Then a HIGHLANDER recast you shall have, sir!
Directed by NEIL MARSHALL, because who the fuck else, right?
Connor MacLeod: JAMES McAVOY

Brenda Wyatt: ABBIE CORNISH

The Kurgan: RORY McCANN

Heather MacLeod: JESSICA BROWN FINDLAY

Rachel Ellenstein: GEENA DAVIS

and as always, the only choice for Ramirez remains ANTONIO BANDERAS

CASTING NOTES: Why McAvoy? Look, I know part of the appeal of the original HIGHLANDER was how fast and loose it played with accents, nationalities and the like but I'd like this version to be a little more faithful in some respects. And, well, McAvoy's a Scot, so there you go. But I like the fact that he's not necessarily the warrior type at first glance - you should be worried for him when he first enters the fray - and that he reveals himself as a masterful fighter despite his slight frame. (Remember the climactic duel in ROB ROY, and how foppish Tim Roth showed himself to be pretty fucking dangerous with his rapier against Liam Neeson's more powerful but lumbering broadsword attacks? Nothing's cooler than an adversary who's easily underestimated.) Plus McAvoy has an 'old soul' quality that I think would work well for the role, especially when contrasted with his fresh-faced looks.
Cornish is my go-to gal for many roles, mainly because she can convey braininess and strength without being given a set of Tara Reid's eyeglasses and some cheesy "My way till payday" dialogue. She looks like someone who could have written a book about ancient metallurgy! And her natural forthrightness would complement the slight elusiveness and enigmatic quality I think McAvoy would give Connor.
McCann: well, shit, son, haven't you seen GAME OF THRONES? You just don't fuck with the Hound. Plus McCann revealed himself capable of subtle, unnerving menace in the penultimate episode of GoT S2, particularly in his last scene with Sansa. Would he hit the giddy heights of Clancy's Kurgan? Can't really say but I get the feeling Rory would make his Kurgan a fearsome, unstoppable Terminator-style adversary.
Jessica Brown Findlay is straight-up gorgeous and I want to see more of her onscreen. And I cast Geena Davis because she looks like an older version of Connor's first great love, Heather. I get the feeling MacLeod wanted Rachel in his life for so long because of that resemblance (never acting on it, of course). Having the blonde Cornish as his new love indicates a break with the past and a new beginning - visual storytelling, I can do it!
The dash, elan and mischief of Banderas is a natural fit for Ramirez. I want it, and I will not be denied. Nor will I be denied the chance to hear him say "How revolting!" when told what haggis is made of.
This is my HIGHLANDER recast. There are many like it but this one is mine.
