AND THE NAME OF OUR NEW SITE IS...

Yep, that's the name of it and what its concept is.

Good luck. Hell of a domain name.

I had no idea Yoda and Wall-E were dating, let alone that they had a baby. Mazel Tov.

ETA: Very excited, by the way, though according to the demographics I have a scant few years left.
This is kinda what I suspected. I'm excited to waste hours and hours of time with this site. Congrats...um, guys.

If it doesn't make a mint off SEO alone, it'll be a damn shame.

Also lol gayjoke because someone's gonna do it.
Seems like there's an awful lot of effort being spent explaining that the name doesn't mean what a first glance would think it means, which says to me that maybe it's not the best name in the world.
I like, I like. I'll be checking it out once it's unleashed. Great to hear it's also got a mobile app planned for it too.
Cool Nick, best of luck with the new site. I'm sure it's going to be fun to check out.

Like the little robot guy too.
ROBUTS!

I like the sound of this new place!

I have a question though. Since you're trying to distinguish it from other "men's sites," which irk me as well, and be inclusive to both genders, will you include content that is commonly seen as feminine?

I hope the site takes off, and all of you are rewarded for your hard work.

I disagree. Sometimes a simple, explanatory name is the way to go, but this aspiring to be a cultural site. Livejournal and Myspace are names that tell you what to expect, but I don't go to Cracked to see pictures of damaged items, CHUD to read about a single obscure film, or Bad Ass Digest to see pictures of asses or donkeys.

I got a glimpse (just a glimpse) and it's beautiful.

Finally a website for young men.
Can. Not. Wait.

The very best of luck for the launch.
I'm a 41 year-old guy with no interest in cigars, sex toys or men's sites. How does this affect me, or more importantly how does it affect my favorite movie site CHUD.com?
when I see "GUY" I always think of that dirty anime VHS cover for GUY: Double Target by ADVision.
Not sure I need to be "mentored" by a website...but this sounds pretty cool. I really do hope it stays away from typical men's site bullshit. Excited about the all-inclusive possibilities.

Also, what's up with the chair? Prefer the robot!
It sounds like the site will be pretty community-centric. Which I'm excited for because, much like CHUD, the articles are a jumping off point for great discussions here in the forums. It'll be fun to discuss beers, wines, women and other man things with a lot of the folks here.

It's a clever logo. A man's armchair is his throne -- and the chair's shadow is a speech bubble. The robot doesn't do much for me, actually.
Awesome, another site to spend too much time on! Looking forward to it.
Holy shit, this actually sounds like an even bigger deal than I figured. Nice! There actually AREN'T that many websites for "guys" that don't orbit around pictures of "hotties of the moment" or whatever, so if this leans more towards something like a broader and more commercial A.V. Club or Esquire, I'm in! Good luck to the entire crew, it's sounds genuinely cool.

Good question. When you start a website you have to see what the audience responds to. Your first year or so, you put stuff out there and see what gets chewed on. So far, no lipsticks or high heels or jogging strollers. You can write about cigars and beer and sports (typical male things) and spin it so it's about how a man consumes these things or how these things are used to underscore manliness. Or you can simply write about the vice or hobby (we cover art, design, books, dining, music... and on and on as well) and make them sound interesting and accessible in and of themselves, gender be damned. There are so many things in life that you enjoy without your private parts, you know?

I hate quoting an age range. That is geared more toward marketing firms asking for a target demographic. You have to cut it somewhere. I joke all the time that "what, are you dead after forty then?!" Because, hell no, no one is. More importantly, we are writing for an audience that is in the collecting and adoption phase in life. The sex toy coverage (I'm the main editor in our "sextion!") is tongue in cheek. I'm hoping you will find a section of Guy.com that makes you feel at home when you visit.

We cover: sports, art and design, movies, books, comics and graphic novels, gaming, music, alcohol, tobacco, food and dining, cars and all things that roll, electronics and gadgets, history, sex and sexuality, and cultural critique and humor.

As far as mentoring, some of the best vices and good things in life are gained because someone that knows more about them shares them with us and takes time to teach us how to enjoy them. I've seen it happen in real life as I started to enjoy wine, port, cigars, opera, music, and better food just to name a few. What you were reading in the main article is our attempt to conceptualize what guy.com will sound like and do. The concept and the actual site are two different entities. On the actual site, we're not going to tell people "we will mentor you, you imbecile" because our readership is not going to be dumb. We imagine them already savvy and hungry for more.

Yes! The community is going to be amazing! You nailed what works so well about CHUD, and we are hoping that an article about bacon cured bourbon or the newest graphic novel will get people talking and discussing and trading ideas and suggestions.

Well, at least there'll be a focus.

Unified mission and tone. Focus is broad.

Also, negativity can waste someone's life.
Not negativity, honesty. To me, that's just too much of a swath to cut. It'll make it hard to have an identity. And it'll be tough pulling people in from the various sites where they already get all of that. Jack of all trades and master of none, so to speak.

Again, this is not wishing you ill or hoping for failure, just an honest opinion.
GUY.com is not aiming for Chewers. I think Chewers can dig it. Hell, Chewers don't even seem to enjoy CHUD most of the time.

This is for a much broader demo, and when you see the look and feel you'll get it. Or you won't.

But I have gotten a real negative vibe from you.
I like you guys. I don't want to see things you do fail. And I have reservations about this. If that makes me negative, so be it.

LOL Sebastian is older than me!

I think Richard's just pointing out the uphill climb, but then again what the fuck isn't? Good luck, guys. I hope shit works out for this new site, new CHUD, all dat.
Bunch of silly Geese. Its just a website. Might be fun, might not be fun. But I think, attempting to do it and starting with a broad base is a good place to start, get a feel of the readership and then slowly, phase out the stuff that isn't as popular.

Pretty sure its success or failure is nobody's Business but anyone making it. Don't see why people find that so tricky.

I look forward to it. I'm looking forward to having a online magazine with articles etc, rather than random blog posts like most other sites that cover these things.

Speaking of, will there be anything on GUY.COM for guys who do Botox?
How did you guys manage to score that URL? I would've thought something like that would have been snatched in the old pioneer days the internet.

Good luck on the site, looks like it should be interesting.
No-bullshit, honest goodwill question: Will the new site's broad focus take some of the pressure off of this one? I mean is anything cigar or liquor or game related going to end up there instead?

I've long thought simplifying the focus of chud's main page content would be its saving grace.

It works for _________________ (insert name of almost any single magazine in existence).

I don't see what that has to do with anything? Just because they might be using the same writers doesn't mean they want to attract Chewers. I'm assuming they're able to write about two different subjects at ay given time. There's a buncha shit Warren Ellis writes I never even glance at, because it's not my thing. Weird example, yeah, but you get the gist.

ETA: I just saw that "Bathroom Etiquette" video Nick tweeted, and I'm sorry to say, I laughed my ass off at the guy swiping his finger at the flushing water, and the guy at the end turning the other one around. Not highbrow by any definition of the word, but it worked, which is what matters.

I'm afraid not.
But then I have no idea wtf Renn is trying say here-
Like the rest of GUY.com, the video side will take an unceremonious, informal approach to being informative. We'll always seek to improve the sophistication and beauty of the photography itself, regardless of the seriousness or silliness of the content.

So maybe it's me.

You implied that he is, because he's using writers who write for CHUD.

I explained that that doesn't mean anything, because they would be writing about different subjects. Subjects not covered in CHUD, and subjects most people who read CHUD probably don't give a crap about. And Chewers might love Renn's reviews, but probably would opt out of reading an article about pens written by Renn.

That's a pretty good description of this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YX_gJmD7mhE

That's the video Nick tweeted, and that I talked about in my previous post.
That's not what I meant to imply. I meant it seems misguided to recruit free help from chewers for a site not aimed at chewers.

Not sure what that video is supposed to represent in regards to what Renn wrote. That's an example of beautiful photography? Really? I'll not comment on the premise itself.
I think I need to walk away from this now.
I'd like to think that we're multifaceted. As I work on my article on Sexual Dimorphism for GUY.
Will there be girls in(or out of) bikinis? Because that's one thing the internet is sorely lacking if you ask me.

Best of luck. If the writing is as funny and entertaining as CHUD has been over the years, it should be a success.
I would think that recruiting Chewers would actually be a smart idea, and I'm not saying that simply because I volunteered. If you look at one of Devin's old complaints, we Chewers seem to love talking about everything but movies - food, gossip, video games, etc. It would seem to suggest, following that logic that we would be a good fit to contribute to the new site.
Very interested in this, congratulations and looking fward to get mentored in the ways of guyness.

Nick, I know that you and I are done, professionally, but Richard Dickson's been one of the single most loyal and optimistic Chewers on the boards for almost as long as I have. He's been a punching bag for a lot of folks over the years, myself included, and it never fazed him. I've never seen him get angry, or get personal. In many ways, he's got a lot of qualities that make up an ideal member of this community.

Which is to say if you think he's had a "negative vibe" just because he's voicing concerns in a constructive manner, maybe you really should just nuke the site from orbit and start over with a Home Team who'll never question what you do. Because like guy.com, that's something you've talked about for years.

Oh, look, the bullshit sub-par gangster movie posturing that's like my least favorite thing about you!

Holy shit I was kidding.

What the fuck is it with people who think they know me. Jesus fuck. I went back and reread Poxy's posts and where my comment was from was the stuff in the Steady Leak article and then this. Seems as if he had a hard on for me.

Stop taking this shit so serious.

I'm going to violate THE NEW RULES and say this:

I don't get the reference. But this shit is my livelihood and something I have been doing since 1997. Don't fuck with me. I don't have any time for bullshit from people like you, all that is going on to keep this site on the web.
Jesus, I'm coming up on ten years on this fucking site, and all it takes is a couple of calmly worded posts where I express reservations about the direction of this site and the new one while still wishing you well and I have a hard on for you?
All I said was "But I have gotten a real negative vibe from you.".

It truly is earth-shattering.
I wish you well with the new site. That's all for me in this thread.
