Bravo on the review. Great stuff.

Inception is important and definitely one of the best of the year and decade. Many of the original thoughts on the film have lasted and like Renn says, it is genuinely great and will hold up long-term.

Mal being weak and slightly damaging to the effectiveness of a catalyst/antagonist works well for me as being the slight flaw that makes a truly great work excellent. The cast is superb and characters from Saito to Eames to Dom Cobb are very enjoyable and entertaining. The weaknesses do make sense in context and it makes the small yet epic and beautiful story all the better for it.

The non-linear and MEMENTO DVD-like features sound like fun. The challenging and engaging nature of the film gives us a lot of avenues for entertainment. That slice of cake sounds like good eats too and hopefully more discerning explanations and technical overviews will surface over time.

I absolutely loved this film, familiar structure and all. It was a breathtaking and moving experience to see this in an IMAX theater and I hope more people got to do the same. To me, INCEPTION is a perfect movie at its core. Small flaws just add to that. It’s perfect. Great review.

You know what I'm looking forward to in the New Year? Fewer articles and posts about Inception. It's nice and all but seriously, guys, there are better movies out there. Maybe not this year. From the U.S. But this has to stop at some point right? Like Watchmen?

ETA: I'm sorry to voice my disinterest so bluntly, but this film has taken on way to much hyperbole and weight as the months have gone on. Seriously, this is not the be all end all of technical achievement nor is it the deep rooted probing look into the human soul that some folks seem to think it is. It is well made but ultimately has all the depth of a Escher print hanging on a undergraduate's dorm room. I bit my tounge for most of the year over this film so forgive me for expressing my disgust with the praise this "masterpiece" has received from people who should know better. I've spent every day putting up with this blockbuster making its way into far too many conversations. Moratorium time. Por favor.

We reviewed the DVD. Jesus. It's not like we're hit whoring. It's a DVD review.

Get the fuck out of here.

"How dare a movie site talk a lot about a movie that was a great success both artistically and financially?"

Are you serious?
Well, I'm not the one who hit whored the film anyway.
No one said anything about hit whoring. I'm disagreeing with the assessment of the film in question. I think it is a hollow piece of pretentious Hollywood action drivel with poor writing and bad performances from most of the cast. It has gotten way too much praise from way too many people. Not just here. Everywhere. And I decided to say I'm sick of Inception here. On this thread. Trust me guys. You'll look back and say "Yeah...maybe that WAS overpraised a touch." Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But one day. And soon.

Well written review(s). I always enjoy the writing here even when I don't care for the film being written about.

ETA: And there's nothing wrong with writing a Blu Ray review for a popular film. But the universal praise is getting a might bit old. We get it. You liked it then and you like it now from the great perspective of 5 months. Let us know what you think of this flick in 5 years.

If this site needs less of something, it's praise of movies it finds to be excellent. TOO PREDICTABLE.

I got to say I can understand your perspective Peter Judson, understand but don't agree. I loved this film - I love Mal being flawed because in my take on it, she is just Cobb's interpretation of her - so it will be flawed. I know that I will keep coming back to this film because not only do I enjoy the hell out of it - but the end resonated with events in my life, in terms of accepting a reality which makes you happy which may not necassarily be true, because the alternative is too painful and life is too short - I don't want to end up an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone.

Heck even at the end of the film, Cobb acknowledges that Mal is flawed. She then snaps.

More Peter Judson is never a bad thing. And this site did a smart, thoughtful, extended series of articles asking viewers to look at their sacred cows from another point of view. There's no harm in it here.

And no film is immune from burnout. No need to dogpile.

Thanks Phil. But I think I could have made my point in a way that wouldn't have seemed so...dickish? I do feel this flick is getting far too much priase and it will reap the whirlwind as a result. And this praise is certainly not exclusive to CHUD. Lots of people heap laurels on this puppy. And they may be overstating.

What, no one else here has had an off day? But yeah, maybe focus in the post release thread.

A great idea. And I really am sorry if I pissed off Nick or Renn. I admire their skills as critics and meant no disrespect.

It's cool! You're not hated sir.

Oooh, I love it when you guys refer back to your earlier impressions of a film. Great reading!

Rewatching this, I still tend to marvel in how good it is. The film is the perfect marriage of big Hollywood spectacle with a healthy dose of auteurist obsession. And not to pick on the guy but Judson's criticisms only really land punches about half the time if that. ("poor writing and bad performances"? I'm not sure it's enough to just say you didn't like it; I'd like to see people get specific as to what wasn't working for them. Saves anyone the hassle of calling them out for trolling.)

One nitpick: Why is it that the zero gravity only goes one dream deep? If the dreamers in the first dream are feeling the kick, then shouldn't they feel it in the second dream and so on to diminishing degrees as well?

That nitpick was brought up in the discussion thread for the film here:

From there, a few of us tried to make some sense of it.
