The Shaw Bros. Appreciation Thread

Before Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan there was the Shaw Bros., their output dominated the sixties and seventies and they produced such an astonishing volume of films during their reign, all up I think it was 800 films, although they mostly produced kung fu films, they produced comedies, musicals, fantasy as well.

I've been watching alot of Shaw Bros. films lately, mainly the wu xia pian films which are incredibly fun. I do love the films of Chu Yuan, the set's built for his films are incredible, elegant and opulent, unlike Chang Cheh, Yuan's films have a certain grace, even though the plots are kind of crazy.

I think Chu Yuan tends to get overlooked in favor of Chang Cheh, which isn't surprising as Cheh is the more influential filmmaker, I'm not a huge fan of Cheh, the only film I love to watch from Chang Cheh is Vengeance which is a badass revenge film, everything else is kind of hit and miss.

Consider this the ultimate thread to discuss all things Shaw brothersy.

NathanW, I...Love the films of, The Shaw Brothers. David Chiang, is clearly, my favorite SB martial artist, and my fave SB, film is...The Shaolin Handlock! I used to watch, Fox 5's Kung Fu Theater every, saturday morning! A couple of years ago...Kung Fu HD, disappeared from Cablevision, and that was sad to see. Shaw Bros films in HD, was just...Glorious. Sure, they only aired, 4 a day, but that meant you could rewatch, all or parts of your favorites.

Horror, too! That's what I love them most for anyway, the crazy shit like Seeding of a Ghost, Killer Snakes, their giallo Corpse Mania, etc.

Their pure chop socky stuff I respect and recognize the importance of, but Hong Kong hadn't perfected action yet, and it's the stuff that came just after their heyday that I really love.
