THE ONLY TWO 'BEST OF 2010' LISTS YOU NEED... TARANTINO'S AND CHUD'S - Page 2

Knight and Day is far more enjoyable than it has any right to be. I really liked it. Did I like it more than Inception? Not in the least. If we're comparing both on a scale of "Fun summer action films" Inception still blows it away, in my opinion, but Knight and Day ain't bad. I can completely see how Tarantino would dig on it. It's like a modern day, louder Charade. Yeah, I went there.

Kidding folks, kidding.
I get why people might love MacGruber. That's an inner 12 year old's movie if ever there was one.

My inner 12 year old just thought it was fucking awful, is all.

Man, people are missing the easiest target on his list. ROBIN HOOD? Seriously? Is it an UNSTOPPABLE substitution or something? The was the most irritatingly bad film of the year.

Having just watched KNIGHT AND DAY this weekend, I have to strongly disagree. My expectations were very, very low: I was hoping for something fun, streamlined, and engaging. Not a huge Cruise fan, but this seemed to be in his wheelhouse while simultaneously poking fun at his public image of being off kilter. Diaz I was willing to give a pass if there was chemistry, good banter and an engaging plot (however farfetched).

With the exception of Cruise, the movie failed entirely. Huge plot holes - not the "tyranny of the real" kind, just holes, period. Zero chemistry between Diaz and Cruise. Zero charisma or empathy for Diaz. An ending that gives all new definition to WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED.

The premise held potential, and I think Cruise was great casting. But the movie was awful.

Obviously Tarantino and many others love Toy Story 3, but what keeps the film from being great for me is that the ending is a franchise reboot. The end of the second film is about the acceptance of the passage of time. The third film sort of ruins that theme and/or mixes Christianity with mysticism (reincarnation now). I don't think the ending of the film pays off the start of the film. I also prefer Toy Story 2's more breathless/orgasmic building of set up pay-offs, than here where the characters are saved by a God machine (literally). It's effectively dark, but also in a way that ties with my misgivings about the whole adventure (it's easy to involve an audience when you put a gun to the head of a loved one). That said, I mean, the Pixar guys know what they're doing and so much of everything in the film is top tier re:writing/directing/framing, but I have enough issues with the film to keep it from my list - even if I like it a lot.
I felt the exact same way about TS3. I rewatched both TS3 and HTTYD before making my list, and TS3's ending didn't stick the landing for me, both emotionally and in execution (I thought it went on too long and got weirdly corny for a Pixar film).

And I am horribly offended Tarantino didn't put HOT TUB TIME MACHINE on his list. I'm never seeing one of his films again!

I remember seeing QT on Charlie Rose back in 1997 where he said his two favorite movies of that year were Boogie Nights . . . and My Best Friend's Wedding. The man covers the gamut, to say the least.
