ALEX'S 2010 GAME OF THE YEAR AWARDS

'Twas a good year.

Great list Alex!

I haven't really been gaming much this year and that just served to remind me how many games I need to get to. Though I did pick up Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2 a few weeks back as an early christmas present to myself and I agree, both games are just phenomenal in every way (though I disagree with you on the plot of RDR, I think it's one of the most compelling one's Rockstar have ever done). And looking at that list of games for 2011 and realising Diablo III may also get realeased, I'm kinda glad for once, that I'm single. I can already see my social life slowly wasting away...

I'd have put BC2 a bit higher, mostly because it had multiplayer so good it actually managed to keep me playing for a month. And you're right, it's so much better than CODBLOPS it's not even funny.

Alex Riviello, Since you did not play the Wii all year, I recommend...Tatsunoko vs Capcom! Another Worthy Wii game in 2010 is the...Data East Arcade Collection featuring...Bad Dudes Vs Dragon Ninja, and Heavy Barrell! There are, 15 games in total. I also highly recommend...Fist Of The North Star: Ken's Rage, for X Box 360. It is also on the PS3.

I love how in depth this list is. You're a jem, Alex.

Great list, and loved the awards for the "wannabe" games...fantastic job, alex!
Alex Riviello, Does...Marvel Vs Capcom 3, not interest you? That will...Easilly, be my favorite game of, 2011. I played it at...New York Comic Con, and it was...Awesome! I cannot comment on your list though. I have not played...any of the games on it.

I have never enjoyed racing games, and yet I'm seriously considering giving HOT PURSUIT a go.

Nice list, Alex. Play LORDS OF SHADOW when you get a chance. It's great. (And some meaty DLC has just been announced for it.)

No Starcraft: WoL?? Good article, but I found the omission of that game a little curious...
I don't really follow video games at all, but this was a fun list to read. Thanks Alex!

Heavy Rain made it. Bless you, Alex.

My friend bought me Battlefield: Bad Company 2. Glad to hear it's a great game. Looking forward to playing it when I get around to it.
I'll pile on for the love of Battlefield. I have only purchased a few games this year, so I may not be a good indicator, but that's my favorite game of the year.

What I'm wondering is if it has the explodey sensibilities of the Burnout series
post #15 of 22
Yeah, yours and Nick's praise of the game as well as the Criterion connection (I LOVE Burnout Paradise) are making me consider buying the game right now. It's just under 40 bucks on Amazon. Is there anywhere cheaper? And at what point do these games drop to 19.99!? Hahahah

I still have Split Second and Blur that I haven't played for a while... I'm not sure I should jump on NFS: HP so soon.

Great write-up. Gotta agree with the commenter who mentioned Donkey Kong Country Returns. Just played it recently for a good 4 hours, and it's everything I was hoping New Super Mario Bros Wii would be. Very fun. Only complaint is the lack of Classic Controller support, there's a bit too much shaking going on, although it's not as annoying as in NSMBW.
Super Mario Galaxy is probably the only other Wii game worth full price in 2010. Kind of sad.

I'm so damn tempted to get New Vegas. Maybe by the time the Game of the Year Edition comes out in a year or so, all the bugs will be ironed out. Hah.

Thanks! It was supposed to go up earlier and I wish I could have put descriptions of the upcoming games, but they would have likely all been "I DUN LIKED THE LAST ONE THE NEXT WILL BE GOOD"

Yeah, like I said, I played that demo not expecting much and was completely amazed at it. Probably get it after I plow through my backlog (Bayonetta and Civ most of all....)

An oversight!

I knew Trevor would disapprove, but I love the game, melodramatic as it can be. And I hate that it's pretty much certain that I'll pick up a Move just for it at some point.

Donkey Kong Returns intrigues me for sure, but there's so much I'd rather play before it. The first DLC for Fallout is pretty excellent so far! Some gameplay changes and a little bit of stealth. GOTY version will certainly be a bargain.

Also just wanted to say thanks for the kind words, folks. Wish that I could have gotten more reviews and such up this year!
Just gonna jump on the bandwagon... but... WOW!!

What a list, Alex! I'd read most of your reviews over the year, anyway... but this list helped to remind me why I love ME2 and why I should seriously consider buying an XBOX.

Your Red Dead blurb once again made me feel like I totally missed something special.
Yeah Red Dead is a masterpiece, no bones about it.

Actually Codename- wanted to stress I didn't have a problem with the story at all. I just felt the missions could have been streamlined a bit. They all follow a familiar pattern: Look for a mission marker, run over to it and trigger a cutscene with some back and forth dialogue, ride with that character to a job location, shoot a lot of people in the face, ride back to the starting point. Wash, rinse, repeat. It's the story that keeps you going!

It's never too late. It's a fantastic game.

I don't understand the hate for ASSASSIN'S CREED (???), but otherwise this is a good list. Your comments about COD:BO and RDR especially rang true, IMHO. COD:BO made my year end best of list only because I don't play many games. It was a fun diversion for a few days though

Edit: disagree that RDR was too long though. In the age of games that only bother to wrap up all the loose ends in a DLC, RDR's relaxed pace and sprawling story was a welcome relief
