I can't express how fucking pumped I am. This is awesome.

I'm very excited. Gareth Edwards might be a bit unexperienced, but he isn't a hack like Louis Leterrier, who I was frightened might get the job. He's also bringing on a new writer! The original was David Callaham, ugh! Glad he's gone!

1) Wonder if the Japanese will kill him off in a few years as a throwaway gag like they did with GINO.

2) PLEASE let Maria Pitillo reprise her role. She was the standout of the 1998 version!

I'd love to see a flowchart of the North American Godzilla rights. I never understood how WB and Legendary got this.

But anyways, effing awesome news. Inspired choice of director. And now that Callaham isn't scripting it has an actual chance to be good.

From my understanding, Sony's rights to the Godzilla character expired back around 2003, they reverted back to Toho, and Legendary Pictures picked it up early last year.

Very skeptical. Monsters wasn't what I want from a Godzilla film. I don't suspect that is what'll be made, but I'd feel better with a more experienced director.

Even though I didn't love Monsters, this makes a shitload of sense, especially if you rewatch the 1954 original.

I liked Monsters a whole bunch, but not for the monsters, really. Not sure what that means for me with this movie. Are we just gonna get glimpses of the big guy? I don't want Cloverfield: Godzilla.

I'm also a bit afraid of Cloverfield: Godzilla too. At the same time, this is going to be a big event movie so I'm pretty certain they'll want to show off the monster as much as they can.

Reservations and all, this is a great choice.

Great news. I really have high hopes this will be good.

awesome. always have love for the big green monster.

wait, no love for 83 zilla? that was my first exposure to the rubber suit of doom. aaand it had perry mason no less

Why are people assuming that he'll shoot the monster in his new big-budget tentpole flick the same way he shot the monsters in his peanuts shoestring-budget debut? There's no way this'll be CLOVERFIELD: GODZILLA. What it does now stand a chance of being is a monster movie with actual characters and resonance.

Agreed, choices made for budgerty concerns will not carry over to a bigger flick.

Does this mean that Godzilla will finally get laid?

Loved Monsters. Never thought I would be excited to see a Godzilla movie.

That's a solid choice.  I'll refrain from saying great until we see something from the production, because I am a little concerned about a director making such an enormous budget/scale leap.  Hopefully he pulls it off.

First I haven't seen Monsters.

Glad Louis Leterrier didn't get this either, He has no balls.

I applaud this choice for being different and as Phil pointed out the original Godzilla was a much different film than the sequels that followed it.

I hope for a daring approach but expect this will be by the numbers.

At this point formula is the problem with monster films in general I looked at Cloverfield as a breath of fresh air.

This can't be that movie and won't be but I hope the studio understands how big that film was for Paramount.

The approach has to be unique for this to work and we can hope this young filmmaker can pull it off.

Good choice; really enjoyed Monsters, and seriously doubt Edwards is going to attempt a Godzilla-flavoured remake of that movie.

Say what you will about Monsters, but it does show that he can handle the scale and staging required for a good giant monster movie. The question is, are they going to stick to what made Godzilla work or make a bunch of unnecessary changes that fuck the whole thing up a la Emmerich?

I just hope, This, US Godzilla film is...Good!  Also, I hope the director understands...Godzilla Breathes Fire.  When Emmerich's film was released, he actually said a creature in real life would not breathe fire.  It was so ridiculous.  It wasn't like he was supposed to direct a...Nature Documentary about Godzilla.  That might even have been better.  A Fake Documentary about one of the Classic Movie Monsters of all time.
