2009: Cinema Revisited

We're a year removed from the end of 2009. I often hear of the golden years of films, such as 1939, 2007, 1999, 1967, every year in the 70s etc. However, looking back on the year of 2009 I have to say that I see a pretty impressive line-up. It's especially prevalent in a year such as 2010 where there has been some great films, but a seemingly lower quantity of movies that can be viewed as good to great. Let's look at some of the films of 2009.

Dramas
The Hurt Locker, A Serious Man, Inglourious Basterds, Crazy Heart, Moon, A Single Man, Away We Go, Antichrist, Bronson, Bright Star, The Informant, Big Fan, Up In the Air, Where The Wild Things Are

Comedies
The Hangover, In The Loop, Observe and Report, I Love You Man, Zombieland, Land of the Lost, Adventureland, Funny People, World's Greatest Dad

Animation
UP, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Genre Stuff
Taken, District 9, Avatar, The Brothers Bloom, Drag Me To Hell, Star Trek, Sherlock Holmes, Watchmen, Orphan, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Crank: High Voltage

These films all seem to be good to great, or at the very least incredibly interesting. The fact that all of them came out in the same year makes me think that perhaps 2009 is a year that will be more appreciated with time. What do you think? Was 2009 a year that will be remebered as great? Or is just not good enough?

Foreign Films: The Headless Woman, Revanche (a film that this crowd would love if they'd just watch it), Lorna's Silence, Summer Hours, 35 Shots of Rum, Home

Indies: Afterschool, Julia, Humpday, Goodbye Solo

As far as animation you can't forget Mary and Max.

EDIT: It was 2008 that was the off year. I remember thinking that Slumdog Millionaire deserved Best Picture, and how depressed that made me.

09 was a great year, but 07 thoroughly spoilt us. When one year gives so many outright masterpieces we will forever pointlessly pit against each other (Zodiac vs Jesse James, NCFOM vs TWBB, etc), it gets a bit hard to praise a great year for just being great or recognize it as such at the moment, even if that year had the revenge of the giant face.

Forgot Thirst and The White Ribbon on my list of really good foreign films. I just dug up the list of all the films I liked from '09. I was thirty deep before I got to stuff like Drag Me To Hell and Zombieland. Then at least a dozen flawed, but very worthwhile films followed.

SHERLOCK HOLMES doesn't deserve to be on that list.
