HERE’S THAT NEW CARPENTER MOVIE’S TRAILER

Don't get your hopes up.

I'm not really looking for a big comeback, just a decent ghost story which is what I think this looks like. And yeah, I might not be interested if Carpenter's name didn't appear in that font above the title, but it does and I am. And like you said, he's earned it with his body of work.

Looks pitiful. Is Peter Jason in it?

oh...

Peter Jason's too good for it!

I'm secretly hoping he pulls a Shamalyn and has the killer be "The Thing."

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

So Carpenter puts out a trailer full of cookie cutter horror clichés, the Internet's reaction is "God, that looks awful."

Kevin Smith puts out a trailer full of cookie cutter horror clichés, the Internet's reaction is "Oh, that looks interesting!"

Not saying this trailer worked, but it doesn't look any more trite than Red State, and it caused a kneejerk, nearly reflexive defense. Is it because Carpenter used to be so very, very good at this?

Probably, yeah.

As for me, Carpenter stopped making movies after In The Mouth Of Madness. John Carpenter could be actually spelled A-L-A-N S-M-I-T-H-E-E as far as I'm concerned.

I don't have "high hopes" for this one, but am looking for something decent. Carpenter is probably my all-time favorite director. I appreciate both Vampires and Ghosts of Mars for what they are even - - - which is a whole lot of fun.

In my defense, I hated the Red State trailer too.

Im waiting for the DVD for this one.......I lost faith in Carpenter in 1996

Looked like a really uninteresting DTV horror flick to me. Either it's shot badly or the trailer was done by someone with no sense of style or both.

And regarding Red State: that looked bad/dumb, too, but as in this case, context does inform the reaction. Smith using any kind of visual style is a breakthrough. Carpenter apparently abandoning style is a cinematic cockpunch.

Obviously he hasn't made anything great in a while, but Carpenter has brought me so much damn happiness over the years, at this point I just want to support him. I know full well that NBA is his god. It's not blind devotion, it's a loyalty thing. I just can't walk away.

As for the trailer, I suppose the pretty girls were there to induce a stiffie, but it was the knockoff Suspiria music that really did it for me. I got a really strong Fragile/Mechanical Girl vibe from the trailer. Looks alright.

I'm psyched to watch this next to Sucker Punch!

Doesn't look great, but looks better than anything he's done in years. And that trailer really tells us jack shit about the tone, pace, mood of the thing. Go watch the trailer to the original Halloween and tell me that looks any good. Right now all we know it's a horror movie set in an insane asylum (plus), that hot girls shower in it (plus), and that WB saw fit to distribute it (minor vote of confidence there?)

Trailer didn't do much for me, but I'm interested only for the fact that this was what got Carpenter to put down the friend chicken and X Box controller and get behind the camera again. Probably the paycheck, but I remain optimistic.

Yeah, I thought of this, too (The Halloween trailer) and it's entirely possible that this is just a poorly constructed trailer. But isn't a well-done/successful trailer one that does help convey tone, mood and pace?

Girl, Interrupted . . .  by GHOSTS!

Carpenter has my eternal good will, so I will undoubtedly see this, but this looks ominously like the SyFy Channel equivalent of Gothika

Wasn't targeting you, but the Internet at large.

I'll see the trailer when I get home, but as long as it's a return to film making by John Carpenter, I'll see it. I also liked Ghosts Of Mars, even knowing full well that it's just a mish mash of plots out of his other films, but it's the only Carpenter film I've seen theatrically, so I look at it with rose colored glasses.

I'll see it because it's Carpenter. I'll more than likely wait till DVD but hey, thats still seeing it.

Looks like it's 8-10 years late for the post-SIXTH SENSE/J-Horror party, but could still work okay if he's able to do that style well. Not that it could be great, but pretty good at least; sadly, low expectations are key here. It's just nice to see him putting out a new film.

The last Carpenter film, Ghost of Mars, was disturbingly bad.  But I flat out love Vampires.  It surprises me that this movie isn't fondly looked upon by his fans.  It's just very enjoyable, with some great performances.  Also his movie before this one, Village of the Damned, was very good.  Christoper Reeves was excellent in it.  I admitt, that I haven't seen VOD since it first came out, but I trust Carpenter instincts in creating horror films.  His track record is still insanely good.

I would rate Ghosts of Mars as like a 6/10. It's goofy, sure, but it's a b-picture space western made with heart. Anyway, I've long ago given John Carpenter a life-time pass.

I want to be excited.  I'm enough of a fan that I even have Ghosts of Mars on DVD.  But this looks generic, without even a hint of his visual signature.  Or suspense.

I thought his Masters of Horror episode was pretty dull, like he didn't have it in him anymore.  This doesn't improve things.

If it gets picked up, I'll be there opening night.

Have you tried to watch it lately?  It's a mess.

But I do kind of dig this trailer.  At least they got the font right!

Nowhere near as terrible as it's made out to be. The movie might well end up being bad, but I think what you guys are railing against is the generic way in which the trailer is put together.

It appears to be a run of the mill horror picture. Looks better than VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED, though.

I finally understood why JC decided to get off the couch and do this movie when the mentally ill models started to take a group shower.

I finally understood that seizure!

You know what? It looks okay. Yes, some cliches going on here.

But you can't knock the nice 2:35, can you?

Asylum movies usually interest me, so I'm already at attention.  Add Carpenter to the mix, and you have a film I will definitely be checking out.

Sadly, the trailer doesn't inspire much confidence, though.

I love Carpenter, but this can wait until it's in my Netflix Queue.

Is Carpenters next film gonna be Darkchylde? God, I hope he was joking about that one.
