Welcome to the message board paradise

Except I can't reply to any forum posts.

EDIT: Yeah, as soon as I typed that, I knew it would work.

Wow... I'm very happy I came back to this!

This is quite the difference.  Hopefully it grows on me.

I will say this, there is not enough differentiation in fonts and colors between names and quoted first parts of the message.

Ok, so I can post in this forum but not the Sports forum. At all.  I think Nick is trying to tell me something.

I guess I'll be the first negative Nancy. The message board seems alright, but the main page seems more cluttered and I don't really care for it. I also hate the new review section, I preferred the old layout, where it was all alphabetical. My two cents on this.

Give the redesign some time to grow. Cant expect immediate perfection. I freaking love it though!

Anyone else not receiving email notifications? I reset all the preferences I could find but I'm still not getting anything when a thread updates.

Meanwhile: unlimited user text, babe.

This new layout is gonna take some getting used to.  I really miss the left column of story links that were on the old site.  It made navigating through new stories a breeze, and there's no real replacement on the new site.  There are a few links on the right side of story pages now, but do I really have to go back to the main page to find most of the links to new articles?

I also think it's kind of dumb that I have to scroll down the main page quite a ways before I can find the links to new stories.  You have a thin top header, a large title header, a thin navigation bar, a sizeable banner ad bar, a bar for image links to reviews& stories (also has sign in links), a very large "grill" to highlight stories, and an oversized title bar all before you get to actual news story links?  It seems to be a bit of useless overkill.  A lot of these things could be resized or eliminated to make navigating the site easier and more intuitive.  Doing so would also make the barrier before actual content much smaller.  I think the navigation in the new site has been made worse, not better.

I also think the "Radioactive Creature Grill" is pretty useless without text descriptions.  It's really hard to tell what the pictures are linking to, and the thick borders on the thing de-emphasize the images anyway.  I assume the purpose is to highlight stories, but it doesn't seem to be doing a very good job to me.  It's too bad it takes up so much space.  Personally, I think having two sections to highlight stories is rather redundant ("grill" area & bar above it).

Okay, now that I've possibly made the management angry, maybe I should mention some things that I do like.  The community part of the site looks and works much better than it used to.  I love the new dropdown menu for the forums on the community page that allows you to jump right to whichever forum you want to go to, but I'm also glad you can still go to the main listing as well that's very similar to the old layout. The new text editor in the forums is very nice.  The editing buttons look much cleaner, and spoiler tags are nice (although I did notice you can still read them when highlighting).  I'm not sure how useful the chat room will be, but it's kind of neat to have it.  The community reviews section is a really cool addition.  I can't wait to read/write content there.

I know I came off a bit negative in the beginning of this post, but I really do like the new site overall.  I think mainly I just need to get used to navigating the new layout more than anything.  None of the things I mentioned are gamebreaking...just a bit annoying for the moment.

It makes me happy to see some old-timers lurking around in here.  Like we're a family getting together for a reunion rather than a funeral, if you know what I mean.

I can login to CHAT. Nice.

Seems like the site is down again.

Anyway, I do like the main design choices of the main page and the MB does seem to be full of great toys and opportnities. However, in my humble nitpicky opinion there seem to be some redundancies that are rather irritating and don´t seem very userfriendly for casual visitors on the first glance:

  • I think that the radioactive grill thingy and the picture column on top of the page (which are not even labeled) take up a lot of space while overlapping with the same articles. But I guess that´ll change with more content. On that subject it does look grating that the "Welcome to the chewer" and the picture column are not lined up but rather somewhat unhinged.
  • Some articles are linked up to three or four times on the same page. This does give a rather cluttered impression.
  • Given the great surge in content I do think that the column "the latest" is redundant as well next to "latest news" "latest reviews" et al. Seems like a waste of precious front page estate to me and it does put video games and blu reviews a bit out of sight.
  • Seems to be a bit superfluous as well to have not only the "CHUD/COMMUNITY" buttons on the top (which are great!) but "register" and "sign in" as well pretty much right next to it.

Having that first, or second impression of my chest, keep up the good efforts, gents!

Pretty swanky new digs around here.

Couple notes (and I will change my giant User Text eventually-- I just think it's funny):

Is this the correct thread to talk Forum issues?

  • Avatars are taking significantly longer to load, and they bump the page around while they do, making it easy for one to click the wrong links if one is in a hurry.
  • Post History now includes quoted material in the previews, often obscuring the actual text of the post
  • Email notification still not happening.
  • I can't seem to get Multi-quote to work.
  • Is there a viewing option for Subscribed Threads where I can list them in order of recent activity? That was extremely useful on the old version.

OK enough bitching. Embedded video! Spoiler tags! Hooray!

I like it. The clearer division between categories and the laying out of everything "Latest" under its own header is a definite improvement. The only gripe I have with the main page is the Creature Grill. I like that it looks like a graphic from a Duke Nukem 3D menu but it's slightly unwieldy and seems to clog up the main page somehow.

Aside from the signatures blending in a bit with the posts, I love, love, love the new message board.

I'm not crazy about the top half of the front page of the site, however. I'd prefer the grill be removed and the latest news items be bumped up.

To quote Abraham Lincoln, "New CHUD is the shit." Really digging the new look, and the site loads faster, too. Congrats on the switchover.

Is there a way have the forums show images as links? Some of the image-heavy threads are a hassle on mobile devices. Also, am I the only one worried about seeing spoilers in the last post previews?

This is going to take some getting use to after all these years of lurking and posting but I like it so far.

THIS.

Also, the white-text-on-white-background for quoted material when you're drafting a response is not so good.

The main page seems cluttered and .... noisy.  Prior incarnations were more elegant, easy to navigate, and focused.  This is more like a cacophany.  I find the new forum format to be also noisy, and more focused on design and style choices rather than the words being written.  Maybe I'll get used to it.

Site looks amazing. Congrats to all involved. Lots of cool new features. I'm sure I'll be discovering them for months to come.

I'm pretty much cool with everything except having to scroll down to find the recent news. That shit needs to be "above the fold!" (Yeah, I just used newspaper speak. I'm old school.)

I love, love, love the new site, Nick and co.! I can't imagine how much work went into it.

Yeah, I miss the sidebar. Easy to see what's new at a glance,

The sidebar's on the right, folks. Under LATEST. On EVERY PAGE!

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there are a lot fewer links in the right sidebar "Latest" section than there used to be when they were on the left.  Perhaps that's just the smaller font size talking.

The more I'm using the new site, the more I am liking it.  I still think the main page tries to cram in way too many things, but it's not a dealbreaker or anything.  I really like the image strip for stories on the main Community page.  It seems much more successful at highlighting new stories than either of the two things on the main page. I'll probably look for new articles there.

Yep, and that's good. But you still have to scroll down a bit to see it. No biggie. I'm not that lazy! I can take .04 seconds to scroll!

Did I miss something here? I thought CHUD was changing into guy.com...why is CHUD redesigned then?  Although, it does look nice.

Nah, Guy.com is supposed to be a new site completely independent from CHUD.

Not to mention all those handy menus that pop up in the navigation ;-)

I'm on a P.O.S. laptop I'm borrowing(my laptop met with an... "accident" recently), so this is more of a test post than anything.

Really digging the front page, but like any change, it's going to take some getting used to.

So far, I'm digging the update.  I'm not sure how many people will see it, or even care, but I'm using the List feature in the profile page to keep a 2011 Movie Journal.  I remember the old threads and enjoyed them when they worked, so being able to do it here is kinda cool, even if it's only for myself in the end.  I tried keeping one in 2010 (in a notebook I carry around every day), only to fail miserably.  I didn't even make it to the end of January when I trailed off, picking it up again in December.  So sad...  BUT 2010 was a pretty piss poor year for me actually watching stuff, so it's not a great loss.  Myabe I'll make a list for the sadness that is my failed 2010 list too.  In any event, Netflix and a portable DVD player should help me at least keep a reasonably respectful list going.  It's a new year's resolution for me, and in the 30 some odd days since I've been actively keeping tabs on things I've watched 24 flicks, which has to be a record for me.

Thanks again Nick, and to everybody else who helped with the new design.

I really like the list function as well.  I've been putting together a list of all the video games I have ever owned.  It's not as many as some, for sure, but it took me a while to remember some of the game I had years ago.

Just noticed something great about the NEW CHUD. Not sure if it's an optical illusion or not, but I think our AVATARS have increased in size!

Overall I am really liking the look and layout (especially of the main page), but my computer at home is too old to run the site well and it moves at a crawl. On my iPod it now almost doesn't work. This only serves to make me doubly pumped for the APProlleyes.gif. The NEW CHAT is also great fun, though my computer at home seems to be unable to run it quickly enough

This is a nit pick, that I don't think is technically a bug but rather a design choice for the boards: When composing text, my browser underlines words that are misspelled using a red squigly line. However, when I try to right click those words on the NEW CHUD, the board kicks up a dialog box about cutting and pasting. Not sure what the point of that is since there already exist keyboard shortcuts for those functions

Kate, on my Mac I'm able to bypass that and get the real context menu by holding command while right clicking. There's probably something equivalent on a PC.

I'm a big gamer myself, and that would be a lot of fun for me to do, but I'm not even going to try.  It would be a fruitless effort considering I'd have to go all the way back to the Atari 2600.  My brain wouldn't be able to handle the 27+ years or so.  I might actually keep track of what I've been playing starting this year, but that's as ambitious as I'm gonna get.

I turned of signatures, and I like reading threads much more now.

I have a mac at home with a mono mouse, and  I have to control click in the first place to right click

I love the fancy new header on the email notications.

I'd love a way to browse Reviews alphabetically. For example, even using the search bar and the phrase "North Country review Devin Faraci", I get three pages of results and none of them are Devin's old review of North Country from 2005.

It's being worked on sir.

I just wish it had a little more flexibility.  I went to manually enter The Ladykillers and I had no option to mark it as "Seen It," just "Own It," "Want It," or "Had It."  Plus, you'd think, with two versions of the film out there, it would appear on the list.

Overall, great job, Nick and co.! I really don't think I can comment too much on any dislikes because I'm still in the "I fear change!" phase of trying to turn my muscle memory off when browsing the new site.

I just noticed the quote at the bottom of the main page! Does it change daily, or what?

We're in a tight spot!

The quote does indeed change.

Maybe try holding both control and command at the same time? haha good luck
