The premise:
Raiders of the Lost Ark is an unforgettable classic, and Harrison Ford's portrayal of Dr Jones is unquestionably one of the all time great screen performances. Words like iconic don't even begin to sum up the legacy of Indiana Jones. Not only are they some of my all time favorite films, I genuinely think the three volumes of  the Indiana Jones Trilogy are among the best movies ever made.

Should that be the end of the road, though? Harrison Ford, like Connery as Bond, is untouchable, but does that mean the character should die with him? Or have the adventures of Dr. Jones just begun?

What I propose would be this: take us back to the beginning with a reboot of Raiders. Start us off fresh with a new Jones, a new actor under the fedora and a new attitude. Stay faithful to the character but use the springboard of the Raiders relaunch to take the character in a new direction. Make a new Raiders that embraces the darkness we see in Jones from the original film, and make that the blue print for all the new adventures that follow. Spielberg would sign off as executive producer, and after an exhaustive search, he'd team with Neil Marshall to helm the initial reboot, with names like Michael Mann, Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo Del Torro waiting in the wings to tackle the sequels. I've spent the past two weeks meticulously building my reboot cast up from scratch. Each and every role has been carefully considered, and the cast I've brought together would be a dream team for launching a brand new series of Indiana Jones films.

And now, the reboot.

Neil Marshall's Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (2014)

10d2cc80.jpg

Starring Daniel Craig as Indiana Jones

"Hahaha, sonofabitch..."

With...

Gael Garcia Bernal as Satipo

"The Hovitos are near."

Benito Martinez as Barranca

"If they knew we were here, they would have killed us already."

Michael Fassbender as Rene Belloq

"Once again you see there is nothing you can possess which I cannot take away."

Kurt Russel as Jock

"Come on, show a little backbone!"

Brian Cranston as Agent Musgrave

"You must understand, Dr. Jones, this is all strictly confidential."

Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Agent Eaton

"Frankly, we’re a little suspicious. An American being mentioned so prominently in a secret Nazi cable."

Viggo Mortensen as Marcus Brody

"If I were ten years younger, I'd have gone after it myself. I'm really rather envious."

Anne Hathaway as Marion Ravenwood

"Indiana Jones.. Somehow I always knew you'd come walking back through my door."

Christoph Waltz as Toht

"Your fire is dying. Won't you tell me where the piece is now?"

Mark Strong as Sallah

"Holy smoke, my friends! I'm so pleased you're not dead."

Golshifteh Farahani as Wife of Sallah

"What is this? Where did this animal come from?"

Gassan Massoud as The Arab

"Seig Heil!"

Guy Pearce as Dieter

"I am uncomfortable with the thought of this Jewish ritual."

Idris Elba as Captain Katanga

"Jones is dead. I killed him."

Chiwetel Ejiofor as First Mate of the Bantu Wind

"I can't find Mr. Jones, Captain. I've looked everywhere!"

OK, there you go. I'd love feedback. I also have an idea that would see Gassan Massoud as The Arab play a dramatically beefed up role during the second act. Also keep in mind Mark Strong would gain weight and grow a beard for the part of Sallah.

I've never seen someone do an Indy that suitably replaced Ford.  Not Craig, not Eckhart, and certainly not Jackman (who would make an okay Jack Colton, but that's not the same thing.)  There's a reason Ford was the biggest star in the world.  He had something other guys don't.

I have my criticisms of Temple, but as a standalone thing it has enough good to merit its existence.  As a followup to Raiders (even as a prequel), I can't abide it, though.  Obviously i'm in the minority on that one amongst our fellow geeks.

The original idea was I could see The Rock as Apollo Creed. He has the personality for the role. Segal is a big dude, so I could see him playing a boxer. He also comes across as a normal dude, so I could see him as a down on his luck boxer. Finally its easy, at least for me, to see Pesci as a coach reading people the riot act.

I really like that Rocky recast. It looks at Stallone from what he was then (loveable lug with spaniel eyes) instead of what he became (action icon). Looking at it that way, Segal fits the bill perfectly. And Dwayne Johnston is perfect for Creed - especially with the age difference between him and Segal.

I think in some ways that might be the most exciting casting idea I had. I think Fassbender in the role would really help sell the idea that Belloq is every bit the treasure hunter Jones is, but darker and more french.

You know, Toht was remarkably difficult to cast. You're absolutely right that Waltz isn't necessarily ideal physically for the role, but he could nail the acting, and I think if you painted his face up with sweat, and gave him greasy hair, I'm sure he'd sell it.

Hoffman is just about perfect for that role I think, and he'd actually get to come back at the end to tell Craig that "top men" were working on the ark. Russell excels at the kind of humor required from Jock, and even though it's a small role, with Spielberg's involvement and the prestigious nature of the project he wouldn't hesitate to cameo and knock it out of the park. To be a part of such an iconic moment in reboot Jones history would be a chance he'd jump out of retirement to snatch up.

Casting the new Indy was incredibly tough. The truth is no one can replace Ford. It's a fool's errand. The first name that jumped to mind was Craig, but I hesitated. He's already Bond! After a massive brainstorming session, I finally decided that despite the fact he's already Bond, Craig is really the only one who could make Jones believable on screen. It makes sense too. Indiana Jones is played by Harrison Ford, famous for being Han Solo - something that had Lucas and Spielberg hesitate to cast him in Raiders. Jones' father is of course Sean Connery, himself famous for being James Bond. It's only natual then that the second Indiana Jones be portrayed by a man who is also James Bond. I think that Craig could take the character of Jones as defined by the script, and make it unique and worthwhile. Just like Craig kicks ass as Bond even though he could never "do a Connery", I think he could make a great Indiana Jones. Before Ford was cast and made that role his own, Jones was just a collection of traits and lines of dialog found in a script. That's what I'd want Craig to tackle. Take the character from the script and make it his own.

Haha, I selected Viggo to emphasize his status as a treasure hunter like Jones, just pehaps a few years older and a bit more cautious. I love Crusade, and I'm a member of the Denholm Elliot fanclub for life, but after the Raiders reimagining, the rebooted series would focus on new adventures rather than retelling the stories we already know.

I can't see Craig smiling, or playing anything light. Perfect for this version of Bond, but he's awful in Cowboys and Aliens, which is closer to what they'd be trying to do there. Still think Eckhart comes closest. He's got the grin.

Ignoring that last post...

Craig's just too cold for Jones. A strong actor, but no warmth to him. Eckhart, Jackman . . . they're better, although still off the mark a little bit, for my money. Going in a slightly different direction, how would Damian Lewis work?

Perhaps you've just not seen the right Daniel Craig movies? Look how charming and affable he was in the first half of Dream House, for instance. His character in Tomb Raider also has a bit of that light hearted adventurer feel. Angelina Jolie describes him as the Jolly Joker. In Sylvia, he is a laugh riot during the initial party scenes. And in Munich, Spielberg cast him as the sarcastic guy who didn't take things too seriously!

And on the page at least, Jones isn't all smiles. I like what Craig brings to the role, but I'd not have him attempt to replicate Ford. He'd start fresh from the script.

I don't think TOMB RAIDER is the right anything.

To be fair, I haven't seen Dream House, Tomb Raider, or Sylvia. But even in Munich, he's the sarcastic guy in the context of that film, which is a very grim, meditative political thriller. But Raiders is something very different. It's not a comedy, but even Spielberg has compared it to a ride at Disneyland. Craig...I just think slotting him into that role changes to the tone of the film entirely. I mean, think about that first scene with the whip, but with Craig instead of Ford. I don't know, maybe I'm typecasting him here.

Well it's all just hypothetical, but that is why I chose the quote "Hahaha, sonofabitch..." to accompany my notice of casting for the role of Jones. It's a little character moment Ford owns effortlessly (from when Belloq traps him in the Well of Souls), yet I can see Craig hitting that note perfectly. His pain-into laughter scene in Casino Royale required a similar skill set.

I think of Craig with lines like "I don't know, I'm making this up as I go...", I think of the way he can bring that exhausted yet indomitable look like Ford had in his fights, and I know he could do it. It's all very vivid in my imagination. From academic excitement with Viggo during the lecture on the staff of Ra to the look on Indy's face as the hood ornament starts to break mid truck chase, I'd bet my life Craig could be Indiana Jones for the new Millenium.

Ultimately though without the film being made, no one will have proof one way or the other.

PS If you mean the scene with the whip as in the scene where Indy disarms Barranca and steps into frame with his face visible for the first time, then I definitely think Craig could do that. Indy was cold in that moment. Craig would have no sympathy for a guide who betrayed him.

Well, that's the thing. It's a cold moment for Indy, and Craig would exude coldness. Cold on top of cold. It could be an extremely harsh moment, I think, and out of tune how the rest of the film would, or should, play. Harrison Ford is too naturally charming for us to lose sympathy for Indy in that scene. I think if it was Craig, the audience wouldn't view Indy as any kind of hero, not exactly the response I think Spielberg wanted there.

I think this has turned into an interesting discussion of how casting affects how a film plays.

PT Anderson's Man of Steel (2013)

Cast:

Henry Cavill: Clark Kent/Superman
Daniel Day Lewis : Lex Luthor
Joaquin Phoenix: General Zod
John C. Reilly: Jonathan Kent
Jodie Foster: Martha Kent
Lois Lane: Amy Adams
Phillip Seymour Hoffman: Perry White
Robert DeNiro-Jor-El
Paul Dano- Jimmy Olson

Obviously music by Johnny Greenwood and probably be very, very dark which a lot of people dislike especially with Supes but I think this would be amazing!
