The New Site is calling round 2 of volunteers

The first round of responses has been overwhelming. Nick and I are stunned. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Here's round two:

I need volunteers who can make a 15-20 hour commitment over the next three weeks to help us to create a contact database for the following market sectors: video games, tech gadgets, fashion, wine, beer, liquor, and automobiles.

Reply to andrea@chud.com, subject line: VOLUNTEER.

Please answer the following:
1. Do you have Excel or a comparable spreadsheet program?
2. Tell me which area from the above list you are most comfortable covering.

Trust me, Nick and I will be sure any who volunteer are the first on our list to be hooked the hell up with swag when we get the site running. Thanks in advance.

What exactly is a contact database? Potential advertisers? Potential shopping destinations? Does my asking those questions disqualify me from helping? Cuz I wouldn't mind in on some beer, liquor and car schwag.

that was my question as well, Tzu.

I need people to create lists of press and marketing contacts for people that manufacture these products.

You need a Press NOC List? Good luck at keeping that updated.

How about some info on the new site in between the pleas for volunteers? A name, anything? How much effort do you expect people to put forth based on blind faith and the promise of "something more if things take off"?

Blind faith? Is this your first day? If it is this crew I have the utmost that they can deliver.

Actually, we've gotten great response. Expected? None. Appreciated responses? Oh yeah.

Volunteers volunteer because they want to.

We cannot announce the site yet because the investor has not given us a green light. It's as simple as that.

Does this assignment require investigative talent, or is it more along the lines of data entry? I'm very good at data entry, but not knowing a lot about industries could possibly leave you looking for help elsewhere.

I have OpenOffice calc, which saves in Excel and many other document formats. I have extensive undergrad academic experience with both Excel and OpenOffice.

My favorite subjects are tech gadgets. I haven't played a modern video game in a long time, but this would probably be my second most comfortable area in the list you posted.

I'm tentatively interested in contributing to this new project in some way. Let me know you feel I can help.

This was my question as well. Although given the right parameters, I could probably track down contact information with the best of 'em, though I have little to no industry-specific insight about what would be useful and what would not.

ETA: Ah, I see your response now. I worked with a non-profit for about a year, and all they do (besides non-profit work) is create and maintain databases. How many contacts are y'all hoping to gather?

It's more grunt work.

I can do grunt work. I have a PhD, the pinnacle of academic paper-training / grunt work.

Way to sell it!

Yeah. It's not erection-inducing work. One of those... we really need the help if you wanna be able to say you shoveled coal in the belly of a giant ship named _____.com at one point.

When I was in the job market, this tool was very valuable...
http://www.onesource.com/business-information.aspx

Requires an account (we had free access through the agency for a limited time), but there appears to be a free trial. You can look up any company, get contact info, and spit out spreadsheets and lists.

Hopefully someone volunteering (or CHUD in general) could make use of it. Good luck!

All,

Thank you and hang with me to get back to you. I'm buried right now and digging my way out.

Darkmite... looks promising. Thankyou.

No problem. I know it's mysterious at first glance, but it really was an invaluable tool for me.
