Thread Starter
Renn lays 2010 to rest with the 15 best.

I didn't know you were such a Scott Pilgrim fan!

Really good lists all around, though. It's clear it's been a good year.

That sound you hear in the distance is Sebastian OB exploding with rage. Good list.

You just suggested a Never Let Me Go/Children of Men marathon. Renn, why do you wish to rob people of their reason to live?

Stellar list, though.

Great write up, Renn. Can't wait to see what 2011 will be like with you on full time and 365 days worth of movies to watch. I really need to catch up on these documentaries it seems.

My annoyance at having not seen NEVER LET ME GO yet continues to build.
Yeah... Never Let Me Go kinda slipped by me as well. Looking forward to its home video release. I didn't realize you were that high on Scott Pilgrim as well. Loving all the lists!

...
Ending with the subject that is likely most personal for him --artistic expression-- the filmmaker takes us to some of the darkest places he's explored yet. What's interesting is that Aronofsky's ultimate conclusion seems to be that maybe some impossible quests are able to be completed- but at what cost does that resolution come?
**SPOILERS** below maybe....

It never occurred to me until you said the above but Black Swan could have hints of autobiography in it as Aronofsky heads into a possible studio career. Not so much dying for his work but leaving behind his "perfect" film in what is right now his "last" indie film.

I wasn't as high on Never Let Me Go as some, but its worth it just from a sheer filmmaking standpoint just to witness what an assured, confident directorial hand looks like.

Nice job Renn. The staff lists (along with the video CHUDshow) have me exited to see CHUD rock on into 2011 in a continuing and growing blaze of awesome.

Romanek is in complete command of the craft. If there are problems with the film, I think it's due more to the failure on Alex Garland's part to adapt the book, which (I am told) is quite the heady meditation.

It's worth watching for Andrew Garfield, too, he might not be doing Spiderman in this, but he sure as hell nails Peter Parker from an acting standpoint.

Jackass 3D?

I mean, this was a phenominal year for movies, espcially in the front end of the year. If the quality had kept up all the way through the back end it would probably have been the best year in the last twenty... I just am floored at a list that has Jackass 3D above.. to name a few; The Book of Eli, From Paris With Love, Shutter Island, The Crazies, Repo Men, Knight And Day... and all the movies that were mentioned on every single other list that wasn't Jackass 3D.

I don't know, I guess to each their own but at least this lets me know to skip Renn's reviews.

Yeah, there's a whole paragraph about why. Read it and then you could say words that contain meaning.

EDIT: Okay, I see. You edit a whole block of text in to back the smartass comment. Gotcha.

Those are the films you pull out? lol

Don't count on it, Renn.

I read it, sorry you're a film critic who hasn't seen films...

Those are the films I pulled out..

Repo Men Chud.com rates 7.0 out of 10
Book of Eli Chud.com rates 7.0 out of 10
Knight and Day Chud.com rates 7.0 out of 10

I loved those movies this year along with all the ones I saw on everyone's top 15 (The American, Inception, SPvTW, etc...) along with the honorable mentions (Kick Ass, Daybreakers, etc..). Like I said, I find the inclusion of Jackass 3D to be a little subpar for a top 15 list but to each their own.

Frankly, you can fuck right off with the apologizing for me Snaieke.

You are legitimately splitting hairs about my #15 pick when it's filled by a movie, whether you dig it or not, that isn't even comparable to any other film released this year. You are challenging it with some of the blandest, dumbest shit released this year.

I always thought shit followed you around on these boards just because people couldn't get over the nonsense in the political forums, but I get it now.

Good to know Chud.com's 7.0 out of 10 means blandest, dumbest shit. I'll keep that in mind going forward.

Renn didn't review any of the movies you linked to. He didn't give them 7.0 out of 10, somebody else did.

High-five to you sir.

So glad someone finally puts 'I'm Still Here' on his list, even it's in a three-way tie (I can see the thematic link to Gift Shop, Catfish not so much, though I get where you're coming from).

If not one of the 'best' as in most accomplished in terms of cinematic skill (although really- what kind of an insane acting tour de force was this for Phoenix, if we're to believe the makers' own disclaimer), for me it was one of the most important and relevant films about the society we live in at the moment, transcending even the outlined topic of entertainment celebrity. One could easily make a parallel film about a politician switching sides- it has that kind of resonance. Unfortunately most of that was lost in the whole 'is this real' discussion, and once the makers themselves came out to settle it (still don't know if that was a good move), that seemed reason enough to ditch the whole point of the movie as irrelevant.
You hit the nail on the head here Renn: the audience reaction towards Phoenix' initial announcement, his forthcoming actions and appearances, and finally the 'fake' disclosure are all a part of the movie as much as the content itself. The only reason this got treated differently then 'Gift Shop' (which is in all the lists and hasn't been debunked as yet) is that it's Joaquin Phoenix, which is exactly the point of the whole endeavour.
