "Magic Kingdom" ... !?!?!?

And Haunted Mansion with del Toro, didn't they already try this movie???

Horrible stuff, and definitely a step down. Way down.
Oh man, I thought the Magic Kingdom in the title was from the Terry Brooks series. This is a movie about Disneyland? I wonder if the Terry Brooks series has ever been put to film?

Let's hope it never is...or that the filmmakers pull a RED OCTOBER on it and somehow shape a worthy film out of some really awful prose and plotting.
Yeah, it's probably been over 20 years since I read one. I don't really remember it, I was just curious.

I think those books could be turned into a watchable made for tv mini-series for the Hallmark or SyFy channel... with low expectations. But Brooks was one of my gateways to fantasy lit, so I'm a tad biased.

I thought in leaving Marvel he wanted to go in a more interesting direction? This Disney thing sounds underwhelming as fuck.

I think he's a fine gateway author for the young, but with some exceptions, he's at best workmanlike and really, really derivative. SCIONS OF SHANARRA raised my hopes, but those were quickly and cruely smashed with the rest of the series.

Wait, what? The rides to come life?

Are they going to pay out to use Indiana Jones and Jack Sparrow? Or is the fucking train from Thunder Mountain Railroad going to come to life and start crackin' wise via a recognizable celebrity voice?

When the dust settles on the superhero decade, I think we'll find that Favreau and Christopher Nolan defined it, for better or worse...
Really gotta disagree with this. I think it was Nolan and Brian Singer who defined superhero movies this decade. I like the Iron Man movies fine, but they're following the Singer template.

Oddly, I wouldn't say Raimi's Spider-man movies had more than a passing influence on any others. Am I way off about that? I can't think of another superhero movie that really made me think "Oh, this is definitely following Raimi", as opposed to Singer or Nolan. Except the way they turned Dr. Doom into a boring retread of the Green Goblin in the first Fantastic Four.

I'm only disappointed by this news because *I* had an idea for a "Magic Kingdom" movie. Booo!
At first I liked this idea of the Magic Kingdom but after some time thinking about it I think its a huge mistake.

Creatively speaking you're making Night At The Museum with Disney characters no matter what you try to paint this as. Favreau is not Shawn Levy.

That being said I despair at the drop in quality between Iron Man and its lesser sequel. Where was the character moment for Tony Stark in part 2 like the moment in that cave in Afghanistan where his friend is dying and tells him not to waste his life?

Kingdom seems like a cash grab for Favreau and frankly I thought more of the man.

Marvel and Favreau can do better I hope they do in the future.
