About 2 weeks ago I watched Escape from L.A. for the first time. I had heard some bad press for it but didn't think much about it because the sources I saw were from folks who weren't horror/sci-fi/action fans anyway.
HOWEVER...
I have only 3 things to say about Escape from L.A.:
1)Peter Fonda - How the mighty have fallen. Seems a long way from his cruising days with Dennis Hopper. His character, obviously a sycophant, ground my nerves to powder, which I'm sure he would have happily snorted.
2)Basketball - Never a fan of the sport anyway, I like it even less now.
3)Surfing - During this scene I was praying for a stray bullet to strike me directly between the eyes (no disrespect toward the recent D.C. victims, but if they had watched this film just prior to their mishap, they would probably have been thankful).
L.A. lacked the suspense and ability tomake you want to look away like N.Y. did (President affixed to a wall while The Duke shoots until he hits the handcuff chain still makes me squirm; and when the Prez loses it after his rescue and fires a million rounds into The Duke. mmm... Good stuff). Or when the sewer dwellers drag down Season Hubley's character in N.Y.
Fortunately, L.A. only cost me the original purchase price of a blank tape, so I don't feel too cheated. Had I known how much I would dislike L.A. I would have just watched the original.
OK. I'll put away my soapbox now. Just needed to get that off my chest.
Thanks for being there.
