Matt Damon says Soderbergh's directing days are numbered.

Not good. As someone who watched and even liked The Girlfriend Experience this is not good at all. No sir.

The "I'm not a storyteller" excuse is complete bullshit. Telling the story might not be what interests him the most, but that doesn't mean he isn't doing it.

Hope he doesn't go through with it, because he's still one of my favorite modern directors.

I won't lose too much sleep if either Soderbergh or Kevin Smith decide to call it a day behind the camera. Tarantino's the one who worries me. Despite noises about retirement he's made to the press, that guy better be making movies until either he dies or I do.

So he's a hipster version of George Lucas?

I think Soderbergh's full of shit. He always has been kind of an elitist "I'm above film" but then goes about and assembles all star casts for stuff like Ocean's 11 and Erin Brockovich. Malick has the currency of his convictions at least. Does anyone see Terrance making something as audience friendly or accessible as the Ocean's movies or Brockovich?

Good for him. And to those calling his return later in life because of a paycheck can go fuck themselves. In the past, Soderbergh has been very forthcoming about the realities of bank balance versus career decisions, and it does not run his life or his decision making. When he had his "crisis" before the triple home run of Out Of Sight, Erin Brockovich and Traffic, he was about to quit and make $1 million dollar indies for the rest of his life (or until he quit), and consolidate his lifestyle to accommodate the smaller salaries. Soderbergh doesn't give a fuck about money. His artistic choices more than speak of a man who does not care, and does not fuck around about big decisions like this. He's not Brett Ratner.

You're kidding right? Soderbergh is a student of film...ALL FILM...even the Oceans movies are legitimate pieces of cinema, and need skill to be made well, plus he's stated he thought they'd be fun to make...look at Ocean's 12 for God sake...that is not the movie of a guy looking for a paycheck. And I don't think he's an elitist snob...have you seen interviews with the guy? He's one of the most self depreciating people in the business. He was even embarrassed when Sex Lies won Cannes over Do The Right thing, because he thought it was just a "white plight" movie and that Lee's film was a genuine masterpiece.

Soderberg's a favorite. It'd be a shame to see him go.

I'm not knocking his skill or talent I'm knocking his attitude towards film. And he's ALWAYS been that way. Has nothing to do with this paycheck bullshit you're trying to spin out of what I said. His experimental stuff post-Sex were interesting failures and he'd be resigned to the indie scrap heap if it wasn't for his more commercial fare that began with Out of Sight that showed how talented he was as a filmmaker and not just a one hit indie wonder.

And yes his attitude about 'The FORM! I want to paint because I'm not a storyteller" reeks of elitism. And Do The Right Thing is a superior film to SL&V. What should we give Steve for acknowledging this? Maybe a cookie but not the plain, round populist cookie with good old fashioned chocolate chips. Maybe an ironic Fig Newton with a lime green penis on it by Keith Haring.

I don't follow your point...you said he thinks he's above film. I don't see where you're getting that. He makes all kinds of movies. Where are you getting your hypothesis?

And don't forget, Out Of Sight bombed, and he made The Limey between that and Eric Brockovich. He's always been experimental, even with his commercial films, it's what made them work.

I see it as self depreciation. So the guy wants to paint because he thinks he's an artisan rather than storyteller. Again, I don't follow your conclusion here. Soderbergh is very cerebral...cerebral people can come off as elitists to people who only look at them superficially. It's why many people seem like snobs, when they're merely nervous or shy. You have to look past what they're actually saying.

I was using that to back my argument against him being an elitist. An elitist wouldn't give a shit about Do The Right Thing losing to their film. And Soderbergh himself doesn't even like Sex Lies now, he's said this. The dude is the furthest you can get from elitism.

Are we being negative towards fucking Soderbergh now? Come on.

And I really don't get ascribing elitism to him. He said he was interested in film for reasons other than storytelling. Which, if you watch his smaller, more personal stuff is easily apparent. And not even that. Look at what he did with Ocean's 12. If he feels he doesn't have anything else he wants to do he should of course stop. That's not elitism, that's honesty.

The way The Informant! was pretty much ignored last year was pretty criminal, if you ask me. Probably the closest we'll ever get to a Schizopolis follow up.

I like Soderbergh a lot but he's already made more films than many directors do in a lifetime. I think I'd rather see him quit and pursue something else if the alternative is him miserably cranking stuff out when his heart openly isn't in it.
