Not such a horrible year, says the jerk.

Nice seeing The American love, a movie I only bothered with because of Renn's review, and was blown away. Considering that our tastes rarely align, I was surprised how much I agreed with your list this year. Well, other than The Social Network, but I'm pretty much a lonely fellow when it comes to that one.
I fully understand it being someone's #1 or #40 of the year.
Solid list. Makes me want to watch The American now. I was curious, but kept away. Looking forward to it hitting video.

Glad you included The Ghost Writer, but I think it should be higher. Certainly above The Town, which I enjoyed, but don't find "best of" material.
Great list, but I was most happy to see Winter's Bone, The American, and Monsters.
Good stuff. Sadly, I still need to catch half of them. Saw True Grit and Black Swan today, at least.
Yeah, I can't say I disagree with any of the entries I managed to watch this year.
Great to see Ghost Writer included. Most surprising film of the year, felt very much like a 70's throwback.
I watched Ghost Writer not once but TWICE to and from New York on a plane. It's really pretty great. Good pick Nick.

A friend of mine was commenting that a bunch of top ten lists were really similar this year. I personally think that's good.
Great list, and I really can't argue with any of the included films. I need to see more of them (missed SOCIAL at the theaters; waiting for BLACK SWAN to open near here, etc.). What's interesting for me about the list is that, despite it feeling like an off year, the list shows differently. 2010 might actually have been a stronger year than I thought - there were certainly some really great movies released this year, and many of them broke away from many Hollywood conventions (or subverted them nicely).

Two quick notes because, hey, it's my post:

THE AMERICAN: I will likely end up buying this because it's a great flick and I'm pretty gay for Clooney, but that ending. Nearly ruins the flick for me. Maybe it'll get better on repeat viewings. Violante Placido will certainly not get worse for repeat viewings, that's for sure.

SCOTT PILGRIM: I now know what those who bitched about THE DARK KNIGHT's rabid fans felt like. From people crowing about seeing SP 3+ times in the theater to the seemingly endless splooging about it here...ugh. I know I'm the tiny minority here, and I understand from a technical and structural standpoint why the film is getting accolades, but it simply didn't hit me and felt fairly hollow, actually. I know, I know.

This list has me needing to see:

The Town -- 127 Hours -- Winter's Bone
A Prophet -- The American -- Monsters
The Fighter -- Exit Through The Gift Shop
(and especially now) The King's Speech

Finally saw The Ghost Writer. Personal performance to savor: Eli Wallach (coolest 95 year old island hermit ever) He participated the hell out of that role!

Great selection and well representing of a damn good year of films.

Awesome list Nick. Definitely needing to see The Town, 127 Hours, Winter's Bone, The Fighter, Exit Through The Gift Shop (on Netflix streaming right now), and The King's Speech.

Wow. Surprised to see Social Network at #1. For me it's only slid down, although it's still an amazing film and one of the best of the year for me.

All in all though, can't say I quibble too much with your list, Nick.

I saw several on this list, yet still need to several more. Of those I've seen, they're also my favorites of 2010, outside of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I finally got around to seeing that flick last week and for me, it did not live up to the hype. And I think it officially soured me on Michael Cera. I just don't understand his appeal. If I want a nervous, uncomfortable performance, I'll choose Jesse Eisenberg over him any day. That being said, I laughed heartily at your pull quote for The American. I can't wait to see that film again when it hits home video next week.

Wow, our lists align greatly this year, especially the #1. Always love the CHUD pull quotes on these, btw. Great stuff I'd love to see on a commercial or poster.
Yeah the pull quotes are great. In fact the whole list is both a delight and a slap across my face to make me see more of these movies that have slipped by me so far.

Since it's been a crazy year for me and I haven't gotten out to the theaters to see many "adult" films besides INCEPTION, consider my Netflix queue that much fatter. Or maybe AMC will do another Best Film Nom marathon during Oscar season...

I love these lists.

Did they do it last year? It seems impossible with 10 nominees.

Not sure. I was laid off and scrambling for freelance.

Impossible? Not if they stretch it across a Sat & Sun. And provide piss buckets.

Interesting to read what Nick said about Kim Cattrall's British accent; as that's not the only place I've read that comment. She was born in the UK. Admittedly she left at 3 months of age but came back from about ages 11 to 16 if I worked that out correctly.

I wonder if that means she never picked up a UK accent and her attempts are hopelessly fake or she did and it's just naturally annoying to some people?

I believe they did it on two consecutive Saturdays, five films each.
