Need Racecar Theme Ideas

My wife, some friends of mine and I do some amateur endurance racing. I realize that I just strung three words together there that will make most of your eyes glaze over. Amateur. Endurance. Racing. Basically, we have to take a sub $500 used POS and turn it into a racing car without spending much money. We then run the cars in 14-24 hour long races. It really is huge fun. Anyway, the organizers encourage the teams to develop themes and dress the cars up a bit for fun. We’ve run four races with our 1991 Escort and our themes have ranged from totally lame (Starsky and Hutch) to half way reasonable (NASA/Space Shuttle). We are getting a new car, a Mazda MX-3, and we are trying to come up with a good theme for the new car. As there are some creative people around here I figured I would see if you guys have any good ideas.

Some guidelines are needed. We are not rich. I can’t turn the car into a working model of Nakatomi Plaza. We can’t drag anything behind the car. We can’t have things fall off the car. The team will dress up in theme specific clothes for part of the race. Most of the obvious stuff has been done. Mad Max, Star Wars, zombies, Back to the Future and all that.

My car theme idea?

Your car is so fast it travels phasing in and out of our dimension as you race. So you figure out which track you'll be racing on, and then paint your car in such a way that it appears to not be there at all. Match the paint of your car exactly to the surface of the track. This way your car appears to vanish into thin air. Use non reflective paint so that your car is very difficult to see and the other drivers, in the heat of the moment, might lose track of you which would provide you with an opening to win/endure

The principal behind this image, but on a race car (btw that image is done with only street paint, it's not photoshop. So I think you could do something similar for a car and use perspective and clever painting to make it disappear)

EDIT: And make your car the subject of mystery and speculation. Whenever you have it out before the race, make sure that alot of unrelated but complex looking scientific equipment is close by. Cover it in special reflective tarps to keep out solar radiation, ETC. Have a friend stand close by with some sort of high tech instrument, taking measurements of the air around the car. Psych the other racers out

Kate, the car needs to be visible enough to be seen. Having a a 1998 Crown Vic plow through us would not be fun at all. I like scientists hanging around idea though. Someone has tried to get that see through effect, but they only made it part way.

Darkmites, Death Race has been done. True that Corman didn't need much budget.

Fair enough, that did occur to me. I figured that it would be a trade off. Some cars might lose track of you, risking an accident.. or they could lose track and give you your opening for victory. Still though, you're probably right, safety first and all that!

f86sabre...you're doing 24Hrs of Lemons?! Hell yeah! I've always wanted to do that. I always see the pictures on Jalopnik and it looks hilariously fun!

Yup, we run LeMons. We're planning on doing a couple of races in 2011. I would really like to run a full 24 hour race this year. It is massive fun, but a bit spendy.

OK, a little self serving bump.  Last chance for stupid race car theme ideas.  My teammate wants to go with a mock hybrid and something to do with hamsters in the tailpipe.  Kind of scary.
