LOTR Movie Discussion 10

Wow, ten full threads. Good work, screwers.
Since we were discussing our favorite moments, I'll chime in:

The painful fight between the wizards. No touching, doors slamming, Christopher Lee being thrown all over the place. GREAT fun.

The Legolas-three-arrows thing. I may be a heterosexual male, but that was the big O. Orgasm central.

The Watcher heaving itself ashore.

A barefoot Galadriel pad-pad-padding down the steps in Lothlorien.

Moria Orc shoot: An arrow bounces off the cliff and right into the camera. Legolas replies with an arrow into the eye of an orc.

The breathtakingly beautiful shot of the glowing treehouses in Lothlorien.

The Frodo/Boromir confrontation. Have found it very disturbing ever since someone at AICN saying it plays like a rape scene.

The final Sam/Frodo scene. The clasping arm, the promise... I wept silently.

And lots more...

Thanks A LOT for that link, AgentOrange. Fantastic...

OK, here's a question:

What the deuce does 'IIRC' mean? I'm seeing it everywhere now and I can't figure it out.

That would be IFHA, or NAFA.

"Good work, screwers"
Did I miss something somewhere? Has "You're Screwing the boards" become so prevelent that we're no longer chewers?

The concept of whatnow? Just attempting to (a)stop the acronyms (get them away!!! ugh) and (b)steer the thread back on track.

...I just noticed your acronyms, you evil bastard...

The National Geographic Behind The Movie DVD is now available on Amazon.

Just to clarify. I had a chance to chat with Peter Jackson face to face on Monday. He's ungodly cool. He clarified a few things for me:

The longer cut of FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING features a total of about 35 minutes of new footage, bringing the running time to just over 3 1/2 hours. It is finished now.

The 3 1/2 minute trailer for THE TWO TOWERS will be added to the theatrical prints during the last few weeks of release, as a way of justifying one last trip to the theater for fans.

Sounds like the extra footage in FELLOWSHIP will be awesome. They're shooting some new Gollum scenes with Sam and Frodo this June, scenes that Fran just wrote while watching Peter edit all the TWO TOWERS Gollum scenes, which is what he's working on at the moment.

They're still shooting miniatures and working on motion capture stuff with Andy Serkis.

I can't even imagine putting this together.

Woohoo! Thank you Moriarty.

Two Towers, definitely. It will pin down the friendship and loyalty sworn to in the first film, there's a...um, no spoilers, huh? Hmm...choose words carefully...

Ah!

It has a..."forest battle" that will be epic.

It will reveal Smeagol, and it will have "Shish-ka-bob" - and it is going to be absolutely harrowing.

Return of the King is such a logistical nightmare that I've no idea how it will come to the screen without losing something. Too much stuff happens at one time in that book, so the narrative will need to either jump all over, or be massively streamlined, or do some...Tarantino-esqe "Let's flash back to three minutes ago" thing every ten minutes.

So I figure Two Towers will be really strong.

I made a trip to Walmart and found the books for cheap, 9 bucks..wahoo!

The two towers is hard to put down, especially when Gandalf makes his return and reading the events and knowing what the hell is going on and who is who.

Ah, I have found my new love next to Star Trek!

Question for Moriarty:

Does Jackson propose to do anything about the allegedly visible car, still waterfalls etc for the dvd?
I saw the film again last Friday night... a friend got a new film print from New Line and screened it, and during the infamous "car" sequence, I watched closely.

It's a chimney and smoke. There's no car.

I'm betting a lot of the "mistakes" are hyperactive imaginations, and I'm not talking about those of Fran and Peter.

I just finihsed Return of the King.

Damned me for not reading these books earlier. To see the least, these movies are now on my top ten, no holds barred.

IIRC, it's when they take five after escaping the Nazgul on Weathertop. They put Frodo down and go looking for Athelas. They don't say 'these are the trolls which Gandalf turned to stone' - they just loom in the background.
Yeah, you could fit Bombadil into a 5- or 6-part mini-series, but not the films. I always found his purpose was to illustrate the history and inevitable end to Middle-Earth, which was covered in other ways.

I recently saw it again too and watched for the car. I didn't see one either, but I don't know where you got your chimney theory. The smoke or dust cloud seemed pretty big, nowhere near a chimney, and it looked like it was moving along a road. But, hell, even if it was a car leaving the smoke trail, you certainly couldn't make it out. It just looked like a bunch of smoke. Could have been a hobbit driven plow or a group of them smoking that crazy hobbit weed.

Guys, chill.

Even if that's a car, it's not a "mistake"... it's a mere technical gaffe. And those happen ALL the time, especially on big, epic movies with complex productions.

A "mistake" would have been a botched editing job, or a shot in which the negative was processed backward... stuff like that. Or, a "mistake" would have been casting Gwyneth Paltrow as the Balrog.

Rest easy. Your untouchable masterpiece is still intact.

Pretty good stuff. Still not sure about moving Shelob to the 3rd film, though.
