Somehow, for how good a year it's been, I find both lists kinda boring and safe. I figured Kanye would be number two, but LCD Soundsystem and Deerhunter are way too high. Don't get me wrong, they made good albums, but This Is Happening is no Sound of Silver and Halcyon Digest is no Microcastle. I still don't get their infatuation with Sleigh Bells (ugh) and Beach House (zzzzzzzzz) and while I like that they defend Vampire Weekend from music snobs who think they're the Antichrist for some reason, that record is a "good not great" kinda thing for me.

Mostly, I'm pissed that Janelle Monae didn't even crack the top ten. That's bullshit.

The song list is okay, but again, some really odd choices here and there and the placement seems random. I like that Ariel Pink song okay, but song of the year? And even the Kanye songs they picked are not my favorites from the album, and Runaway's coda totally overstays it's welcome. In the very list, that should be switched with power.

Much love for Pitchfork still, but kind of a blah, safe and boring list if you ask me.

This is how I've felt about Pitchfork lists for a while. Last year, absolutely everybody knew, as early as January (!), that My Girls was going to be #1, no matter what. And, while I personally love the song, Round and Round said "P4K Song of the Year" the day it was revealed as a preview for the upcoming (yet still somewhat far away) Ariel Pink album, which, by the way, much as I enjoyed it, is not top 10 material as a whole, despite some incredible tracks. Janelle could easily take its spot.

Thing with Pitchfork is they are growing incredibly transparent since the music blogosphere got organized enough that most new bands/projects break out there before they get featured in pitchfork. I'm of the opiniong that, if there's some use to the concept of year end list, is as conversation starters regarding the state of music (which would involve some level of controversy) or as ways to highlight stuff people might've missed. Hopefully a mixture of both. A list like this one seems mostly about backpatting itself and by extension the magazine, while throwing under the rug horses they backed that petered out (sorry Owen Pallett, best new music doesn't even get you honorably mentioned).

Yeah, both lists werent very exciting. A lot of their choices seemed kinda safe to me as well. Really glad to see Sufjan Stevens crack the top 25 though.

The National is 20-fucking-8?

Fuck Pitchfork so very much.

I am happy to see Titus Andronicus crack the top ten.

My problem with everyone calling Kanye's album the best of the year is summed up in Pitchfork's little blurb about the album. It's a paragraph about how crazy Kanye's year has been and how insane he is and his personal life is a mess, but he made an album so hooray, he's a genius. It's a really good album, maybe even great, but as far as people claiming it's the best of the year? It seems every critique of it blends down to Kanye is an insufferable asshole but he made a really good record so he gets extra points. Judge the album, not the artist.

Please someone tell me I'm just blind and missed Broken Social Scene's Forgiveness Rock Record on there? :/

I really like this Beach House album.

Any list that thinks that Cee-Lo's "Fuck You" wasn't the biggest song of the year is developmentally fucking retarded. However, considering how "cooler-than-thou" P4K is, I'm surprised it made the list at all. Then again, I don't know how the song sounds through four scarves, girls jeans, and with novelty glasses on in mom's basement.

It's not a list about the biggest songs of the year. It's the best songs of the year. And everyone always talk about how Pitchfork is "coller than thou" but they have plenty of pop music on both of their lists, and they have for years. Even though I don't agree with a lot of what's on the list (mostly dealing with placement) I never understand where people are coming from with this oppinion. I suspect it's along the lines of "they don't agree with me about everything and they have bands I haven't heard from, therefore they must be wrong and think they're better then me."

Was "Fuck You" the biggest song of the year? Fuck you, year.

Big Boi! Respect.

Also, mother-fuck Kanye West. Dude is a fucking hack and I will carry that grumpy old-man opinion to my death bed! You can't sell me on his "genius," youth of America! You can't!
