Wes Anderson's "The Sirens of Titan"

This is one of my favorite books, and I've been rereading it over the holiday. For some reason the book plays itself out in my mind like a Wes Anderson film to the point where I want to see it happen. I mean, stop motion Tralfamadorians!

Seriously, you could have Murray as Rumfoord, and that would be close to perfect. I don't know what to do about Malachi, though. Sometimes he's Ben Stiller in my mind's eye, other times he's Christian Bale for some damn reason.

You, sir, are an absolute bugger! I thought this was actually happening until I realised where you'd posted it!

This and Cat's Cradle are the two Vonneguts I'd most like to see on a big screen. Can you imagine Ice 9 with todays FX?

Confession: I haven't read Cat's Cradle. I've been saving it for "the right time." So I know nothing about Ice-9 or how it could look.

But I think that The Life Aquatic proves that Anderson has a good Sirens movie in him, and the story hits a lot of his sweet spots.

It's been a while since I read it but I've a feeling you've got an image in your head of aliens hugging a wall shouting "Hello! Hello!"

If so, yes Anderson would be a great fit!

My choice for Cat's Cradle (which you have to read very soon, by they way) would be Alfonso Cuaron.

The harmoniums say two things to each other (telepathically, as there is no atmosphere): The first is "Here I am!" The second is "So glad you are!"

The parts of the book that I tend to gravitate toward are from the final three or so chapters, with Malachi/Unk's return to Earth and subsequent banishment, and then the time spent on Titan, which is probably the saddest and most beautiful part of the book. I first read it in high school, and I remember crying when I read the part with Malachi being shunned up the ladder to the space ship with a family who hates him, and then crying AGAIN during their cathartic stay on Titan.

But laughing, too.Anderson is really the only filmmaker alive (that I can think of) who really nails that mixture of weird humor and melancholy that Vonnegut does. His movies even have a similar sort of rhythm to a lot of Vonnegut's work. I'd love to see him adapt something by the guy, obviously.

Well you've won me over. I saw Fantastic Mr Fox over the holidays and I really agree with you about that mix of humor and melancholy shared with Vonnegut. Strangely sad and beautiful at times, the lone wolf raising his fist in the air.

Now I'm thinking specifically of the reason for human existence in Sirens, that destroyed me the first time I read it. I can see Anderson bringing that to the screen.

So which Rolling Stones songs will be in it?
